YEREVAN, JANUARY 14, NOYAN TAPAN. The relatives and friends on January
12 bade a farewell to Manuk Gasparian, the Founding Chairman of the
Democratic Way party, a former RA MP. In particular, first President
Levon Ter-Petrosian, Chairman of the People’s Party of Armenia, Stepan
Demirchian, Chairman of Sil Concern, Khachatur Sukiasian, a former RA
MP Hmayak Hovhannisian, and other public-political figures took part in
the farewell ceremony.

As Hovhannes Hovhannisian, the leader of the Liberal-Progressive Party
of Armenia, said in his interview to Noyan Tapan correspondent, M.
Gasparian during his whole life was striving for restoration of freedom
and justice, which is not proper to everyone. "He was just burnt in
this struggle, was burnt with a big flame. Now the people, who are in
the same struggle with him, should fulfil his behests and complete the
work he started. M. Gasparian even did not go to hospital, as he
considered himself bound in connection with the election campaign," H.
Hovhannisian added.

Arayik Kotanjian, the prefect of the Kanaker-Zeytun community, in hus
turn, mentioned that he will remember Manuk Gasparian as a person, who
loved his homeland, his land. "I have had many conversations with
Manuk, I can say that he was a person, who was anxious about the state:
the highest trait I appreciate in him," A. Kotanjian said. According to
the prefect, though he had political disagreements with Gasparian,
nevertheless, he will remember him first of all as a politician having
precise principles, not changing his positions.

According to Norik Petrosian, a former RA MP, M. Gasparian has always
manifested himself in the parliament as a "clever, brave, unbiassed
person keeping people’s interests in his brain, in his red blood
corpuscles." Such people, as N. Petrosian mentioned, come across a wall
during the political struggle, which they are not able to break, and
their goals are not fulfilled, but not "because of them, but because
they come across ignorance, self-interest, thrift."

M. Gasparian’s funeral took place at Zeytun cemetery.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
