ARMENIA SETS FORWARD THE FACTOR OF SUMGAIT

The 20th anniversary of the Armenian massacres in Sumgait, an
Azerbaijani city, will be marked in 2008, on which the foreign policies
of Armenia will focus, stated the Armenian foreign minister Vardan
Oskanyan on January 9, noting that Sumgait is highly important because
the military component of the settlement of the Karabakh conflict
originated there where the first attempt of ethnic cleansings took
place there, and led the people of Karabakh to the irreversibility
of the idea of self-determination.
Vardan Oskanyan noted that on the 20th anniversary Armenia will bring
up the issue of Sumgait more actively to explain to the international
community why Karabakh cannot return to Azerbaijan.
