OPPOSITION COLLAPSED IN 2005, CHANGE OF GOVERNMENT WAS ARRANGED IN 2007

Lragir, Armenia

On November 13 at the Pastark Club Shavarsh Kocharyan, the leader
of the National Democratic Party, again spoke on behalf of the
constructive opposition, and said he thinks it is wrong when the former
and the present government fight for the future of Armenia, and there
is no real alternative. According to Kocharyan, the former government
cannot change the system which was established in those years.

Once again the leader of the NDP assured that his party will not
nominate a president, he also said they will support a candidate who
will uphold a democracy based on national values. Shavarsh Kocharyan
did not mention the candidate they will support. He said there is
some time before the election.

The leader of the National Democratic Party stated that the
presidential election will not solve the problem of the change
of government because, according to the new Constitution, the
parliamentary election of 2007 solved this problem. Besides,
Shavarsh Kocharyan says the opposition in Armenia collapsed before
the constitutional referendum in 2005 when it came together around
the idea of reforms in the country and acted against the idea which
was though slow but a move towards reforms. Shavarsh Kocharyan means
the bill on amendments to the Constitution proposed by the government
the NDP was rather loyal to. However, Kocharyan says a document such
as the Constitution works slowly, and its effect on the government
is not noticed at once.
