Armenian leader considers ex-president insignificant rival

[Armenian President Robert Kocharyan] Of course, he [Armenia’s former
President Levon Ter-Petrosyan ] has the right to nominate his
candidacy and we have no problem with that. He has not yet nominated
his candidacy, and the first president has not yet clearly expressed
his decision. For this reason, I do not want to make any comments.

After he and others nominate their candidacies, we will think about
our strategies. We have never avoided struggle, we will not avoid it
this time, and of course, we will struggle for a good result.

By the way, the first president, at least according to the current
studies, will not be the single candidate from the opposition, at
least according to the present situation, and there are two-three
opposition figures whose rating is higher than his [Levon
Ter-Petrosyan’s].

This is also obvious, and I relate the election strategy that we will
adopt. I do not think that attention will be focused on the so-called
insignificant candidate in the election processes.

The Armenian Pan-National Movement participated in all parliamentary
elections, twice – as the Armenian Pan-National Movement, and for the
third time – as the Impeachment bloc, but all top members of the
Armenian Pan-National Movement were involved in the election race.

And I remember that in 1999 they gained about one per cent, slightly
more – 1.1, and in 2003 – 0.6, and in 2007 – 1.3 per cent.

This is the Armenian Pan-National Movement’s capacity and rating. And
I consider it naive to suppose that the people forgot about the
period when the Armenian Pan-National Movement was in power.

We will remember it to those who forgot this. The fact is that it’s
obvious that the Armenian Pan-National Movement is accountable for
the decline in the Armenian economy. Maybe now they see that the
economy is recovering, they think that there are new opportunities
for theft and probably their appetites has grown in this regard.

I am sure that our people would not like to return to 1995-1996 with
all its consequences. They will not want to – I consider many people
don’t have good memories of those years. Try to remember what
sustainable thing was created during those years – for instance in
Yerevan, in the earthquake zone so that anyone can say that this was
done with my participation and remained a sustainable thing at
present.

And within the last 10 years almost at every community and city there
have been sustainable results.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
