LAST MINUTE PLEA TO CONGRESS FROM TURKEY’S JEWISH COMMUNITY: DO NOT LEGISLATE DISPUTED HISTORY

According to reports in many Turkish dailies, the Turkish Jewish
Community placed ads today in Washington’s two major newspapers, The
Washington Post and Washington Times, calling on the Congress members
to reject the controversial Armenian "Genocide" Resolution (HR106).

The ad calls on Congress not to legislate on historical events on
which respected historians are divided and asks the matter to be
settled by historians, based on honest and careful examination of
facts. Turkey’s Jewish community warns about the long term negative
impact such political decision would have on the relations of the
U.S. with Turkey, an indispensable ally and world’s most democratic
country with Muslim majority.

The House Committee on Foreign Relations is set to vote on the
controversial resolution today.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
