NATURE PROTECTION MINISTER SAYS SITES CONSTRUCTED WITHOUT ECOLOGICAL
TESTS IN YEREVAN

Environmental organizations are angry and discontent at massive
constructions in Yerevan, particularly, with an attempt to change the
base of River Getar flowing in downtown Yerevan. Minister of Nature
Protection Aram Harutunyan told a news conference today the layouts of
construction sites and the River Getar have not passed ecological
tests. Asked if these sites will be eliminated after ecological tests,
the minister answered: `We will do the tests and inform you about the
results.’ The minister hoped that trees will also be planted in line
with the construction saying such measures are envisaged by the
general layout of Yerevan.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
