ONLY LEVON TER-PETROSIAN HAS POSSIBILITY OF WINNING AS OPPOSITION’S COMMON CANDIDATE, HNCHAKIAN PARTY’S CHAIRMAN IS CONVINCED

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 26, NOYAN TAPAN. If first Armenian President Levon
Ter-Petrosian runs for the forthcoming presidential elections, the
Social-Democrat Hnchakian Party will support his candidature.
Lyudmila Sargsian, the party’s Chairwoman, stated at the September
26 press conference.
She considers that only the first Armenian President has the
possibility of winning as opposition’s common candidate, therefore
the opposition field is obliged to consolidate on the threshold
of the elections. "I do not exclude that all opposition figures,
who have declared about their intention to nominate their own
candidature, will finally consolidate around him," L. Sargsian
mentioned. According to her, 6-7 political parties, including the
People’s Party of Armenia and the Hanrapetutiun (Republic) party will
support the first President. And ANM, in her words, will not play a
pivotal role among these political forces.
L. Sargsian gave assurance that for L. Ter-Petrosian the first and
foremost task is not to win the presidential elections, but what to
do after this victory. At the same time, she confessed that she is
not familiarized with the first President’s programs.
Though during the first years of independence and in conditions of the
forced war the mistakes of the Armenian authorities were inevitable,
nevertheless, according to the speaker, all actions of the former
authorities cannot be justified by that. "If L. Ter-Petrosian considers
that he should apologize for his mistakes, I will only welcome that,
as repentance is a sign of bravery and strength," L. Sargsian said.
At the same time, she said that L. Ter-Petrosian is not responsible for
the actions of members of his former team. "I am unequivocally against
Vano Siradeghian’s return, as in difference to L. Ter-Petrosian, he has
committed crimes, which cannot not be forgiven," L. Sargsian stated.
