Concerned by the state of human rights and democracy as well as by
threats to the lives and freedom of expression of journalists, the
Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe called for a specific
mechanism mandated to:

– monitor the situation of freedom of expression and of freedom of
the media in Council of Europe member states

– suggest measures to remedy shortcomings identified

We welcome civil society and media professional organisations to share
their views in the context of the ongoing discussion on a possible
future mechanism for promoting respect of Article 10 of the European
Convention on Human Rights. Interested organisations can consult a
discussion paper on the subject and the report on the last meeting
of the Steering Committee on the Media and New Communication Services
(CDMC).

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
