TEHRAN, Sept. 5 (MNA) — Tehran’s Museum of Contemporary Art (TMCA)
is to commemorate the late Marcos Grigorian, pioneer of Iranian modern
art, during a ceremony on September 9 at the TMCA venue.

Veteran Iranian painter Aidin Aghdashlu, art critic Javad Mojabi
and museum curator Habibollah Sadeqi will be making speeches during
the event.

The renowned modern artist, Gholam-Hossein Nami, has sent a message
to be read out during the ceremony.

Nami, together with Grigorian and Morteza Momayyez, was amongst the
founder members of a group of free painters and sculptors in Tehran.

Artworks by Armenian artists will be displayed on the sidelines of
the event.

Nami announced that an exhibition of Grigorian’s artworks will be
held at Tehran’s Museum of Contemporary Art during the autumn. The
artworks are presently on display in the U.S., but will be transported
to Iran to be showcased in the exhibit.

Marcos Grigorian (1930-2007) was a veteran painter and sculptor.

He is particularly renowned for the sculptures which he crafted from
a combination of clay and straw. He died aged 82, from a heart attack
at his home on August 27 in Armenia.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
