Vice-chair of "Orinats Yerkir" party Mher Shahgeldyan was the guest of
"Urbat" club yesterday. Judging from the thick group of the journalists
that came to the meeting, the interest towards internal political
developments has significantly grown, after "Metelitsa – 2" gathering.

M. Shahgeldyan said, " Orinats Yerkir" party is a combative political
power that goes forward together with its supporters and members. We
are in a bellicose mood and ready to struggle. Today we are more
active than ever. We have already introduced around 40 legislative
initiatives to the National Assembly.

The party has definitely purified, and we have implemented this
purification process ourselves. We are going forward. Today "Orinats
Yerkir" party is the most powerful political powers in the political
domain, efficient, with personal attitude and great role."

"Orinats Yerkir" party attaches importance to the discussions
between the political powers, but M. Shahgeldyan says time will
display the solution to many issues. " Time will show what kind of
discussions and approaches there will be. It is too early to speak
about approaches. Orinats Yerkir will announce about its attitude
during the congress."

At the moment when the issue of the united candidate is at consultation
stage the party observes its leader’s candidacy to presidency. " For
me Arthur Baghdasaryan is a candidate to presidency. The political
powers, the experts, and the foreign press observe Arthur Baghdasaryan
as the brightest personality in the opposition camp that enjoys the
sympathy of the people and from this point of view they consider him
one of the most probable candidates of the pro-opposition powers.

Negotiations are being hold with different political powers.

Commenting on his private conversation with the leaders of the People’s
Party of Armenia, M. Shahgeldyan reminded us that they have cooperated
with this party still in the previous parliament. "I hope you treat
these contacts positively". He abstained from going into details of
this meeting transferring it to the tribune of the congress to take
place in October.

The party attaches importance to the idea of a "united candidate"
because the society needs that. Besides that the united candidate will
liven up the pro-opposition mass of the society. But "Orinats Yerkir"
party doesn’t exclude that instead of one united candidate opposition
will appear with different candidates and poles. Most probably in
case of two-stage elections those poles will unite, at the second
stage. This is a possible tactical configuration."

In response to the question about the possible split of the opposition
in case of the two-stage scenario of the elections M. Shahgeldyan
said," The political process is a course, when any political power,
in this or that process can express attitudes.

Speaking about the united candidate and supporting this idea, having
a powerful leader, without any needless affectations, we attach
importance to a unit.

Meanwhile the nomination of the one united candidate during the second
stage will lead to great social support. But today we can’t make
any predictions about the behavior of this or that political power,
because consultations on this issue are still on."

Trying not to go beyond the limits of correctness M. Shahgeldyan
abstained from speaking about any possible nominations. He said,
" In essence there are no nominations at the moment. Some political
figures say they will be nominated, some say they will not."

M. Shahgeldyan said they don’t discuss separate individuals during
the "Metelitsa"- gatherings, they speak about principles, attitudes
and ideas. " We don’t discuss underground issues there. Political
figures gather to introduce their attitudes, approaches, and discuss
the possibilities of synthesizing them."

In response to the questions about the possible cooperation with
the pro-governmental powers the speaker mentioned that they are a
pro-opposition political power and they have a leader and that in
"global" sense it is impossible.

At the end he advised to wait a bit," Today, in my view, it is too
early to do profound analyses."

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
