Scholar specialized in Artsakh Shahen Lazarian (also director of the
gallery of A.Sargsyan and H. Kojoyan) visited the editorial office of
"Hayots Ashkharh" daily to express his indignation about the situation
in cartography and in general the failings in advocacy front.

Recently our interlocutor came across a map published three months
back. And it was the numerous mistakes and deteriorations of the
facts in this map that made him sound the alarm.

"All the maps published after the independence, are as if edited and
corrected by the Turks and Azeries. When you study them you can see
that they are not different from Azerbaijani cartography.

Recently the map of "the Republic of Armenia and the Republic of
Nagorno Karabakh" has been published, on the bottom of which they
have represented the schematic plan of the liberation of Shushy.

First of all I should underscore that it is not mentioned in the
map – who is the author, which publishing house has published it,
and in what printing-house has it been printed.

I simply looked through the map and what I immediately noticed is
that ¼ of Armenian living areas in NKR simply doesn’t exist in the
map. I was so angry that I couldn’t even continue studying the map. I
managed to study only two regions in the map. While, from 43, 17
villages of Hadrut region were not mentioned in the map, 8 villages
from Martuny region were also missing. This is in case of only two
regions. If I go on studying the map I will definitely say that 50%
of Armenian villages are missing.

I can even enumerate those villages missing in the map. Banadsor,
Taghaser, Karink, Petrosashen, Arevshat, Hayrenater, Melikashen,
Tsaghkavank, Jrakuz, Mayramadsor, Taghot, Hkaku, Dudukchi, etc –
in Hadrut region. Kolkhozashen, Tsovategh, Zardanashen, Varanda,
Karahunj, etc – from Martuny region.

Instead on the bottom of the map, in the schematic plan of the
liberation of Shushy, they have represented 33 Azerbaijani names of
the villages and haven’t even mentioned about their Armenian names.

If you find and ask the author of the map why he hasn’t included
Armenian villages in the map, he will most probably justify himself
by saying that the size of the map didn’t allow him to do so.

Amazing! Then how did he manage to place 33 Azerbaijani names in the
map and no place for Armenian villages?

It is really surprising how can we publish similar (pro-Azerbaijani)
maps, thus giving chance to Azeries to use the deteriorated facts.

In general when you look at the maps published this and during the
previous years, you have the feeling that it has been financed by
Baku. They can easily show our map to the world and say, "Please,
Armenians themselves mention that they don’t have any Armenian living
areas in Karabakh." This means our people take maps published in the
1960-ies and copy.

Couldn’t RA and NKR law enforcements agencies touch upon the issue
of Armenian place-names?

In 1993, in one day Azeries passed a law and gave Azerbaijani names
to Armenian living areas. Who is responsible for the re-establishment
of the historical names of Armenian villages? It must be enshrined
by the law. Whereas, for decades the village Karasny (the village of
karasun (40) saints’ massacre) has been mentioned as Daghdagha. And,
what is most interesting, Armenian maps also mention this name. You
will not find any Karabakh inhabitant, who will say Daghdagha,
instead of Karasny."

"Can we say that the authors of advocacy materials are not specialists
and have no idea about the reality?"

"The Academicians have never been in Karabakh and have no idea about
it. They are absolutely not interested in Artsakh. Nowadays doctors,
vets, and engineers, even those who don’t have high education, write
books about the history of Artsakh. I used to write articles against
Azerbaijani authors, but during the recent years I have written 22
criticizing articles against Armenian authors.

Azerbaijani authorities allocate a big amount of money for
anti-Armenian propaganda. I can give a concrete example, for example
Azeries have invented a false album about Khojalu, were Armenians are
described as vampires. This album has been republished for 30 times,
in 17 languages and spread throughout the world. And in our reality
you will never find anything refuting the facts in the album.

Where are our academicians? Should they only become lively when they
receive titles and medals?

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
