YEREVAN, JULY 13, ARMENPRESS: Scientists from the Chemistry and Earth
Sciences Department of the National Academy of Sciences said today
they are going to ask officially prime minister Serzh Sarkisian to
set up a team of experts in non-metal minerals ‘to investigate and
classify 10 major kinds of non-metal minerals in Armenia, which have
a big demand and can be especially competitive in the market."

The scientist will also suggest that a non-metal department be
established within the trade and economic development ministry to
deal with developing a comprehensive legislation for exploitation of
non-metal mines.

Experts say a stone smelter in Karakert may be used as a foothold to
implement this project. They say a business plan was developed for
it which would require a 3 million euro investment.

According to Suren Gevorkian, chief manager of the plant, in Russia
alone the demand for heat-insulating fibers and materials, made of
non-metals is 50 million cubic meters a year.

He said the plant could produce 1 million cubic meters of such
materials in case of investments.

According to him, the sale of 1 million cubic meters of heat-insulating
materials may bring annually up to $400 million.
