Atmosphere of Fear in Armenia Since 2004 – Ruzan Khachatrian

ATMOSPHERE OF FEAR HAS FORMED IN ARMENIA SINCE 2004, RUZAN KHACHATRIAN
SAYS

YEREVAN, MAY 7, NOYAN TAPAN. One of the most absurd phenomena during
the election campaign is that some parties buying voters, meanwhile
make appeals for avoiding this phenomenon. Ruzan Khachatrian,
Spokesperson of People’s Party of Armenia, stated on May 7 during her
dispute with member of National Assembly ARFD faction Alvard
Petrosian.

In R. Khachatrian’s words, another absurd thing is that "the newly
fledged head of the Republican Party addressed to the people by saying
"my dear people," while people are taken to meetings with him by
force. In her words, an atmosphere of fear has formed in the country,
"which has originated from the military operation implemented against
the people in 2004 April." And now, in the words of PPA
representative, they intimidate people with the threat of depriving
them of benefits or dismissing them from job.

In A. Petrosian’s words, the current election campaign has more
civilized character than the previous one when "wilder things took
place." In 1995-1996, in her words, political pressures were stronger:
neary 20 newspapers of Dashnaktsutiun were closed. "It is clear that
no elections of French level will be held in our country, but it would
be wrong to state that the reason of failure of some party is the
atmosphere of fear," A. Petrosian said.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
