YEREVAN, APRIL 17, NOYAN TAPAN. Vaccination against diphtheria will
be carried out in the next few months in the following age groups of
the Armenian population: 26-year-olds, 36-year-olds, 46-year-olds
and 56-year-olds. Head of the RA National Immunoprevention Program
Gayane Sahakian told NT corresondent that the RA Ministry of Health
has already obtained the necessary vaccine.

According to her, a number of controllable infectious diseases are
not currently registered in Armenia, including diphtheria, the last
case of which was registered in 2002. However, G. Sahakian added,
we should take into account the fact that cases of diphtheria still
occur in several neighboring countries, as well as countries having
diplomatic and economic relations with Armenia, including Russia
and Iran. G. Sahakian said that previously diphtheria was considered
a children’s infection, whereas in recent years adults, especially
those aged 30-50, have been diagnosed as having diphtheria.

YEREVAN, APRIL 17, NOYAN TAPAN. Armenia joined the initiative
"Immunization Week in Europe" held by the World Health Organization
on April 16-22. During this period, immunization-related issues
will receive coverage of the Armenian mass media. The RA Minister
of Health Norayr Davidian said at the April 16 press conference
that the purpose of the initiative is to raise the population’s
awareness of the significance of vaccination. According to him,
immunoprevention is one of the highly efficient strategies of health
care, thanks to which no cases of such diseases as diphtheria, neonatal
tatanus and poliomyelitis are now registered in Armenia. Besides,
another achievement of immunoprevention is that in recent years no
cases of children’s deaths due to controllable infections have been
registered. In 2002, Armenia was declared a poliomyelitis-free zone
by the WHO.

Head of the National Immunoprevention Program Gayane Sahakian
noted that vaccination against diphtheria, whooping cough, tetanus,
poliomyelitis, measles, German measles, parotitis and tuberculosis
is done free of charge in Armenia. In her words, only high-quality
vaccines approved by WHO are used in the country.

By the way, Honored Artist of the Republic of Armenia Shushan Petrosian
was elected as ambassador of Immunization Week.

YEREVAN, APRIL 17, NOYAN TAPAN – ARMENIANS TODAY. The Armenian
demonstration of London-residing film maker Carla Karapetian’s
chronical-documentary film "The Criers" about the Armenian Genocide
will take place at Yerevan’s Moscow Cinema on April 17-24. The film
tells not only about the Armenian Genocide but also other genocides
committed after it – in Rwanda, Bosnia, Czechia, etc.

Carla Karapetian, who has came to Armenia to participate in the
Armenian demonstration of the film, met with repsorters on April
16. The young film maker was born to a family of genocide survivors
in Los Angeles. She currently lives in London where she works as a
BBC announcer.

"I am in Armenia for the first time. This is an important visit for
me because my first film will be shown here," Carla said. According
to her, previously it never occured to her to make a film: "The idea
came suddenly when I went to a concert of the famous and progressive
metal band System of a Down." In its songs, this US band calls on the
recognize the 1915 Armenian Genocide, which is still being denied by
Turkey and the US.

The film shows this famous heavy metal band composed of 4 members
of Armenian descent who tour around the world, campaigning for the
genocide recognition. They try to find out why genocides are committed
today as well.

In the opinion of Carla Karapetian, perhaps the most efficient method
for recognition and prevention of genocides is to speak about this
subject by means of culture.

The film was shown for two weeks by BBC, its demonstarion was organized
at the US congress on the initiative of Congress member Adam Schiff
who is well-known for his pro-Armenian position. On April 24 "The
Criers" will be demonstrated in the British parliament, in May – in
France. The film won the award of viewers’ sympathy during a festival
held by the US cinema institute.

AKHALKALAK, APRIL 17, NOYAN TAPAN – ARMENIANS TODAY. The appeal made
by participants of the April 13 meeting organized by the Council of
Armenian NGOs of Samtskhe-Javakhk was misinterpreted in reports of
Georgian mass media.

During his interview to the Georgian television "Mze", deputy of the
Georgian parliament Van Bayburd said that the meeting participants
allegedly demanded that the country’s authorities recognize Armenian
as the second state language in Georgia. Whereas, as was reported,
the participants appealed to Georgia’s authorities with a proposal
to grant Armenian status of regional language in Samtskhe-Javakhk.

According to A-Info news agency, the Council of Armenian NGOs of
Samthkhe-Javakhk called on not to pay attention to "Van Bayburd and
those like him who are ready, for their personal benefit, not only
to mock lawful demands of their own people but may also endanger the
country’s stability."
