COLORADO CONGRESSIONAL DELEGATION UNANIMOUSLY SUPPORTS THE ARMENIAN
GENOCIDE RESOLUTION

Beverly Hills, CA – The Armenian Assembly announced today that the
entire Colorado congressional delegation unanimously supports the House
and Senate Armenian Genocide Resolutions.

Congressman Mark Udall (D) was the first member of the Colorado
congressional delegation to cosponsor this bipartisan resolution,
followed by Representatives Marilyn Musgrave (R), Diana DeGette (D),
Doug Lamborn (R), Ed Perlmutter (D) and John Salazar (D). Also, Thomas
Tancredo (R), pledged to the Assembly that he will sign on as a
cosponsor of H. Res. 106. In addition, Senators Wayne Allard (R) and Ken
Salazar (D) are supporters of the Armenian Genocide Resolution, S. Res.
106.

The Assembly’s Colorado ARAMAC (Armenian American Action Committee)
State Chair Pamela Barsam Brown has been working closely with the
offices of the state’s lawmakers.

“Colorado’s Senators and Representatives have been wonderful in their
tremendous support of reaffirmation of the U.S. record of the Armenian
Genocide,” said Barsam Brown. “We hope other states will follow
Colorado’s example.”

In addition to congressional support, the Armenian Genocide has also
been acknowledged at the state and municipal governmental levels.
Governor Bill Ritter of Colorado and Mayor John Hickenlooper of Denver
have both issued proclamations on the Armenian Genocide.

The Colorado State legislature has also issued a joint resolution
sponsored by State Senators Stephanie Takis and Lois Tochtrop and State
Representative Michael Garcia, stating that “Remembrance of April 24,
2007 and every April 24th hereafter as Colorado Day of Remembrance of
the Armenian Genocide.”

“We greatly appreciate the active support of the entire Colorado
delegation in affirming the incontestable fact of the Armenian
Genocide,” said Assembly Executive Director Bryan Ardouny. “We applaud
the activism and dedication of Pamela Barsam Brown and the Colorado
Armenian community for this achievement.”

The Armenian Assembly of America is the largest Washington-based
nationwide organization promoting public understanding and awareness of
Armenian issues. It is a 501 (c) (3) tax-exempt membership organization.
The Armenian Assembly is also a member of the Colorado Coalition for
Genocide Awareness and Action.

Turkish bible firm attack kills 3

CNN April 18, 2007

DIYARBAKIR, Turkey (Reuters) — Attackers on Wednesday slit the
throats of three people in a Turkish publishing house which printed
bibles, security officials said, the latest attack on minorities in
mainly Muslim Turkey.

NTV said a fourth person had died in hospital, but the report
could not be confirmed.

Security officials said six people had been detained in connection
with the attack in the southeastern city of Malatya. Television pictures
showed police wrestling one man to the ground and leading several young
men out of the building, apparently in handcuffs.

An official from the publishing house told local television that
they had received threats over its publications.

The attack follows the murder earlier this year of
Armenian-Turkish editor Hrant Dink by an ultranationalist, which
prompted extra security measures to be taken for writers and
journalists. Dink was also from Malatya.

Last year a priest was shot dead in the Black Sea province of
Trabzon, which coincided with worldwide protests over cartoons of the
Prophet Mohammad.

The government and other officials in Turkey have in the past
criticized Christian missionary work here while the European Union,
which Turkey hopes to join, has called for more freedom for the tiny
Christian minority.

For some Turkish nationalists Christian missionaries are seen as
enemies of Turkey working to undermine its political and religious
institutions.

Senator Boxer on the Armenian Genocide

PRESS RELEASE
Senator Barbara Boxer
Washington D.C.
112 Hart Senate Office Building
Washington, D.C. 20510
(202) 224-3553

IN COMMEMORATION OF THE 92nd ANNIVERSARY
OF THE ARMENIAN GENOCIDE

Mrs. BOXER. Mr. President, I take this opportunity today to
solemnly commemorate the 92nd Anniversary of the Armenian
Genocide.

The Armenian Genocide was the first genocide of the 20th
century. From 1915 until 1923, 1.5 million Armenians were
brutally killed by the Ottoman Turks in a systematic effort to
eradicate the Armenian people. There were unbearable acts of
torture; men were separated from their families and murdered;
women and children were put on a forced march across the Syrian
desert without food or water.

Henry Morgenthau, the U.S. Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire
from 1913 to 1916, recalled:

When the Turkish authorities gave the orders for these
deportations, they were merely giving the death warrant to a
whole race; they understood this well, and, in their
conversations with me, they made no particular attempt to
conceal the fact…I am confident that the whole history of the
human race contains no such horrible episode as this. The great
massacres and persecutions of the past seem almost
insignificant when compared to the sufferings of the Armenian
race in 1915.

However, we were to witness other such horrible genocides
later, including the Holocaust and the genocide in Darfur,
which is happening today.

As with later genocides, some have tried to deny that the
Armenian Genocide happened. Shamefully, the government of
Turkey still refuses to admit that genocide occurred.

In order for democracy and human rights to flourish, we must
not support efforts to rewrite and deny history. In the United
States, we strive to make human rights a fundamental component
of our democracy. It is long overdue for our nation to demand
that the truth be told. We must recognize the Armenian Genocide
in the name of democracy, fairness and human rights.

At the beginning of the 21st century, as genocide is waged in
Darfur, it is even more critical to recognize the first
Genocide of the 20th century. We must send a message that
genocide and genocide denial will never be tolerated.

To that end, I am proud to be an original co-sponsor of Senator
Richard Durbin’s Senate Resolution 106, calling on the
President to accurately characterize the Armenian Genocide in
his annual message around April 24th and to ensure that the
foreign policy of the United States reflects appropriate
understanding and sensitivity concerning issues related to
human rights, ethnic cleansing, and genocide documented in the
United States record relating to the Armenian Genocide.

It is important that we recognize the Armenian Genocide while
its survivors are still with us to tell their stories. We must
recognize the genocide for the survivors. We must recognize the
genocide because it’s the right thing to do. We must recognize
the Armenian Genocide to help shed light on the darkness and
move toward a more humane world.

SENATOR HILLARY CLINTON AND SENATE MAJORITY LEADER
HARRY REID COSPONSOR ARMENIAN GENOCIDE RESOLUTION

— Thirty Senators have Announced
Support for Anti-Genocide Legislation

— Watch Senator Obama Discuss the Resolution on YouTube

WASHINGTON, DC – In a move welcomed today by the Armenian National
Committee of America (ANCA), two of the nation’s most prominent
Senators – Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) and leading 2008
Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton (D-NY) – agreed to cosponsor
S.Res.106, the Armenian Genocide Resolution.

"We’re very gratified that two prominent national leaders – Hillary
Clinton and Harry Reid – agreed today to join with a growing number
of their Senate colleagues in supporting the passage of the
Armenian Genocide Resolution," said ANCA Executive Director Aram
Hamparian. "As the growth in cosponsors demonstrates, this anti-
genocide measure clearly enjoys the support of a broad, bipartisan
majority in both houses of Congress."

The Senate resolution recognizing the Armenian Genocide was
introduced last month by Assistant Majority Leader Dick Durbin (D-
IL) and Senator John Ensign (R-NV). The measure is a companion to
U.S. House resolution, H.Res.106, introduced by Representatives
Adam Schiff (D-CA), George Radanovich (R-CA), Congressional
Armenian Caucus Co-Chairs Frank Pallone (D-NJ) and Joe Knollenberg
(R-MI), and Foreign Affairs Committee members Brad Sherman (D-CA)
and Thaddeus McCotter (R-MI). With the addition this week of Tim
Bishop (D-NY), Bruce Braley (D-IA), Yvette Clarke (D-NY), Mazie
Hirono (D-HI), Duncan Hunter (R-CA), David Reichart (R-WA), John
Salazar (D-CO), and Tom Tancredo (R-CO), the House measure
currently has over 190 cosponsors.

Joining Senators Durbin and Ensign as cosponsors of the Armenian
Genocide resolution are Wayne Allard (R-CO), Barbara Boxer (D-CA),
Sherrod Brown (D-OH), Sam Brownback (R-KS), Hillary Clinton (D-NY),
Norm Coleman (R-MN), Susan Collins (R-ME), Christopher Dodd (D-CT),
Elizabeth Dole (R-NC), Russell Feingold (D-WI), Dianne Feinstein
(D-CA), Tim Johnson (D-SD), Edward Kennedy (D-MA), John Kerry (D-
MA), Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ), Carl Levin (D-
MI), Joseph Lieberman (I-CT), Barbara Mikulski (D-MD), Robert
Menendez (D-NJ), Jack Reed (D-RI), Harry Reid (D-NV), Ken Salazar
(D-CO), Charles Schumer (D-NY), Olympia Snowe (R-ME), Debbie
Stabenow (D-MI), John Sununu (R-NH), and Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI).

In a powerful speech today on the Senate floor, Senator Bararba
Boxer, a long-standing and energetic champion of Armenian Genocide
recognition, stressed that she is "proud to be an original co-
sponsor of Senator Richard Durbin’s Senate Resolution 106. The
California legislator, speaking to her Senate colleagues, argued
forcefully that, "We must recognize the genocide because it’s the
right thing to do. We must recognize the Armenian Genocide to help
shed light on the darkness and move toward a more humane world."

Last week, during remarks at a Washington, DC breakfast for
Illinois constituents, Senator Barak Obama, fielded a question from
ANCA Eastern U.S. Executive Director Karine Birazian about his
support for the Armenian Genocide Resolution. In his response, he
explained to the audience the basic facts about the Genocide and
promised to give careful consideration to cosponsoring the measure.
Senator Obama serves on the Foreign Relations Committee and is
among the top contenders for the 2008 Democratic Presidential
nomination. His remarks can be viewed on YouTube:

T he increase in Senate and House support for the Armenian Genocide
resolutions follows an intensive two-day Capitol Hill advocacy
program in March, organized by the ANCA and the Genocide
Intervention Network, dedicated to ending the cycle of genocide.
Over 100 anti-genocide advocates from across the United States
participated in the grassroots campaign, reaching out to all 535
Senate and House offices. The Washington, DC component of the
program was followed by local activist meetings in Congressional
districts across the U.S. during the recently-concluded two-week
April district work period.

Armenian American grassroots efforts are being opposed by
successive waves of Turkish parliamentary delegations who are
seeking to convince Representatives and Senators to reject Armenian
Genocide recognition by threatening a break in U.S.-Turkey
relations. This week’s six-member Turkish lobby team included
former Turkish Ambassador to the U.S. Sukru Elekdag, and former
Ambassador to Germany Onur Oymen.

Junior Achievement of Armenia Students Take Part in
Junior Achievement Trade Fair in Romania

`Belts,’ the student company of Etchmiatzin School Number 4,
represented Armenia’s
Junior Achievement Program at the annual JA-YE European Student Trade Fair
from April 29 to March 1 at the capital of Romania. More than 76 companies
from 30 European countries took part in the extravaganza – the annual
competition that brings together the best of student companies to
display their products. The event also gives the young entrepreneurs
an opportunity to market their goods in a European city. Throughout
the year, the students learn the theory of economics and apply their
knowledge in creating student business companies. To this end, they
conduct marketing research, issue stock to raise capital, manufacture
the product, and develop marketing strategies.

The students of Etchmiatzin School had created a unique product – a
belt made of wooden beads that could also be used as a massage
belt. The product survived a rigorous national competition in Armenia
and was chosen to represent the country internationally.

`We were so proud to
have been chosen to participate in this prestigious event. We had
worked very hard on establishing our business and were very happy to
be rewarded for all of our work,’ said Anoush Meykhanajyan, one of the
student representatives.

Anna Hovhannisyan, the designer of the product added, `I learned a lot
from the experience. It is one thing to watch other people conduct
business; it is another to actively do it. Our trip was so
wonderful. We got to learn much from other student companies and our
experiences in selling our product. We met wonderful people form all
over the world and we made so many friends. We also very much enjoyed
learning about Romania and its culture.’

Armine K. Hovannisian, Executive Director of Junior Achievement of
Armenia, accompanied the students on their five-day trip. `This is the
third year that we are taking part in this very important event. We
were honored that our nation’s diplomatic representatives attended the
trade fair and encouraged our students with their presence. We are
also grateful to Cynthia Tusan, who made it possible for our students
to continue taking part in this important event. I think the
experience is priceless for those involved.’

HIS HOLINESS RECEIVES THE CHAIRMEN OF THE THEOLOGICAL COMMISSION OF
THE TWO FAMILIES OF ORTHODOX CHURCHES

An important ecumenical meeting was held in the Catholicosate of Cilicia
in Antelias on April 17 between the chairmen of the Commission of the
theological dialogue between the Oriental and Eastern Orthodox churches –
Metropolitan Bishoy from the Coptic Orthodox Church (Oriental Orthodox) and
Metropolitan Emmanuel (Eastern Orthodox).

This dialogue between the two families of Orthodox Churches, initiated in
1983 in Geneva, had come to a halt in 1993 for several reasons. About a
month ago Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I sent a delegate to His Holiness
Aram I to discuss the possibility of renewing the dialogue. Based on his
vast experience in ecumenical relations, Catholicos Aram I had outlined the
necessary steps and the difficulties to restart the initiative.

After their meeting in Antelias, the two chairmen informed the Pontiff of
the result of their meeting. His Holiness assessed the outcome and provided
the appropriate advice.

His Holiness recently received phone calls from the General Secretary of
the World Council of Churches, Dr. Sam Kobia, and Patriarch Paulos I of the
Ethiopian Church regarding ecumenical issues.

Turkey Detains More in Bible Attack

By BENJAMIN HARVEY 04.19.07, 7:29 AM ET

Police detained five more suspects Thursday in the deaths of three men
who were found with their throats slit in a publishing house that
prints Bibles, the latest in a string of attacks targeting Christians
in the mostly Muslim country.

The arrests brought to 10 the number of suspects in custody, all
people in their late teens or early 20s, said Halil Ibrahim Dasoz,
governor of Malatya, the city in central Turkey where the killings
took place.

Malatya is known as hotbed of Turkish nationalism and as the hometown
of Mehmet Ali Agca, the gunman who tried to assassinate Pope John Paul
II in 1981.

Local media said five suspects detained Wednesday were college
students who were living at a residence that belongs to an Islamic
foundation. Some of those suspects told investigators they carried out
the killings to protect Islam, a Turkish newspaper reported.

"We didn’t do this for ourselves, but for our religion," Hurriyet
newspaper quoted one suspect as saying. "Our religion is being
destroyed. Let this be a lesson to enemies of our religion."

Turkey, a predominantly Muslim country bidding for EU membership, has
been criticized for not doing enough to protect its religious
minorities and to check rising Turkish nationalism and hostility
toward non-Muslims.

The three victims – a German and two Turkish citizens – were found
with their hands and legs bound and their throats slit at the Zirve
publishing house.

All were employees of the publishing house, which printed Bibles and
Christian literature, had been targeted previously in protests by
nationalists who accused it of proselytizing in this officially
secular country.

The German man had been living in Malatya since 2003, the mayor
said. Anatolia identified him as 46-year-old Tilman Ekkehart Geske.

"Nothing can excuse such an attack that comes at a time of great need
for peace, brotherhood and tolerance," President Ahmet Necdet Sezer
said.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan described the attack as
"savagery."

The five suspects detained Wednesday had each had been carrying copies
of a letter that read: "We five are brothers. We are going to our
deaths. We may not return," according to the state-run Anatolia news
agency.

Police said one suspect underwent surgery for head injuries after he
apparently tried to escape by jumping from a window.

Making up less than 1 percent of Turkey’s 70 million people,
Christians have increasingly become targets amid what some fear is a
rising tide of hostility toward non-Muslims.

In February 2006, a teenager fatally shot a Catholic priest as he
prayed in his church, and two more Catholic priests were attacked
later in the year. A November visit by Pope Benedict XVI was greeted
by nonviolent protests, and early this year a gunman killed Armenian
Christian editor Hrant Dink.

Authorities had vowed to deal with extremist attacks after Dink’s
murder, but Wednesday’s assault showed the violence was not slowing
down.

"The killing is a result of provocations in Turkey against
minorities," said Orhan Kemal Cengiz, a lawyer for one of the victims,
Necati Aydin. "Intolerance in general has been rising sharply in
Turkey."

The attack came ahead of presidential elections next month, a contest
that highlights fears among Turkey’s secular establishment that a
candidate from Erdogan’s Islamic-rooted party, or even Erdogan
himself, could win the job and strengthen Islamic influence on the
government.

Last weekend, hundreds of thousands of pro-secular protesters
demonstrated in the capital, Ankara. Erdogan has rejected the label of
"Islamist," citing his commitment to the EU bid.

The Vatican’s envoy to Turkey, Mons. Antonio Lucibello, told Italian
daily Il Messaggero that he thought the attack was a "sporadic event."

"We are not afraid. I’m not afraid," he said.

German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier condemned the attack
"in the strongest terms," and said he expected Turkish authorities
would "do everything to clear up this crime completely and bring those
responsible to justice."

German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democrat Party – which
opposes Turkey’s bid to join the EU – said the attacks showed the
country’s shortcomings in protecting religious freedoms.

A group of 150 lit candles and unfolded a banner that read "We are all
Christians" in downtown Istanbul but the numbers were far less than
with Dink’s murder, which was followed by widespread protests and
condemnations. More than 100,000 people marched at Dink’s funeral.

Associated Press writers Selcan Hacaoglu and Suzan Fraser in Ankara
contributed to this report.
