Alliss wins

Leigh Alliss exorcised the shock of his unexpected stoppage defeat to
Valery Odin by bouncing back with a solid points win over Varuzhan
Davtyan at the Plymouth Pavilions on Friday night. Boxing The 29
year-old Stroud fighter imposed his authority from the start of
the four-round light heavyweight clash by launching a succession of
straight rights off the jab.
Davtyan was repeatedly placed on the back foot and had no means of
escape when Alliss rattled his chin with a looping right hand towards
the end of the opening period.
But the punch landed too late in the round for the Gloucestershire
fighter to build upon and the Birmingham-based Armenian was able to
lift himself off the deck and escape to the sanctuary of his corner.
Davtyan then rallied during the second period before Alliss reasserted
his authority by proving more nimble on his toes and landing with a
succession of precise two and three-punch combinations in the second
half of the fight.
“It was very important to bounce back with a win,” said Alliss.
“The knockdown came too close to the end of the first round for me
to follow through, otherwise I might have been able to finish it early.
“But a win is a win and if it has to be on points then that is what
happens.
“I was pleased that I got my jab going early in the fight, but there
are some things I need to concentrate on.” Alliss is back in action
on June 24 at Ashton Gate.
