Transit through Georgia. Azerbaijan exported 9.6 million tons to Armenia in January-April

Photo: 1lurer.am

Despite the complex political background, trade and economic contacts between Baku and Yerevan show some dynamics due to the use of transit routes. During the first four months of 2026, the volume of exports from Azerbaijan to the Armenian market reached the limit of 9.6 million US dollars.

According to the official statistical data of the State Customs Committee of Azerbaijan, which were published by local mass media, the volume of recorded deliveries is 0.08 percent of the country’s total exports during the specified period. Trade cooperation between the countries is carried out mainly by using the logistics capabilities of neighboring Georgia.

In this context, the transit of energy carriers in December was a significant event. At that time, a large railway rolling stock consisting of twenty-two wagons arrived in Armenia for the first time through the territory of Georgia, which delivered around 1300 tons of fuel produced by the Azerbaijani state energy company Socar.

Incident in “Zvartnots”. the court extended the forced treatment of the Russian citizen

Photo: sputnik

The appeal criminal court of RA rejected the appeal of the defense attorney of the Russian citizen seeking asylum, leaving unchanged the coercive measure of medical nature applied to the man accused of hooliganism. The court made such a decision based on the lack of medical documents certifying the improvement of the health condition.

The incident, on the basis of which criminal proceedings were initiated, took place in mid-July last year. According to the case materials, while in the departure hall of the “Zvartnots” international airport, the foreigner grossly violated the public order. Showing a clear contemptuous attitude towards the environment and moral norms, he threw a bottle of alcoholic drink in the direction of the benches, and also uttered curses and obscene expressions directed at Armenian women, the nation and RA Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. Such aggressive actions disturbed the peace of passengers and the normal operation of the airport.

On charges of hooliganism, the court imposed medical supervision as a security measure, the term of which was extended in April of this year until June 10. The accused’s lawyer appealed against this decision, arguing that his client’s mental state has improved significantly, so there is no longer any need for a coercive measure.

The appellate court, however, recorded that the defense did not present any medical certificate documenting the improvement, effectively depriving the court of the opportunity to evaluate the circumstance. As a result, the presence of grounds and conditions for continuing the surveillance was recorded. At present, the Russian citizen continues to stay in one of the mental health centers of the RA Ministry of Health.

Human rights activists condemn the targeting of Artsakh residents under the pretext of a video

Photo: news.am

In Armenia, the anonymous video with the participation of armed men, in which threats are made to the head of the government, received a great public and legal response. While the law enforcement officers have initiated criminal proceedings under the article of preparation for murder, human rights defenders are sounding the alarm, urging not to use the incident to instill discrimination against those forcibly displaced from Nagorno Karabakh.

The “Five Human Rights Defenders Initiative” made a statement, strongly condemning the way of using the video message of five masked persons as an opportunity and inciting public tension towards the Artsakh Armenians. Experts were especially concerned by the fact that the prime minister repeatedly emphasized the Artsakh dialect of the authors of the clip in his public speeches. According to human rights defenders, such rhetoric will inevitably lead to the rise of hatred towards the people of Artsakh.

The reason for the escalation of the situation was the video circulating on social networks, where unknown persons, masked and allegedly armed with assault rifles, make direct threats of physical reprisals to Nikol Pashinyan in the Artsakh dialect. The response of the Prime Minister followed during the pre-election meeting held on May 18 in the Arabkir administrative district of the capital. The head of the government countered the anonymous persons with very harsh and offensive language, urging them to voluntarily surrender to the law enforcement officers and promising to find and severely punish each of them.

Along with the political statements, the incident also received a legal evaluation. The Investigative Committee of Armenia has initiated criminal proceedings on the grounds of preparation for murder by a group of persons, illegal circulation of firearms and ammunition, and computer sabotage.

According to the pre-investigative body, the video containing a real threat to the Prime Minister’s life was illegally caught and distributed on the Internet with motives of political intolerance and hatred, combined with hooliganism. Currently, the law enforcement agencies are conducting an active investigation to find out the identity of the persons who committed the crime.

Ambassador of Azerbaijan to Turkey mentioned the condition of opening the borders with Armenia

Photo: minval.az

The process of normalization of relations between Armenia, Azerbaijan and Turkey and the possible opening of borders directly depend on the signing of the peace treaty and the constitutional changes in Yerevan. This was stated by the Ambassador of Azerbaijan to Turkey, Rashad Mammadov, emphasizing the close coordination of the actions of Baku and Ankara.

In an interview given to the Turkish Cumhuriyet newspaper on May 18, the diplomat, answering the question about Baku’s obstructing role in the opening of the Armenian-Turkish border, noted that the processes of regional regulation are proceeding in parallel. According to him, Azerbaijan and Turkey coordinate every diplomatic step and move forward exclusively together.

Mammadov claims that the main obstacle to peace remains the Constitution of Armenia, in which Baku sees territorial claims. The ambassador expressed his belief that after the parliamentary elections to be held on June 7, a constitutional referendum will be held in Armenia, which will allow the parties to finally sign the already initialed peace agreement.

Such rhetoric has become traditional for the Azerbaijani political leadership. On international platforms, official Baku regularly and purposefully connects the establishment of peace with the amendment of the Mother Law of the neighboring republic.

This position is fully shared by the Turkish side, synchronizing its foreign policy messages with Azerbaijan. Official Ankara openly declares that establishment of diplomatic relations with Yerevan will become possible only in the context of Armenian-Azerbaijani reconciliation. The latest statement of Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan is cited as confirmation of this direction, where he publicly assured that the Armenian-Turkish border will be opened immediately after the signing of the peace treaty between Baku and Yerevan.

Verelq: We strongly condemn any call for violence. Iveta Tonoyan

In response to the questions of many media, I present our position regarding the sensational video with the participation of masked persons.

We strongly condemn any call for violence, unconstitutional action or manifestation. Such phenomena are unacceptable.

We call on the law enforcement agencies to reveal all the circumstances as soon as possible, to hold the guilty accountable. The law enforcement system, if desired, can do this, because it has all the necessary resources and tools.

At the same time, it is important to dispel the suspicions spread among the public that government circles may be behind the distribution of the video.

At the same time, we are convinced that any video, regardless of its content, cannot and should not become an occasion for spreading anti-Artsakh propaganda, public enmity or public hatred, especially by the current authorities.

Today more than ever we need internal solidarity and responsible public discourse.

In Meeting with Pope, Aram I Emphasizes Artsakh Armenians’ Rights, Fate of Det

Catholicos Aram I meets with Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican on May 18

His Holiness Aram I, Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia on Monday met with Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican and discussed issues related to Artsakh Armenians, including their right to return to their homeland and the fate of Armenian prisoners being held in Baku.

During the meeting, Catholicos Aram I first addressed the following issues: the establishment of a common date for Easter, the designation of a commemorative day for all martyrs, and the convening of a Third Vatican Council, emphasizing the urgent necessity of these matters within the life of the universal Christian Church.

Pope Leo XIV welcomes Catholicos Aram I to the Vatican

Then turning to the issue of Artsakh, the Catholicos stressed the right of the Armenians of Artsakh to return under international guarantees, the preservation of churches and historical monuments in accordance with international law, and the urgent need for the immediate release of the Artsakh leaders currently detained in Baku.

Aram I also spoke about the current situation in Lebanon, underscoring the sovereignty of the Lebanese state and its authority throughout all Lebanese territories, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon, and the need to uphold the ceasefire agreement. Naturally, he also emphasized the importance of the ecumenical movement, stressing in this context the priority of giving special attention to moral and ethical issues alongside theological questions.

The Pope expressed his views and and support on the aforementioned, while also offering the necessary clarifications from his side.

Following the first meeting, the Catholicos and the Pope held another private conversation, exchanging views and concerns on these and other related matters.

The private meeting between the two spiritual leaders was followed by an official exchange of addresses in the presence of members of His Holiness’s delegation and representatives of the Vatican.

The Pope and the Catholicos exchange remarks

In his address, Aram I referred to the historic relationship between the Armenian Church and the Vatican, a relationship that expanded significantly during the period of the Cilician Armenian Kingdom after the 11th century. This relationship was further strengthened with the emergence of the ecumenical movement and found _expression_ through theological dialogues, inter-church meetings, and various forms of cooperation. The Catholicos then highlighted two important points.

He expressed his deep gratitude for the support shown by the Vatican regarding the Armenian Genocide and the restoration of the rights of the Armenian people, as well as for its support of the right of self-determination of the people of Artsakh.

The Catholicos welcomed the Vatican’s support for Lebanon, recalling that Lebanon occupies a special place in the life of the Armenian nation, as it became the center of the renaissance of the Armenian nation following the Genocide. He also emphasized Lebanon’s importance as a country of Christian-Muslim coexistence.

Underscoring the special importance of inter-church relations, Aram I stated that the Catholicosate of the Great House of Cilicia would continue its close cooperation with the Vatican and, more broadly, with the Catholic Church in the same ecumenical spirit and commitment.

In his remarks, Pope Leo XIV likewise referred to the relationship between the Armenian Church and the Catholic Church, particularly during the Cilician period, and later to its further development after the Catholicosate of Cilicia was transferred to Antelias, Lebanon.

Within this context, he also praised Aram I’s the important role in the ecumenical movement, especially through the World Council of Churches and in expanding cooperation with the Catholic Church. In his remarks, the Pope referred to Saint Nerses Shnorhali as a champion of inter-church relations.

“My thoughts turn to Saint Nerses the Gracious, Catholicos of Cilicia, who may be regarded as a pioneer of ecumenism – and whose recent inclusion in the Roman Martyrology is a further example of that ‘ecumenism of the saints’ which already unites our Churches,” the Pope said, further stressing the importance of Lebanon both for Christianity in the region and as a model of Christian-Muslim coexistence.

Following the official exchange of addresses, Aram I introduced the archbishops, bishops and clergy who were members of the delegation, which includes Western Prelate Archbishop Kegham Khacherian.

During a gift exchange ceremony, the Catholicos presented the Pope with a replica of the Gospel of Partserpert, while the Pope offered a bronze sculpture depicting the First Ecumenical Council of Nicaea.

Subsequently, a joint service was held in the Urban VIII Chapel of the Apostolic Palace under the presidency of Pope Leo XIV and Catholicos Aram I. The ceremony consisted of prayers and hymns drawn from the liturgical tradition of the Armenian Church.

Pashinyan Vows to ‘Kill’ His Rivals During Confrontation With Yet Another Wom

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan is seen angrily confronting a women during a campaign rally in Yerevan on May 18

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan vowed to “kill” his political rivals during a confrontation with yet another woman who deigned to voice her views on Artsakh during a campaign rally in Yerevan on Monday.

The incident, captured on video and widely circulated on social media, comes a weeks after the now-infamous outburst by Pashinyan against an Artsakh Armenian and her child on the Yerevan Metro.

Pashinyan used a version of the word “kill” that is commonly associated with the death of an animal. His threat to wipe out his rivals stemmed unhinged shouting match by the prime minister when a disgruntled woman approached him and accused him of having “stolen my fatherland, presumably referring to Artsakh.

The woman, who was later identified as Arpine Soghoyan, continued by saying, “You have wiped out a whole young generation. “You have stolen my brother, my joy. You’ve tried to bring us to our knees. But we haven’t gotten on our knees.”

“If you are Rob, I’m going to bring Rob to his knees, Rob is going to go to prison, I’m going to kill Rob,” Pashinyan shouted back, referring to former president Robert Kocharian. “I’m also going to bring the Kaluga man (Samvel Karapetian) to his knees and take him out. Serzh [Sarkisian] and Gago [Gagik Tsarukyan] as well.”

Pashinyan also rejected Soghoyan’s claim that he has “ruined the country.”

“You have ruined, plundered it with Karabakh,” Pashinyan shouted back in what appeared to be another attack on Artsakh Armenians.

Soghoyan’s daughter, Tatevik, who is an attorney, told Azatutyun.am that her mother, who is a gynecologist and an obstetrician was asked to resign her post after the public argument on Monday.

Dr. Soghoyan, who is the sister of Hrant Papikyan, who has been missing since the 2020 Artsakh War, currently holds two positions, one at the Polytechnic Clinic and the other at a private hospital. Tatevik Soghoyan did not specify which establishment had asked her mother to resign.

Yerevan Mayor Tigran Avinyan earlier had rejected that any individual should be removed from their position due to their political views.

Pashinyan continued his rant against Dr. Soghoyan by blaming his election challengers for a newly released video in which masked men speaking in an apparent Artsakh Armenian dialect are for his violent overthrow. He described the unknown men as “fugitives” from Artsakh and said he will “take them out” too, Azatutyun.am reported.

It is unclear where from where the video emanated, but it was aired by several media outlets and was shared by many of Pashinyan’s Civil Contract members when the prime minister posted it following his shouting match with Dr. Soghoyan.

The two-minute video shows five men wearing masks and brandishing weapon while accusing Pashinyan of “selling out” Artsakh. The men vowed that the prime minister “will answer for” that.

“So they have masks on, as if they are tough guys. Where were these scumbags during the war?” Pashinyan said in a video on social media.

“Do you know why they are wearing masks? Because as soon as they take off their masks, we will see that these are the ones who have filled their pockets, fled, left our soldiers alone, and I do not rule out shooting them in the back,” Pashinyan accused.

Armenia’s Investigative Committee said it has launched a criminal probe in connection with the video. In a statement the Investigative Committee said the probe was “over allegations involving preparation for murder by a group of individuals, computer sabotage, and the illegal circulation of firearms and ammunition. A pre-trial investigation is underway to identify those responsible.”

Opposition activists were quick to accuse Pashinyan and his campaign team of releasing the video in order to create chaos ahead of the elections.

According to Ishkhan Saghatelyan, a lawmaker from the Armenia bloc, the video “has the government’s fingerprints on it, where Pashinyan stages it and then turns into a tool to threaten people.”

“That is, when he is in trouble, he concocts a staged attack of terrorism, an assassination attempt against him, with the aim of sowing seeds among the people early and thereby justifying his illegal steps against the opposition, violence and arrests, and the overthrow of the country’s constitutional order in general,” Saghatelyan added.

Saghatelyan urged Pashinyan not to create such scenarios, because, he said the opposition has no intention of killing or harming him. Instead, he insisted that Pashinyan should stand trial.

“Our people need you alive and well. We will do everything to ensure your safety, because our people need you alive. For what? So that you can testify in court why and how you surrendered Artsakh, why you caused the death of around 5,000 people, who are your accomplices, why you did this betrayal and all this to the state of our people?” Saghatelyan added.

Similar statements were made by other opposition candidates including Narek Karapetyan of “Strong Armenia” bloc and former human rights defender Arman Tatoyan of “Wings of Unity” party.

Asbarez: Glendale’s St. Mary’s Church Celebrates 50th Anniversary

A gala marking the 50th anniversary of St. Mary’s Church in Glendale was held on Sunday, May 3, at the Glendale Hilton Hotel, under the auspices of Western Prelate Archbishop Kegham Khacherian.

The gala was sponsored by Ara Ter Minassian and Marlene Ter Minassian, the son and daughter of the church’s founding benefactor family. The event was organized by the 50th Anniversary Committee chaired by community activist and benefactor Garo Eshgian.

Ara and Marlene Ter Minassian with Prelate Khacherian and Church and Prelacy officials

Among those in attendance were former Western Prelates Archbishops Moushegh Mardirossian and Torkom Donoyan; the Chairman of the Prelacy Executive Council Vahe Hovaguimian and his wife Hasmig; members of the Executive Council and their spouses; the Dean of St. Mary’s Armenian Apostolic Church Very Rev. Fr. Zareh Sarkissian; members of the clergy; members of the Board of Trustees and affiliated church bodies; delegates to the Prelacy’s National Representative Assembly; Glendale Mayor Ardashess Kassakhian; past and current city officials; Armenian community leaders; benefactors and supporters of the Western Prelacy; regional leaders, deacons, scribes, choir members; and more than 400 guests.

Following the blessing of the tables, Mistress of Ceremonies Christa Kurkjian delivered the evening’s opening remarks, following which Berj Karazian performed the national anthems of the United States and Armenia.

Very Reverend Zareh Sarkissian, St. Mary’s parish priest, then delivered the opening remarks for the church’s 50th anniversary celebration, welcoming the attendees.

“Today, we are gathered here not only to celebrate a fiftieth jubilee, but also to experience in our lives the living presence of God’s indescribable grace.” Very Rev. Sarkissian noted that the church’s five decades of service represent far more than a number, embodying instead the story of generations marked by sacrifice, faith, loyalty, tears, and joy.

Glendale Mayor Ardashess Kassakhian Judge Zaven Sinanian Board of Trustees chair Garo Kurkjian Very Reverend Zareh Sarkissian

Speaking on the meaning and mission of the Armenian Church, Sarkissian emphasized its spiritual role and national identity as a “teacher of mind and soul.” He added that St. Mary’s Church serves as the crown and refuge of Armenian Christian identity and as the guardian of the sacred faith and traditions of our forefathers, stressing that it “is not confined within time, but having come from eternity, it moves toward eternity.”

Guests then viewed a documentary prepared by Seta Krikorian presenting the church’s fifty-year history. A second video message followed, during which attendees received the congratulatory remarks, blessings, and well wishes of His Holiness Aram I, Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia.

The next part of the program featured remarks by Glendale Mayor Kassakhian, who congratulated the spiritual center of the heavily Armenian-populated city of Glendale on its golden jubilee. Reflecting on the importance of prayer not only in personal and family life, but also in overcoming national crises and global turmoil, he expressed hope that St. Mary’s Church would continue to serve as a leading force for Armenian unity, empowerment, and spiritual and cultural mission.

Western Prelate Archbishop Kegham Kacherian

During the gala, Archbishop Khacherian and Chairman of the St. Mary’s Board of Trustees Garo Kurkjian honored seven deacons who had faithfully served at the Holy Altar of St. Mary’s Armenian Apostolic Church for more than twenty-five years. Each deacon was presented with a commemorative crystal plaque by Archbishop Khacherian. The honorees were Jacques Naldjian, Hrair Tedjirian, Kevork Dolmadjian, Raffi Naldjian, Raffi Keshishian, Setrag Karadolian, and Raffi Kurkjian.

The program then continued with a candle-lighting ceremony, followed by an address by Honorable Judge Zaven Sinanian, who reflected on his personal and family connection to St. Mary’s Church.

Sinanian described the spiritual center as a bridge between America and Armenia and as a unifying force that connects our present lives and national identity by transforming them into an active and engaged collective community.

Referring to modern Armenian history, he stated that the scars of the Armenian Genocide carried out by the Ottoman Empire remain deeply rooted within Armenians today, as descendants of a people deprived of their homeland.

Addressing the current circumstances surrounding Artsakh, Sinanian emphasized that despite the immense tragedies inflicted upon the Armenian people, Armenians continue to preserve with dignity the traditions of their ancestors and the aspiration to keep the Armenian Church strong, flourishing, and enduring for future generations.

“Who, in the next 50 years, will take our places and honor us just as we today honor the founding generations of this church,” stated Sinanian. He concluded his remarks with a pan-Armenian message, expressing that with God’s help, the words “Armenia, faith, and remembrance” must remain alive within the life of the Armenian people for generations to come.

The congratulatory remarks of Archbishop Khacherian focused both on the anniversary gala and the previously held “Golden Jubilee Concert” in April honoring the church’s 50th anniversary.

The Prelate noted that it was no coincidence that St. Mary’s Church had consistently experienced growth and success throughout its fifty-year journey.

On this occasion, he quoted the words of benefactor Ara Ter Minassian: “What greater satisfaction can a person experience in life than the great joy of building a church?” The Prelate described these words as a symbol of enduring success and connected them to the centuries-old Armenian tradition in which benefactors throughout history built churches as national strongholds dedicated to the preservation of faith and identity.

Archbishop Khacherian also recognized the benefactors whose generosity has enabled the faithful sons and daughters of our people, and entire generations, to recognize the Armenian-Christian spirit as an inseparable part of their identity. He further emphasized that, through their benefaction, they continue to contribute not only financially, but also morally, to the spiritual, national, and cultural life that ensures the enduring success of the Armenian community.

Referring to those honored during the gala, Archbishop Khacherian praised the spirit of volunteerism demonstrated by the deacons, all responsible bodies, and volunteers who have worked tirelessly for the flourishing of the church. Reiterating his previous remarks that Los Angeles serves as a “benefactor” community for the Armenian Diaspora, the Prelate especially praised the Armenian community of Glendale and its Prelacy Armenian Schools for their continued accomplishments and successes.

At the conclusion of his remarks, the Prelate warmly acknowledged the Chairman of the Executive Council, Vahe Hovaguimian, along with the members of the Executive Council. He highly praised the dedication and service rendered by all past members of the Executive Council throughout the decades.

He also especially commended all the benefactors of the Western Prelacy and expressed his appreciation to all past and present Boards of Trustees, officers, employees, and devoted volunteers of St. Mary’s Church.

The Prelate further extended special recognition to the members of the 50th Anniversary Committee, particularly the Committee Chairman, Garo Eshgian, for their selfless service and for commemorating the half-century milestone of their beloved church through such distinguished and high-caliber celebrations.

Archbishop Khacherian offered his blessings upon all those gathered in the hall and encouraged everyone to continue serving God and the Armenian nation with the same spirit, devotion, and dedication as they look ahead to the next 50 years.

The gala dedicated to the 50th anniversary of St. Mary’s Church concluded with a moving performance of the hymn “Cilicia” by Berj Karazian, joined in unison by all guests in attendance. The evening also featured musical performances by the “Element” band, which entertained guests with beautiful musical selections throughout the program.
