Ausstellung zum Genozid an Armeniern
Dietzenbach · 10. Februar · swo · Der Künstler Deniz Alt hat den
Völkermord an den Armeniern zu einem seiner künstlerischen
Schwerpunkte gemacht. Nun präsentiert er seine zum Teil lebensgroßen
Bilder im Dietzenbacher Bürgerhaus, Offenbacher Straße 11.
Vom 18. Februar bis zum 11. März wird die Ausstellung unter dem Namen
“Kreuz und Halbmond” zu sehen sein. Die Bilder von Deniz Alt waren in
den vergangenen Jahren unter anderem in Frankfurt, in Wiesbaden und
zuletzt im neuen Museum der KZ-Gedenkstätte Sachsenhausen zu sehen.
Die Bilder beschäftigen sich insbesondere mit der Deportation der
Armenier im Jahr 1915. Horst Schäfer, diesjähriger Preisträger für
Völkerverständigung in Dietzenbach, will bei der Vernissage am
Freitag, 18. Februar, 19 Uhr, im Bürgerhaus den Künstler und sein
Werk vorstellen.
Täter nicht dargestellt
Dem Völkermord an den Armeniern durch das Osmanische Reich 1915
fielen bis zu 1,5 Millionen Menschen zum Opfer. Bis heute wird der
Genozid von der Türkei geleugnet. Auch die aktuelle türkische
Regierung bestreitet den Völkermord und versucht auf diplomatischen
Wegen, andere Staaten davon abzuhalten, den Völkermord offiziell zu
verurteilen. In den vergangenen Jahren erkannten jedoch noch weitere
Staaten und Organisationen den Völkermord an, beispielsweise
Frankreich, Italien und Russland. Nach Angaben des Künstlers Deniz
Alt sind seine Bilder nicht als Anklage oder Beschuldigung zu
verstehen. Bewusst hat er auf die Darstellung der Täter verzichtet.
Doch trotz des traurigen Themas, so Alt, sollen die Bilder die
Hoffnung des “Nicht-Vergessen-Werdens” ausdrücken.

Schwierige Wahrheit;
Schulen und Schulbuchverlage ringen mit dem Armeniergenozid
Ist der Skandal um die Streichung des Genozids an den Armeniern aus
dem einzigen deutschen Geschichtslehrplan, in dem er jemals
aufgeführt wurde, beigelegt? Und wenn ja, wie? Eine präzise Antwort
darauf ist schwierig, ja unmöglich, weil es gleichzeitig mehrere zu
geben scheint. Gemeinsam ist ihnen nur, daß sie fast alle so klingen,
als handle es sich um Antworten auf Anfragen an den legendären Sender
Eriwan.
Haben nun türkische Diplomaten den brandenburgischen
Ministerpräsidenten bei Lammcarré in Rotweinjus dazu gebracht, den
Klammersatz zum Völkermord, den es ihrer Ansicht nach nie gab, zu
streichen? Im Prinzip nein, hatte schließlich der türkische
Botschafter der “Berliner Zeitung” gesagt. Sein Konsul sei in Potsdam
nur vorstellig geworden, um die türkische Sicht auf Vorgänge zu
erläutern, die im Westen als Genozid der Türken an den Armeniern
wahrgenommen würden. Doch werde immer verschwiegen, daß in diesen
gewaltsamen Auseinandersetzungen mehr Muslime als Armenier den Tod
fanden. Auch der Ministerpräsident sagt, nein, er habe die Streichung
nicht wegen der türkischen Diplomaten veranlaßt. Aber es bleibe bei
der Korrektur, gleichwohl gehöre das Thema in den Unterricht. Ähnlich
antwortete der Berliner Bildungssenator Böger. Die
Nachrichtenagenturen, auf kurze, klare Informationen bedacht,
meldeten daraufhin, Berlin werde den Armeniergenozid nicht in seinen
Lehrplan aufnehmen. Nein, sagt der Böger-Sprecher Frisse, so könne
man das nicht interpretieren. Lehrplanziel in Berlin seien
“Kompetenzen”, einzelne Themen, die dorthin führen sollen, müsse kein
Lehrplan aufzählen.
Gute Lehrer ficht so etwas nicht an. Als ein Lehrstück eigener Art
sieht Manfred Behrens vom Ossietzky-Gymnasium in Berlin-Pankow die
verwunschenen Politiker-Statements. Gemeinsam mit Kollegen hat er an
Matthias Platzeck geschrieben und ihm empfohlen, seinen Briefwechsel
mit türkischen Diplomaten den Schulbuchverlagen zu übergeben, weil
diese Dokumente die Schwierigkeiten mit der Wahrheit besser erhellen
als mancher Kommentar in den (seltenen) Lehrmaterialien zum Thema.
Mit Schülern der Abiturstufe hat er den Genozid unter anderem auch im
Deutschunterricht behandelt, die Romane von Franz Werfel, Edgar
Hilsenrath, Armin T. Wegner und anderen ergänzt in Geschichtsstunden
und Politischer Weltkunde. Entstanden ist daraus eine kleine
Ausstellung. Behrens bestätigt wie viele seiner Kollegen, daß es im
Prinzip keiner besonderen Aufforderung bedarf, das schwierige Thema
in den Unterricht zu nehmen. Doch eine Hervorhebung im Lehrplan habe
durchaus Vorteile, denn die Schulbuchverlage könnten sich endlich
aufgefordert sehen, ihre bislang recht spärlichen Angebote zu
erweitern.
Tatsächlich muß man lange suchen, um in Geschichtsbüchern, die das
Osmanische Reich oder die Zeit vor und nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg
behandeln, mehr als eine Erwähnung der Armeniertragödie zu finden. In
Band 1 “Epochen und Strukturen” (Diesterweg Verlag) ist es ein
einziger Satz, der jedoch allen diplomatischen Tiefenprüfungen
standhalten dürfte: “Die türkische Politik erzwungener Assimilation
von oben”, heißt es dort, “provozierte Widerstand von unten, zunächst
der Armenier, gesteigert zu Massakern an Armeniern 1895/96, 1909 und
im Schatten des ersten Weltkrieges 1915/16, als die Türken durch
muslimische Kurden rund eine Million Armenier ermorden ließen.” Der
Schroedel Verlag behandelt das Thema als einziger in seiner
“Geschichte konkret” ausführlicher und vor allem so kontrovers, wie
die Debatte in der EU und der Türkei auch geführt wird.
Weiterführendes Unterrichtsmaterial gibt es in Deutschland so gut wie
nicht, was erklärt, warum sich jetzt sehr viele Lehrer an das
Bochumer Genozidforschungsinstitut wandten, dessen Lehrbuch zu
Prozessen und Strukturen kollektiver Gewalt und Völkermord
Brandenburger Politiker in vorauseilendem Gehorsam wieder
abbestellten. Die Schulen sind also zuweilen besser als ihr Ruf und
vor allem couragierter als Politiker, wenn es darum geht, unsere
Standards historischer Aufklärung gegen ideologische Interpretationen
zu verteidigen.
Faruk Sen, Direktor des Essener Institutes für Türkeistudien, ist
trotzdem nicht wohl bei dem Gedanken, der Armeniergenozid, dessen
exemplarische Bedeutung er durchaus anerkennt, könnte im Unterricht
behandelt werden, ehe sich Armenien und die Türkei auf eine
“gemeinsame Sicht” geeinigt hätten. Er wolle dafür plädieren, das
Thema einstweilen aus dem Unterricht herauszuhalten, weil er fürchte,
Vorbehalte gegen Migranten könnten sich verstärken. Die
Ossietzky-Schule in Berlin-Kreuzberg würde ihm da nicht zustimmen.
Anders als die gleichnamige Lehranstalt in Pankow wird sie vor allem
von Migrantenkindern, darunter viele Türken, besucht. Schulleiter
Rähme weiß, daß Armenien für einige Eltern seiner Schüler ein
Reizthema ist, doch kein Lehrer mag sich vorschreiben lassen, deshalb
auf Aufklärung zu verzichten.
Die Reaktionen auf den grotesken Potsdamer Lehrplanstreit, darunter
irritierend viele wütende Attacken türkischer Akademiker, zeigen aber
auch, daß es hier um mehr geht als um eine Schulstunde. Die einen
würden es lieber als “interkulturellen Schulkonflikt” wieder unter
den Teppich kehren, doch mehren sich die Stimmen, die eine Klärung
fordern. “Über den eher beiläufigen Anlaß hinaus müssen wir eine
grundsätzliche Debatte über europäische Standards der
Erinnerungskultur anstoßen”, sagt Martin Sabrow, Direktor des
Potsdamer Zentrums für Zeithistorische Forschungen, “gerade weil der
Armeniergenozid einen umstrittenen Konflikt repräsentiert, bei dem
ein Generalkonsens nicht in Sicht ist.”

REPORT ON NAGORNY KARABAKH IN PACE AND LATER ADOPTION OF PACE
RESOLUTION DICTATED FROM WASHINGTON: RUBEN TOVMASIAN
YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 12. ARMINFO. The report of PACE Rapporteur on Nagorny
Karabakh David Atkinson and later adoption of the PACE resolution
were dictated from Washington. First Secretary of Central Committee
of the Communist Party of Armenia Ruben Tovmasian stated during the
news conference at the discussion club Azdak.
According to him, the recent events round the process of settlement of
the Karabakh problem are links of one chain – statements of Assistant
of State Secretary of the United states Elizabeth Jones, the report
and resolution of PACE, the arrival of the OSCE Monitoring mission –
all they took place by order of official Washington. The untalented
foreign political course of the incumbent authorities of Armenia
resulted in that “the ring round Armenia and Nagorny Karabakh is
being tightened”, the leader of Armenian communists stated.

THE ONLY REAL REVOLUTIONARY PARTY IN ARMENIA IS CPA, THINKS LEADER
OF ARMENIAN COMMUNISTS
YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 12. ARMINFO. The only ideology the people believes
and has believed is the socialistic ideology, and the only real
revolutionary party is the Communist party of Armenia. First Secretary
of the Central Committee of CPA Ruben Tovmasian stated during the news
conference at the discussion club Azdak, commenting on the statement
of leader of the party “New Times” Aram Karapetian, according to which
the party New Times begins the process of national revolution in the
country in April 2005.
According to Tovmasian, the revolution is a hard process, and it is
necessary to get prepared for it thoroughly, and not declare about
it during the press conferences. Speaking about the current internal
situation in the country the leader of Armenian communists stated that
the social-economic situation in the country remains grave, the plunder
of the country is being continued, rates of unemployment and emigration
from the country increase. Socialism gave all and to everybody –
free apartments, job, medical service and education. Just that’s why
the people will follow only the Communist Party of Armenia, and nobody
else, the first secretary of CPA CC is sure. He also mentioned that
the Communist Party does not intend to join to anybody and become an
ally of a political bloc or federation – other political forces of
the republic must think to consolidate with the CPA”.

AZERBAIJAN INDIGNANT AT VLADIMIR ZHIRINOVSKY’S PROPOSAL FOR INTEGRATING
NAGORNO KARABAKH REPUBLIC IN CIS
YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 12. ARMINFO. Azerbaijan is indignant at the proposal
bo Vice Speaker of Russia’s State Duma Vladimir Zhirinovsky for
integrating Nagorno Karabakh Republic into the CIS.
To remind, in his recent statement Zhirinovsky also called Nagorny
Karabakh a historical Armenian land. But this is not his only such
statement. A few days ago Zhirinovsky made a statement about Kazakhstan
in which Almaty has seen calls for ethnic strife and disrespect for
national dignity. As a result the Kazakh FM has proclaimed Zhirinovsky
persona non grata.
Azeri MP Mais Safarli says that Azerbaijan should follow Kazakhstan’s
example. Moreover if attempting to enter Azerbaijan Zhirinovsky must
be arrested.
The Azeri FM is more amicable. FM representative Tair Tagizade agrees
that Zhirinovsky’s statement on Kazakhstan was insulting but there was
no insult of the Azeri people in his statement on nagorny Karabakh. He
just showed that he does not know the history, roots and development
of the Azeri-Armenian conflict and is completely incompetent in the
politics. “We can just regret at his statements,” says Tagizade. But
these statements should not, cannot and will not affect Russia’s
position of recognition of Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity and
that country’s efforts in the framework of OSCE Minsk Group.

LEADER OF ARMENIAN COMMUNISTS TAKES PART IN CONGRESS OF UNION OF
COMMUNIST PARTIES OF REPUBLICS OF FORMER USSR
YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 12. ARMINFO. Recently in Moscow the congress of
the Union of communist parties of the CIS countries made a resolution
calling on the CIS countries to recognize the genocide of Armenians
of 1915 in Ottoman Turkey and “to raise this question at European
level”. First Secretary of Central Communist party of Armenia Ruben
Tovmasian informed during the news conference at the discussion club
Azdak. It should be noted that Ruben Tovmasian had taken part in the
Moscow forum. According to him, even Azerbaijani communists voted
“for” the adoption of the resolution.

HEARINGS ON CURRENT SITUATION IN ARMENIA TO BE ORGANIZED IN LATE
FEBRUARY
YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 12. ARMINFO. The Armenian Parliament’s permanent
commission on defence, national security and internal affairs
is organizing hearings on the country’s current situation with
the participation of the force and the law structures, informed NA
Speaker Artur Baghdasaryan in the interview to “Haykakan jamanak”
newspaper commenting on frequent cases of bloody quarrels in Armenia.
Baghdasaryan noted that everyone will be given an opportunity to
express his position. “Not the power must restrain the law, but the

HEAD OF THE CHURCH OF DENMARK MET WITH CATOLICOS OF KILIKIA

The Head of the Church of Denmark, Bishop Erik Norman Svendsen visited
the Catholicosate of Kilikia on the 8th of February and held a meeting
with His Holiness Aram I. The two spiritual leaders discussed issues
related to Christian education and inter-church relations.
His Holiness expressed his belief about the importance of renewing the
ecumenical movement and making it relevant to people’s lives. In this
context, the Catholicos and His Grace also discussed the Middle East,
the birthplace of Christianity. They emphasized the importance of
speeding up the peace process and bringing to a halt the emigration
of Christians.

“If we politicize a street incident we will break up the activities
of the law enforcement bodies”, ARFD faction leader Levon Lazarian
tried to justify the vague and wait-and-see attitude of the ARFD on
the criminal situation in the country and especially on the skirmish
in one of the Yerevan districts.
Taking into consideration that so many crimes, including the murder of
party-fellow Poghos Poghosyan, is Levon Lazarian sure that the justice
will triumph without politicization of the problem? In answer to this
question he said that many criminals have already been arrested and he
believes that the law enforcement bodies will justify themselves. The
great number of armed guards and their activities he conditioned
by the absence of law on guards and mentioned of the importance of
the bill “On Guards” he had submitted to the consideration of the
National Assembly.
“In soviet times only one person had his own guards and they were
unnoticeable”, Peopleâ~@~Ys Deputy faction representative Mkrtich
Minasyan said.
Leader of RPA Galust Sahakyan used rather sharp expressions. He
stated that such incident negatively tell in the society and people
lose the feeling of security. In his opinion the authorities are
behaving naïvely and indifferently and do not combat criminal
elements. â~@~We are all to blameâ~@~], he said and added that one
cannot expect much of a policeman or investigator, who earn 20-25
thousand drams month. Sahakyan considers that the law enforcement
system badly needs reformation.

Kevorkian back in prison after temporary release for surgery

LAPEER — Assisted-suicide advocate Jack Kevorkian is back in prison
after undergoing surgery for a double hernia, his attorney said Monday.
Mayer Morganroth said Kevorkian returned to the Thumb Correctional
Facility in Lapeer on Sunday. Morganroth said Kevorkian is in pain and
will receive some follow-up treatment, but he didn’t know if Kevorkian
would be released again or if he would be treated at the prison.
“They don’t really tell us. They just grab him and take him to the
hospital,” Morganroth said.
Kevorkian, 76, is serving a 10- to 25-year sentence for second-degree
murder after being convicted of giving a fatal injection of drugs to
a Lou Gehrig’s disease patient in 1998.
He was released from prison last Thursday and underwent surgery Friday
at Foote Hospital in Jackson. Kevorkian was kept in a separate wing
apart from other patients and was under constant guard.
Kevorkian said his cell had been cleared of his books and other
belongings when he returned Sunday, Morganroth said. Morganroth said
the prison cleaned it out for security reasons but was returning
Kevorkian’s belongings on Monday.
Kevorkian has said he assisted in at least 130 deaths, but has
promised in affidavits and requests for pardon or commutation that
he will not assist in a suicide if he is released from prison. He is
eligible for parole in 2007.
Gov. Jennifer Granholm has said she won’t consider pardoning Kevorkian.
