ARMENIAN SAPPERS READY TO GO TO LEBANON IN CASE OF DEFENSE MINISTER

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ In case of availability of a command of the
Armenian Defense Minister Armenian sappers are ready to leave for
Lebanon, stated Deputy Defense Minister of Armenia, lieutenant
general Artur Aghabekian when commenting on the request by Lebanese
Ambassador to Armenia on sending a group of sappers to Lebanon
addressed at the meeting with Armenian Defense Minister Serge
Sargsian. In A. Aghabekian’s words, the Armenian center for training
sappers meeting international standards. Armenian sappers have well
removed mines in Armenian regions of Tavush and Syunik and
participate in a peace-keeping mission in Iraq at present.

Yerevan Rally Participants call all countries to recognize Genocide

PARTICIPANTS OF RALLY IN YEREVAN CALLED ALL COUNTRIES TO RECOGNIZE
ARMENIAN GENOCIDE

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ A rally marking the 84-th anniversary of the day of
murder of the person chargeable for the Armenian Genocide in Ottoman
Turkey Taleat pasha by Armenian student Soghomon Teylerian was held
in Yerevan, Regnum news agency reported. The organizers of the
meeting – the youth wing of the Armenian Revolutionary Delegation
Dashnaktsutyun (ARFD) called all countries to unite and recognize the
Armenian Genocide, not admitting Turkey to `the EU with bloody
hands.’ ARFD representative handed the European Commission Secretary
a letter addressed to the EC Chairman. The rally participants had
posters on their hands `March 16, 1921: shot on the asleep memory of
the world,’ `Freedom does not have a value if the people do not
realize the demands of freedom,’ etc. After the completion of the
action people headed to the monument to Soghomon Teylerian, where
they laid 90 flowers. It should be noted that April 24 Armenians mark
the tragic 90-th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide.

CRITERION FOR TURKEY’S ACCESSION TO EU

will not be a political criterion for Turkey,’ head of the
representation of the European Commission in Turkey Hansjorg
Kretschmer stated. The demands that the international community
recognize and condemn the Armenian Genocide, which are on the agenda
in France, raised the questions on how these demands will tell on
Turkey’s ambitious plans of accession to the EU. Hansjorg Kretschmer
noted that the decision to support the beginning of talks with Turkey
on its accession to the EU, passed December 17, 2004, evidences that
official Ankara `has met the political criteria to a considerable
degree.’

GERMAN-TURKISH RELATIONS ON PROMOTION OF GERMANY-ARMENIA RELATIONS

Peitsch did not comment on issues, referring to the impact of the
German-Turkish relations on promotion of Germany’s relations with
Armenia, Regnum news agency reported. She also refrained from
comments on Germany’s position over lifting the blockade of the
Armenian-Turkish border and recognition of the Armenian Genocide in
Ottoman Turkey within the context of prospects of Turkey’s accession
to the EU, as well as prospects of Bundestag passing a respective
resolution taking into account the position of the Democratic and
Christian-Socialist Unions of Germany (CDU/CSU). It should be
reminded that these `aiming at contributing to rapprochement between
Turkey and Armenia, as well as clearing out the share of the German
Reich participation in those tragic events’ made a proposal in
Bundestag `to commemorate the Armenian Genocide victims.’

ARMENIAN DEFENSE MINISTER MET WITH ITALIAN AMBASSADOR IN ARMENIA

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ Today Armenian Defense Minister Serge Sargsian met
with Italian Ambassador Marco Clemente, the Press Service of the
Armenian Defense Ministry reported. The newly appointed military
attache Mauro Scaccia and his deputy Cucu Giangavino were also
present at the meeting. «A new page opened in the Armenian-Italian
relations after the visit of Armenian President Robert Kocharian to
Italy. I am assured that we will be able to succeed also in the
military sphere,» Marco Clemente stated. In his turn, Serge Sargsian
emphasized notable progress in the Armenian-Italian political and
economic relations. «I want to again accentuate the role Rome, Italy
played in our history. I again become convinced that the Armenian
culture develops in Italy today, too. We must develop the military
cooperation against that positive background. I think we will succeed
without fail,» the head of the defense department of Armenia stated.
Military attache Mauro Scaccia said he was ready to work for
promoting Armenian-Italian close military cooperation in the course
of his activities in Armenia.

Putin & Kocharian to open Russian days in Armenia in late March

PUTIN AND KOCHARIAN TO OPEN RUSSIAN DAYS IN ARMENIA IN LATE MARCH

YEREVAN, MARCH 15, ARMENPRESS: Armenian deputy foreign minister
Gegham Gharibjanian told Armenpress that a great variety of events
which are to take place in Armenia this year within the frameworks of
Russia’s Year in Armenia will contribute to further strengthening of
Russian-Armenian ties. He said Russian government and parliamentary
delegations will visit Armenia in 2005 and a set of business forums
will be hosted by Yerevan.
Gharibjanian said every planned event will provide the Armenian
society with a clear picture of Russia’s political, economic and
cultural achievements and will also create a very friendly
environment for both countries’ businessmen, youth organizations and
scientists to establish new contacts. He said dozens of Russian
artists, singers and orchestras will give concerts in Armenia.
The Russian Days will kick off in late March in Yerevan. Russian
president Putin will arrive here to open them together with Armenian
president Kocharian. The deputy minister said the two presidents will
discuss a wide range of issues, including also the Karabagh conflict.

ARF YOUTH WING DEMANDS EU MEMBERS TO RECOGNIZE ARMENIAN GENOCIDE

YEREVAN, MARCH 15, ARMENPRESS: A youth organization, affiliated
with the Armenian Revolutionary Federation (ARF) marched today
through central Yerevan streets to the European Union’s office in
Yerevan to demand that EU member countries recognize the 1915
Armenian genocide committed by the government of the Ottoman Empire.
A statement by the demonstrators says Turkey has no right to become
an EU member.
The protest march was organized to coincide with the 84-th
anniversary of a Berlin court verdict that acquitted an Armenian
student Soghomon Teilerian, who killed one of the perpetrators of the
genocide, Taliat Pasha.
The statement said Turkey could join the civilized family of
European nations only after acknowledging its responsibility for mass
massacres of Armenians.

SAAKASHVILI LEAVES ARMENIAN CLERGY’S LETTER UNANSWERED

YEREVAN, MARCH 15, ARMENPRESS: Archimandrite Abgar Hovakimian, who
is the deputy head of the Armenian Church Diocese in Georgia, told
Armenpress a letter the Prelacy sent to Georgian president
Saakashvili requesting his intervention to stop further desecration
of Armenian churches and other historical monuments across Georgia
has not been responded yet. The letter also asked for a clear cut
status for the Armenian Prelacy in Georgia demanding that Armenian
churches be handed over to its management.
He said though the problem was discussed during a last week visit
to Yerevan by Georgian prime minister Zurab Noghaideli, however, a
final solution is expected to come from a meeting between the
religious leaders of Armenians and Georgians. He said Armenian
cultural and historical monuments supervised by Georgian culture
ministry are overlooked and cited a recent incident when Armenian
gravestones in the yard of Norashen Armenian church in Tbilisi were
replaced with Georgian gravestones. Days earlier Armenian cross
stones were destroyed at Gremi church complex. He said Surb Nshan
church in Akhaltsikha remains closed, while monuments there are being
destroyed.
The headquarters of the Armenian Church in Etchmiadzin told
Armenpress this problem is in their focus and they are taking steps
to attract Georgian authorities and clergy’s attention to this
problem.

DIRECTOR OF UNITED INSTITUTE FOR NUCLEAR RESEARCH

the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia, professor Alexey
Sisakian is nominated for Director of the United Institute for
Nuclear Research (he is now Deputy-Director of the UINR), Dubna town
administration Press Service reported. The election of the new
director will be held in the course of the session of the Committee
of the Plenipotentiary Representatives (CPP) of the United Institute
for Nuclear Research states. The session will be held in Dubna March
17-18. Today 18 states of the world are members of the United
Institute. Questions of UINR activities in 2004 and its plans for
2005, the fulfillment of the recommendations of the Scientific
Council and CPP decisions, UINR financial and innovation activities
will be on the agenda of the Committee session.

Individual Partnership Action Plan will be presented in end of April
– beginning of May, Deputy Defense Minister of Armenia, lieutenant
general Artur Aghabekian stated. In his wrods, with the support of
George Marshall Center a seminar devoted to the working out of the
Individual Partnership Action Plan will be held in Yerevan in April.
He also noted that with the NATO PfP Planning and Review Process-PARP
delegation questions of expansion of cooperation within PARP are
being discussed in Armenia at present.
