Public TV to Start Broadcasting in August

The Public TV (PTV) will start broadcasting during August, the Public
TV Director General Ismail Omarov told the news conference on 9
August, Trend reports.
He noted, the PTV proof programs were successfully broadcast and
during August the TV will transmit on the 14-th channel. Two TV
studios equipped with modern facilities are already prepared.
According to Omarov, in terms of its technical equipping the PTV will
be the leading TV channel in Azerbaijan. He also noted, PTV cooperates
with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technologies for
establishing the mobile 10-camera studio.
PTV is not able to transmit to Nakhchivan, Karabakh,
Zagatali-Belokani, the western and the northern part of
Azerbaijan. However, some months later the translator will be set up
and PTV will be accessible within 98% of the country’s area.
The morning PTV broadcasting will commence with the `New day’ program,
the ` Djarchi’ (`Messenger’) news issue will be broadcastevery three
hours. The PTV broadcasting will be intensive, programs on various
subjects, preparations to the elections and `soap operas’ are in the
pipeline.

It wasn’t that Robin Manoogian didn’t have an interest in computers or
technology. Rather, she was so busy running About Face Beauty Spa in
Royal Oak that she didn’t have time to stop and figure out what kind of
computers could help her better manage her shop.
Manoogian, who has done makeup for Aretha Franklin, former President
Bill Clinton and numerous anchors at local TV stations, opened her shop
nine years ago. It’s grown to 19 employees.
With a growing clientele and business, things became more complicated in
recent years. She knew there had to be a better high-tech solution to
keep track of store receipts, store products and the payroll.
But she just didn’t have time to investigate.

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — The granddaughter of former Notre Dame football
coach Ara Parseghian, whose family raised millions of dollars to pay for
research on Niemann-Pick disease, has died of the rare genetic disorder.
Sixteen-year-old Marcia Parseghian died early Saturday. She was the
longest surviving of three siblings all diagnosed with the rare and
fatal disease.
Niemann-Pick Type C affects about 500 children worldwide, and killed her
brother Michael in 1997 and sister Christa in 2001. Her older brother,
Ara, did not inherit the disease.
Marcia Parseghian’s parents, Mike and Cindy Parseghian, learned in
October 1994 that three of their four children had the disease, and they
quickly established the Ara Parseghian Medical Research Foundation to
raise money for research on Niemann-Pick Type C.
In 10 years, the foundation raised more than $22 million, with 95
percent of it going to fund research.
NP-C bears a resemblance to Alzheimer’s disease, and because it stems
from an inability to metabolize cholesterol, researchers hope work on
NP-C will help those at risk for cardiovascular disease, heart attack
and stroke.

PACE president expected

President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe
(PACE) Rene van Der Linden will visit Azerbaijan August 22-23 as part
of his tour of the region. He will visit Yerevan on August 18-19 and
Tbilisi on August 20-21. The visit targets studying the current
situation in the region, head of the CE Information Office in Baku
Ilgar Ibrahimli told AssA-Irada.
While in Baku, Van Der Linden will discuss the pre-election situation
with Azeri officials. He is due to meet with President Ilham Aliyev,
the prime minister, parliament speaker, foreign minister, as well as
NGO and media representatives.*

PEACE IN KARABAKH MAY BE REACHED NOW OR IN FAR FUTURE

for reaching peace accord in the Nagorno Karabakh conflict. In this
respect we consider the Kazan meeting of the Presidents a real
opportunity, Ruth’s opinion, peace may be reached now or in far
future. The conflict settlement within a short period of time is in
the hands of parties themselves. Issues necessary for peace are being
discussed for 18 months already, and these discussions will
continue,meet with V. Oskanian in Moscow August 23, however he said
nothing of participation of the Co-Chairs in the meeting. In the
Minister’s words, after the meeting V. Oskanian and he will present a
special report to their Presidents. It should be reminded that during
their latest visit to the region OSCE MG Co-Chairs said they hoped for
progress after the Kazan meeting. They said the parties agreed at
their Warsaw to continue talks rapidly. Thus, the Co-Chairs held a
number of meetings with Azeri and Armenian officials within a few
months. Besides, the Co-Chairs stated that blaming them in not solving
the problem is incorrect, as conflict settlement depends not as much
on the mediators as on the parties. It should also be noted that after
his visit to the US E. Mammadyarov announced not great, however
progress in the solution of the issue. In his words, although talks
are hard, he is optimistic over the coming meetings, the 525 Baku
newspaper reported.

86% OF YEREVAN POPULATION BELIEVES MAYOR OF YEREVAN SHOULD BE DIRECTLY

YEREVAN, August 9. /ARKA/. 86% of the Yerevan population believes that
the Mayor of Yerevan should be elected by the population through
direct elections, the public opinion study center Vox Populi reports.
The Center has conducted a survey through telephone inquiry of 684
inhabitants of Yerevan. According to the survey, 9% of respondents
believe that the Mayor should be appointed by the President or the
Prime Minister and 2% believe that he should be elected by the Council
of Elders of Yerevan. 3% of respondents found it difficult to respond

Georgian army to be supplied with food produce from ethnic Armenian districts

TBILISI
The Ministry of Defence is launching a programme for purchasing
agricultural produce for the Georgian armed forces in
Samtskhe-Javakheti. [President Mikheil Saakashvili announced on 10
July that the army should be supplied exclusively with agricultural
produce from largely ethnic Armenian districts of Samtskhe-Javakheti
to make up for the loss of customers from the 62nd Russian military
base being withdrawn from Georgia]
The Defence Ministry press and public relations department has told
Kavkasia-Press that delivery points will be opened at the district
administration buildings in [mainly ethnic Armenian] Akhalkalaki and
Ninotsminda on 10 August.
These points will also collect information on the availability and
price of agricultural produce, as well as the frequency of delivery.
A working group from the Defence Ministry’s procurement department has
arrived in Samtskhe-Javakheti and will study the situation in the
course of this week.
Defence Minister Irakli Okruashvili and the leadership of the General
Staff, too, intend to arrive there.

New railway to link Turkey , Georgia , and Azerbaijan

ANKARA – As thanks for the Azeri government’s support for ending the
embargo against the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), it was
announced yesterday that Turkey would establish a long-awaited
railroad link between the two countries, a crucial part of the ancient
“silk road” between Europe and Asia.
The transport ministers of Turkey , Azerbaijan and Georgia will meet
this week in Istanbul to discuss the establishment of the Kars (
Turkey )-Akhalkalaki (Georgia)- Baku ( Azerbaijan ) railway line.
The railway was agreed on during a meeting in May between the three
countries’ presidents at the Baku-Tiblisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline’s
opening ceremony.
The railway is interpreted by the Armenians as an economic blow dealt
by the Turkish side. Armenians want to open a Kars-Gymri ( Armenia )
railway to help make Armenia a railroad transit country between the
East and West. The Armenian lobby in the U.S. has pressed Turkey to
open the railroad. The latest move by the Armenian lobby culminated in
a draft bill submitted to U.S. Congress by Congressmen Joe
Knollenberg, Frank Pallone and George Radanovich, all members of
Congress’ Armenian caucus, calling on the U.S. government to press
Ankara to open a Kars-Gymri railway.
The Kars-Akhalkalaki line, which will link with the already existent
Akhalkalaki-Baku, will be 98 km, 68 of which will pass through Turkish
territories and the remaining 30 km through Georgia . The cost of the
project is expected to be nearly $500 million. The railway is expected
to be in operation by 2008.

Statistics committee posts CIS first-half industrial output figures

MOSCOW
The highest growth in industrial output among the CIS countries in the
first half of 2005 by comparison with the same period in 2004 was
recorded in Azerbaijan where it was 20.1 per cent. This information
was made available today by the CIS Interstate Statistics Committee.
Industrial output went up 12.8 per cent in Georgia on the first-half
figure for 2004, 10.5 per cent in Belarus, 8.9 per cent in Tajikistan,
7.0 per cent in Kazakhstan, 5.3 per cent in Armenia, 5.0 per cent in
Ukraine and 4.6 per cent in Moldova.
In Russia industrial output went up 4.0 per cent year-on-year in the
first six months.
Industrial output declined by 9.8 per cent in Kyrgyzstan. The CIS
statistics committee has no figures for Turkmenistan or Uzbekistan.
Average industrial production growth for the CIS in the first half of
the year was 5.0 per cent (in the same period last year it was 9 per
cent). GDP also went up 5.0 per cent on average across the CIS in the
first six months.
GDP in the first six months went up 16.5 per cent in Azerbaijan, 10.2
per cent in Armenia, 8.9 per cent in Belarus, 8.1 per cent in
Tajikistan, 6.8 per cent in Georgia, 4.0 per cent in Ukraine and 2.4
per cent in Kyrgyzstan.
Goods and services for the basic types of economic activity showed a
5.1-per-cent rise in Russia in the first half of the year.

TRIAL OF TURKISH SCHOLAR POSTPONED TILL AUGUST 12

Turkyilmaz, indicted in smuggling, is postponed till August 12. The
time is provided to the new advocate to get familiar with the case
materials. It should be reminded that passenger of Yerevan-Istanbul
flight, Turkish citizen Yektan Turkyilmaz was taken into custody at
Zvartnots Armenian airport. 88 books of 17-20 centuries were
discovered in his luggage and license was necessary to take 7 books
out of the country, while he did not have it. Yektan Turkyilmaz is
Istanbul resident and is a Duke University (North Carolina) Ph.D. His
«interest»toward the culture of Armenia is diverse. He tried to take
away medical books and literature, as well as books on history,
geography and the formation of traditional parties in Armenia. In case
of being recognized guilty, the Turkish scholar will face 4-8 years of
imprisonment. The trial started today.
