ARMENIAN BOY KILLED IN TEHRAN

TEHRAN, SEPTEMBER 12, ARMENPRESS: Police in Tehran have opened
investigation into a brutal murder of a 15 year-old Armenian boy,
who was killed by four ethnic Iranians on September 8 evening in
downtown Tehran.
The squabble between the Armenian boy, Miro Begijanian and Iranians
erupted when he was going back home from the official opening of
Armenian Sport Olympiad in Tehran, an annual event held by the local
Armenian community.
According to eyewitnesses, the Armenian boy returned bad language
from the four Iranians, but the latter stopped his car and attacked
him by batons beating him to death. The attackers were arrested by
police. Armenian members of Iran’s parliament visited the family of
the killed boy promising that the attackers would be punished.
The murder forced organizers of the Olympiad to end them before
schedule.

ARMENIAN PRIME MINISTER LEAVES FOR NEW YORK

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 12, ARMENPRESS: Armenian prime minister Andranik
Margarian left today for New York to participate in the 60-th session
of the UN General Assembly. The largest gathering of world leaders in
history begins on Sept. 14 with 191 U.N. member nations. The summit
is to map out new approaches to poverty, global security and human
rights in the 21st century.
Armenian prime minister will participate in a special session on
development the draft document of which sets timetables to halve
poverty for the poorest of the poor, provide elementary education
to all, cut maternal deaths and halve the spread of AIDS by 2015,
among others. Margarian will address the General Assembly session on
September 16. On the sidelines of the visit Armenian prime minister
is scheduled to have meetings with several UN high officials.
Margarian and his wife will also participate in a reception to be
given by US president George W. Bush. He will come back to Armenia
on September 18.

GORIS TO HOST SECOND “SYUNIK PRODEXPO 2005”

GORIS, SEPTEMBER 12, ARMENPRESS: Goris Business Support Center (BSC)
NGO has announced the second regional ProdExpo in Syunik Province. It
said the aim of the event is to introduce local producers’ products
and services to locals and the international community. The expo will
be hold in the southern Armenian town of Goris, on September 24, 2005.
Over fifty regional Armenian companies will present such products as
cheese, juices and soft drinks, construction materials, meat and fish
products, jewellery, and IT. Local and International organizations,
governmental institutions, banks and donor organization have confirmed
their participation in this exhibition. The overall program also
includes traditional Armenian dancing, singing, food tasting, artwork,
and carpet weaving. Handicrafts (their creation and presentation)
will also be shown.
These handicrafts will be made of stone, wood, and local ceramics.
People will sell home-made products- yogurt (matsoon), honey, nuts
and walnuts, vegetables, fruits, dried fruits, baked goods, lavash,
home-made jams and jellies, sweet soodjookh, herbal teas (including
rose-hip and thyme), and all the other products that a typical Armenian
household usually prepares for its members. Artisans will present
their work, and visitors may try their hand at replicating this art.
Armenian restaurants and cafes will organize an area for a one-day
operation of their businesses. The information desk will provide
information about the town’s museums, as well as explain possible
tours and visits in the area. Visitors will have an opportunity to
visit the Old Town, the Goris Archeological and Artists’ museums.

YEREVAN CELEBRATING 2787-TH BIRTHDAY

will be organized in the Armenian capital city September 8-9, Deputy
Mayor of Yerevan Arman Sahakian noted. The events will start with a
solemn sitting in the Opera and Ballet Theater. The holiday will end
in a firework. To note, Erebuni-Yerevan holiday was for the first
time was celebrated in 1968.

BEIRUT: In a three-day conference entitled “The Armenians of Lebanon:
Their Past and Present,” a number of experts from various countries
gathered yesterday at Haigazian University to discuss aspects of the
current status of an influential yet minority group in the country.
Starting on Monday, 16 papers will be presented by scholars coming from
Canada, the U.S., France, Argentina, Egypt, Syria, Armenia, Germany,
Italy and of course, Lebanon in the presence of a number of invitees
from the academic community in Lebanon, both Armenian and non-Armenian.
In his welcome speech, Dr. Paul Haidostian, the president of Haigazian
University, said: “It was recognized that despite the undisputedly
important role that the Armenian community plays both within Lebanon
and the rest of the Diaspora, its history, culture and other aspects of
its community life have not been studied adequately to date according
to internationally accepted scientific standards.”
Among the topics that will be covered during the conferences will be
the political, socio-economic history of the community within both
the Lebanese and pan-Armenian contexts, the aspects of the influx
and exodus of Armenians to and from Lebanon, the Armenian identity,
literature, music, and contemporary concerns of the community.
A doctor in Human Geography, Aida Boudjikanian, the opening session’s
keynote speaker, held a lecture showing the different roles and
functions that Lebanon has held for Armenians spanning four centuries.
“The significance lies not only in their variety but in their
length and continuity or succession in time. In the 19th century,”
Boudjikanian said. “For Lebanese Armenians, Lebanon will always
represent, in my opinion, the country of consensual co-existence,
a social and political model,” she said, explaining that “all the
leaders, civil and religious, commonly share the advocacy for the
success of this experience and the success of the State of Lebanon.”
“For the Armenian Diaspora, Lebanon represents a land of reference and
history, a land of cultural heritage. Every summer, groups of young
Armenians coming back from around the world gather in Lebanon to delve
back into their culture, to learn and practice their ancestral language
and visit the country,” Boudjikanian said. The last statistics in
Lebanon date back to 1975 and place the community at 186,000 Armenians
in Lebanon, according to Boudjikanian, who gathered the data.

UN CELEBRATES ITS 60TH ANNIVERSARY

The representatives of 50 countries worked out the regulation of the
UN at the first Congress of the United Nations in San Francisco,
1945. It was signed on July 26, 1945 but they consider that the
organization officially started its activities on October 24 of the
same year. The organization celebrates its 60th anniversary this
year. A number of arrangements are envisaged to take place within
the framework of this celebration. The presentation of “We and Our
History” song opened the festive arrangements.
Consuelo Vidal, UN Resident Coordinator, represented the series of
arrangements and stated that the song performed by 26 Armenian singers
fully reflected the ideas and the values of the organization.
A big open-air concert will take place on September 17,
while on September 24 a big chess competition will be held in
Cascade. Well-known Armenian chess players as well as children
from 17 cities of our republic will participate in the open-air
competition. Smbat Lputian, outstanding Armenian chess player, believes
that the competition organized by the Armenian Chess Federation and
the Chess Academy will be a genuine chess feast. The arrangements also
include the competition of schoolchildren’s literary compositions on
the topic “The UN in the World and in My Life.” An exhibition of young
photographers will open on the very birthday of the organization,
on October 24. The concert of classical music at Aram Khachatrian
Concert Hall will complete the day.
Ms. Vidal said that the UN Summit dedicated to Millennium Development
Aims project will be held in New York soon. She said that the Armenian
delegation will also represent its report at the New York summit.
This year is important for the organization for another reason,
too. The fifth anniversary of the Millennium memorandum is celebrated
in 2005, as well. It’s worth reminding that the abovementioned
memorandum was signed in 2000 by 191 countries of the world that
committed to achieve the 8 aims of the millennium development until
2015. The millennium goals are as follows: struggle against diseases
and children’s death, assistance to the victims of natural disasters,
poverty overcoming, stability of environment and maintaining education,
as well as cooperation between the countries of the world.

of Goris. Organized by Business Support Center, administration
of Syunik province, Goris municipality and DAI-Armenia Project
for small and average business development, this exhibition will
host 50 companies that will represent processing and production of

production of jewelry and informational technologies.

THE SKATING-RINK OF SPORT AND CONCERT COMPLEX FIRST TO BE RESTORED

President of BAMO Promises Investments of $9-10 Million
The new owner of Yerevan Sport and Concert Complex after Karen
Demirtchian, president of Moscow-based construction group BAMO Murad
Muradian met with journalists at the Armenpress media hall last
week. He firstly represented the activities of the company in Russia,
informing that BAMO is one of the most famous construction companies
in Russia which employs 2500 people.
Muradian said that the company has recently built 2 big sport
complexes in Moscow region. The president of BAMO group applied to
the President of Armenia offering $5 million to buy the Sport and
Concert Complex. The final price of the deal was $5.7 million.
Muradian said that he has set a commission of exports to study the
Complex in three years’ time and settle on the size of investments. He
promised to inform about the process of reconstruction once in 3-6
months. He also said another term of the agreement requires that the
name of the complex be not changed.
One of the first goals is to reconstruct the skating-rink to hold
winter sports all-the-year-round. The company also looks to cultural
arrangements.
“Yerevan should become a city of festivals”, Murad Muradian
underscored.
The company will invest $9-10 million under the deal. No restaurants
or hotels will spring up in the territory of the Complex nor will
the green areas reduce.
One of the founders of BAMO group, Hovik Muradian, rebuffed the rumors
that the wife of Moscow mayor is a shareholder of the company. Murad
Muradian pointed out that the family of the Muradians is the all-out
owner of BAMO group.

RUSSIA LAYS NO CLAIMS TO MONOPOLY IN DIALOGUE WITH EU

YEREVAN, September 12. /ARKA-RIA “Novosty”/. Russia does not lay
claims to monopoly in the CIS in the dialogue with the European Union,
Russian Permanent Representative to EU Vladimir Chizhov said.
“Russia’s official position is: we do not lay claims to monopoly of
the post-Soviet state. We are ready to develop a dialogue with the
EU, the more so that a number of the CIS countries aim at integration
into the EU,” Chizhov said in his interview to Nezavisimaya Gazeta.
“We are also ready to discuss prospects of cooperation with the CIS
structures, first of economic cooperation. This is Common European
Space and EurAsEc,” Chizhov said.
He pointed out that when the European Economic Space was formed “there
were natural question about how it was connected with our work with
the EU, and we provided comprehensive answers to those questions.”
As regards the Nagorno-Karabakh, Transdniestrian and other conflicts,
he said that the EU is interested in both discussing and assisting
in settling them. “We are ready to consider various political and
material proposals,” he said.
Chizhov said that each of the conflicts has its own format of
negotiations. In the case of Nagorny Karabakh it is the OSCE Minsk
Group. “These formats may not be perfect, but they are optimal and
acceptable for all the conflicting parties. If the EU wants and
can contribute to progress, we only welcome this. This position
is incorporated in a joint statement of the RF and EU adopted at
the Rome Summit in 2003,” Chizhov said. Speaking of the domestic
political situation in the CIS he stated that “each side is free to
state its opinion.”
“Any joint actions of Russia and EU to influence the political
situation in a country are out of the question. This concerns both
Belarus and other countries. As regards our assessments of colored
revolutions, we can make them as part of the RF-EU dialogue and on

INTERNATIONAL CRISIS GROUP DECLARES ABOUT ABSENCE OF FACTS OF MASS SETTLING OF NAGORNO KARABAKH

YEREVAN, September 12. /ARKA/. The International Crisis Group
declares about absence of facts of mass settling of Nagorno Karabakh,
Vice -President of International Crisis Group Alain Deletroz told a
press-conference in Yerevan. He reported that position of the Group
in this issue is close to approaches and results of fact finding
mission of the OSCE. “There are no mass settling of these regions
by Armenians, but there are separate cases of settling in Lachin,
and in a lesser degree in Kelbajar and Aghdam”, he said. He also said
that the Group sent an appeal to the NKR authorities to prevent new
