Witness tells of Kalonzo, Arturs encounter
MP met the two people by chance, Kiruki commission told
By MAXWELL MASAVA & EMMANUEL ONYANGO
A MEETING between former Cabinet minister Kalonzo Musyoka and the two
deported Artur brothers was accidental, a commission inquiring into
their presence and activities in the country was told yesterday.
Rajendra Ratilal Sanghani commonly referred to as Raju Sanghani told
the commission yesterday that the Arturs, together with a third
person identified as Zakir Omar, met Musyoka by chance while on a
visit to Serena Hotel sometimes in November 2005.
Sanghani, the third witness to testify before the commission narrated
how he came to know the two brothers claiming that he met them in
Nairobi on November 10, 2005, after they had jetted in alongside
Zakir to explore business opportunities.
`We met many people among them Kalonzo to whom I introduced Zakir and
his group. At that time when they realized that he was a former
Minister of Foreign Affairs, they wanted to seek his opinion on some
investments they wanted to make in other neighbouring countries and
Congo. Since Hon Musyoka was busy at that time, he said he was going
to be in Grand Regency Hotel that evening for a different meeting. He
said he would spare them some moments there,’ he said while
exonerating Kalonzo on allegations of a planned meeting.
He also said the photograph session between the group and Mwingi
North MP was taken in good faith and he never thought the same could
be used for political reasons.
He told the commission that it was through Zakir that he came to know
Arturs as investors and members of Royal Families back in Armenia.
Zakir introduced Sargasyan and Margaryan as Mr Arthur and James
respectively, Sanghani told the commission.
Sanghani told the commission being headed by Shedrack Kiruki that he
also introduced the two brothers to many of his friends as Arthur and
James.
He told the commission that he had met his old acquittance, Zakir,
while on a trip in Mumbai, India, in May 2005 where they discussed
business opportunities in Kenya.
In his testimony, he said Zakir called later in October of the same
year expressing interest to invest in Kenyan market and arrived in
the country later in the same month accompanied by two other people
who turned out to be the Arturs.
While being guided by his lawyer, Mr Ladji, Sanghani told the
commission that he had all along believed that the Arturs were
genuine investors until March, this year, when their activities
started coming under intense scrutiny by the media.
He said the housing business alone would have seen him earn Sh300
million in profit had the two brothers not been deported.
He denied having invited the two brothers to the country but admitted
to having sent his emissaries to receive them at Jomo Kenyatta
International Airport on the day they arrived in the country.
He also admitted to having booked them at Grand Regency Hotel on
their first visit and later renting them the palatial house in
upmarket Runda Estate when they returned last year to execute their
investments.
Kalonzo was adversely mentioned by the two brothers during their
controversial stay in the country.
Alongside Langata MP Raila Odinga, Kalonzo was claimed to have
visited the two with the aim of accessing funds to topple the
Government.
The MPs denied the claims, saying the two were mercenaries hired by
the State to taint their names.
Has Noah’s Ark Been Found?
Has Noah’s Ark Been Found?
Christian Archaeology Team Believes It Has Found the Ark
June 29, 2006 – – A team of Texas archaeologists believe they may have
located the remains of Noah’s Ark in Iran’s Elburz mountain range.
“I can’t imagine what it could be if it is not the Ark,” said Arch
Bonnema of the Bible Archaeology Search and Exploration (B.A.S.E)
Institute, a Christian archeology organization dedicated to looking
for biblical artifacts.
Bonnema and the other B.A.S.E. Institute members hiked for seven hours
in the mountains northwest of Tehran, climbing 13,000 feet before
making the apparent discovery.
“We got up to this object, nestled in the side of a hill,” said Robert
Cornuke, a member of the B.A.S.E. Institute. “We found something that
has my heart skipping a beat.”
At first, they didn’t dare to hope it was the biblical boat.
“It wasn’t impressive at first,” Cornuke said. “Certainly didn’t think
it to be Noah’s Ark. But when we got close, we were amazed. It looked
similar to wood.”
In addition, some B.A.SE. members say, their discovery didn’t look
very distinctive.
“It looked like the deck of any boat today,” Bonnema said.
Long Search for the Ark The Bible places the Ark in the mountains of
Ararat, a mountain range theologians believe spans hundreds of miles,
which the team says is consistent with their find in Iran.
The Bible also describes the Ark’s dimensions as being 300 cubits by
50 cubits — about the size of a small aircraft carrier. The
B.A.S.E. Institute’s discovery is similar in size and scale.
“It is provocative to think that this could be the lost ark of Noah,”
Cornuke said Throughout history, people have been searching for the
Ark to help prove God’s existence.
“There’s this idea, if we can prove that the ark existed then we can
prove that the story existed, and more importantly, we can prove that
God existed,” said Bruce Feiler, author of “Where God Was Born.”
Previous scholars have searched for the Ark on Mount Ararat in Turkey.
“Czar Nicholas, actually, in 1916 sent two expeditions to photograph
it on top of Mount Ararat,” said Feiler.
One former U.S. president, Feiler said, looked for it in the mountains
of Iran.
“There is a story that Jimmy Carter, on his way to visit the Shah of
Iran in 1977, purposefully flew over it,” he said.
As recently as March, researcher claimed to have satellite photos that
proved the presence of Ark remains. The B.A.S.E institute hopes the
physical evidence they’ve brought back from Iran will hold the answer
to this enduring mystery.
“People will always be looking for it, always be skeptical, always be
excited of the search,” Cornuke said. “But I think we found something
here that’s very notable.”
The B.A.S.E. Institute’s samples are being examined at labs in Texas
and Florida. B.A.S.E officials concede that there would be no way to
conclusively prove that their finding is actually Noah’s Ark.
So the hunt goes on. The biggest hurdle in identifying Noah’s Ark
comes down to “gopher wood.” The Bible says the Ark was made of gopher
wood but no one knows what it is.

Charles Peguy (1873-1914), French author: “Out of ignorance and a sense of duty most decent people are liable to turn into criminals.”
Why should I be surprised when I hear a so-called self-assessed patriotic Armenian voice the opinions of a skinhead with the brains of a sardine and the voracious energy of a hungry shark?
*
When hit-and-run critics hit, they invariably hit below the belt.
*
To write a good sentence sometimes it is necessary to reject a dozen or more versions of it. Likewise, to subscribe to a good idea sometimes it is necessary to reject a few of them, beginning with the ones that were foisted on us when we could not yet think for ourselves.
*
It is not only politics that makes strange bedfellows. Both Marxist and Catholic thinkers agree on their rejection of charity as a way to solve social problems. According to Jacques Maritain, one of the most respected Catholic philosophers of the 20th Century, “Charity is no substitute for justice withheld”; and according to Lenin, charity, by masking the contradictions of an unjust system, succeeds only in postponing the coming revolution.
*
Speaking of skinheads and dupes: consider the unspeakable crimes committed in the name of Marx and the number of dupes or “useful idiots,” among them some of the most eminent thinkers of the West, who produced a vast amount of pro-Stalin verbiage worthy of skinheads.

***************************************
Whenever I underestimate a fellow Armenian, I am seldom disappointed.
*
Mine is a lose/lose situation. I am fighting our leaders and their dupes. It’s an uneven fight — not just two against one but a thousand against one. My only allies are the alienated and the assimilated most of whom no longer even care to identify themselves as Armenians because they have seen the light and consider themselves born-again human beings.
*
Are the alienated a minority or a majority? That’s not a subject we like to discuss because the answer may reflect badly on us. When odars dislike us we can always dismiss them as pro-Turkish, which in our context might as well mean the lowest form of animal life. But how do we explain the alienated who may well be in the majority?
*
What’s uppermost in the mind of the average Armenian? If we assume our press to be a reliable index, the answer is the Genocide and its recognition. Speaking for myself (and I don’t pretend to be a typical case) may I say that I am fed up with all the incessant talk of Turks and massacres, which so far have succeeded only in reinforcing our image as perennial losers and victims.
*
One does not have to be a mind reader to know that what’s uppermost in the mind of the unemployed is finding a job. What’s uppermost in the mind of an Armenian who works in an alien environment is to return home and be with his family and friends. What’s uppermost in the minds of the old and the sick is proper medical care and living conditions. What’s uppermost in the mind of a student is to graduate and not to be forced into emigration. What’s uppermost in a young woman’s mind is not to be forced into prostitution in Saudi Arabia or babysitting in Bulgaria.
*
These are not concerns that are addressed by our self-appointed pundits who prefer to ascribe all our problems on Turks and to pretend we have no other concerns than their failure to recognition the Genocide.

Fans Soaked It Up: System Of A Down’s Rexall Place Show Won’t Be For
FANS SOAKED IT UP: SYSTEM OF A DOWN’S REXALL PLACE SHOW WON’T BE FORGOTTEN
By Yuri Wuensch
Edmonton Sun, Canada
June 29 2006
System of a Down is a lot like the untouchable hot girl you knew in
high school who surrounded herself with ugly chicks so she’d appear
that much hotter.
Opening band, Bad Acid Trip, like wake-up-in-the-desert-naked bad,
is one of those tagalongs. It makes you realize and appreciate that
System’s brand of heavy metal can indeed rise above, high above,
mere furious play and unintelligible screaming.
System of a Down played a stellar, ear-splitting and sold-out show
at Rexall Place last night.
I know Hatebreed, second on the bill, was a better act than BAT,
because a Thunderdome-like circle of metallists started beating down
on each other on the concert floor. Let’s face it; you don’t try
hurting people for just any old band.
And make no mistake, System of a Down is no ordinary metal band. Why
they’re so special might not become readily apparent after seeing
last night’s show at Rexall, however.
The band’s lyrics touch on everything from over-population in the
U.S. prison system to SOAD’s roots and the genocide of Armenians
during the First World War. System has instilled thought-provoking
ideas and politics into its music and, in turn, fan base.
That the band delivers its message with the brute force of a thousand
hammers is a plus, with power chords, merciless drumming and lead
singer Serj Tankian’s punctuating vocals.
The instrumentals on many tracks also showed real nuance, like on
B.Y.O.B. (Bring Your Own Bombs). Last night, “bring your own bong”
would have been appropriate, too; the smell of weed was thick most
everywhere in Rexall. Sorry, security.
Not that the band discouraged the puff, puff, give.
At one point, a red shirt was thrown on stage, right into the arms
of guitarist Daron Malakian.
“Ew, sticky,” he said. “Come on. If you’re going to throw anything,
at least throw a joint.”
A barrage of items hit the stage, including to the band’s confusion, an
eraser. But a bevy of blunts eventually found their way up there, too.
“Ha. I’m such a fiend, I’m grabbing them all,” laughed Malakian, who
passed a lit one around to his band mates. “Now that we’re stoned,
we’re probably going to screw this next one up.”
There were few missteps, though. As the evening wore on, the band’s
musicianship shone through, with some tunes sounding like Eastern
European drinking songs.
Others took on a Middle Eastern vibe, complemented by Malakian’s chants
and the Persian rugs on the stage floor. Some of the polyrhythmic
instrumentals were just plain dizzying, fit for gypsies and whirling
dervishes.
The band apologized for its play of Old School Hollywood Baseball, the
first time it’s been performed live, they said. But it was cool, the
vocorder effect adding yet another spellbinding dimension to their act.
Needles, from System’s 2001 breakthrough album, Toxicity, like
most everything the band performed, was well met by the crowd. The
mop-topped teen beside me, eyes closed and thrusting his fist in the
air, wasn’t at a rock concert – he was at church.
If your banger buddy doesn’t acknowledge your water-cooler greeting
this morning, don’t think him rude.
He’s probably just temporarily deaf – and loving it – thanks to
System of a Down. Soak it in; the band’s on an extended hiatus after
this tour.

LA: Council Wants Mailer Investigated
COUNCIL WANTS MAILER INVESTIGATED
By Eugene Tong, Staff Writer
Los Angeles Daily News, CA
June 29 2006
GLENDALE – City officials are asking state Attorney General Bill
Lockyer to investigate a negative campaign mailer in the 43rd Assembly
District race that offended members of the local Armenian community.
The City Council unanimously approved a resolution Tuesday night
requesting a state investigation but stopped short of holding its
own inquiry.
“Unless something dramatically changes, we would be going on a fishing
expedition,” Councilman Ara Najarian said.
Councilman Frank Quintero, who lost to Burbank school board member Paul
Krekorian in the June 6 Democratic primary, has denied any connection
to the mailer, which was financed by an independent committee, the
Oakland-based California Latino Leadership Fund. A report in Capitol
Weekly, a political publication, traced the group’s financing to the
state Latino Caucus in Sacramento.
At Tuesday’s council meeting, Quintero pressed for an inquiry that
could clear his name.
“I will either make the motion or second that motion,” he said. “I’ve
condemned the mailer when it first came out, and I’ve followed up
with a letter to the attorney general and the secretary of state. …
We absolutely had no idea that was taking place.”
The mailer attempted to link Quintero’s Armenian-American opponent
to terrorism by way of the Armenian National Committee of America,
which endorsed Krekorian. A former ANC leader no longer tied to the
advocacy group was convicted in 2001 of possessing stolen explosives
and assault weapons.
“It’s easy to deplore these acts,” said Zanku Armenian, an
ANC Western Region representative. “But it’s important to have
accountability. … We the citizens of Glendale are waiting for real
answers, but we can’t wait forever.”
The flap damaged Quintero’s standing with the Armenian-American
community, in which he had cultivated political ties for decades.
Councilman Bob Yousefian, a member of the council’s Armenian-American
majority and a Krekorian supporter, still faults Quintero for the
mailer.
“It came out on a Friday night,” he said. “On Friday night and
Saturday, not once did Mr. Quintero come out and say he had nothing
to do with it. If it was me, I would’ve been on TV Friday. … Maybe
the attorney general can get to the bottom of this.”
Some speakers at the meeting, including several Armenian-Americans,
flocked to Quintero’s defense.
“I do not believe whatsoever the mailer would’ve come from his office,”
Glendale resident Aram Kazazian said. “This is a mailer that came
without his knowledge.”
Resident Larry Cole said Quintero has no reason to apologize. “Since
when does somebody who has no culpability take responsibility
anyway?” he said.
Laurie Collins, president of the Glendale Democratic Club, asked the
community to withhold judgment and not to pit the Armenian community
against local Latinos.
“Two wrongs don’t make a right,” she said. “This issue is very
important, and it’s a cloud on our election process.”

Azerbaijan are set up in accordance with NATO standards, our country
launched for training of professional personnel in accordance with
modern requirements. Furthermore, Azerbaijan’s military budget grows
per annum, resulting in reinforcement of our military’s social
protection”. Minister of Defence of Azerbaijan, General-Colonel,
Safar Abiyev, said it at the ceremony devoted to 88th Anniversary
of the Armed Forces of Azerbaijan. According to S. Abiyev, the
above-mentioned factors resulted in strengthening of work aimed at
increasing of the military’s social protection. “Our armed forces
widen international relations. To date we signed the agreement on
military-technical cooperation with such countries as Iran, Turkey,
the U.S., Russia, Pakistan, Bulgaria, Germany, etc.
Azerbaijani military participate the hundreds of annual arrangements
conducted by the NATO within the framework of the Partnership for Peace
Programme. Our Army is strong and won’t concede Azerbaijani lands.”
S. Abiyev informed that Azerbaijan’s Armed Forces are ready to return
the Azerbaijani territories occupied by Armenia by military way.
According to him, in order to wage a war, it takes just a time.
Furthermore, the Minister emphasized that this conflict infringes
on Armenian interests as well as many other countries. In spite
of that S. Abiyev did not call specific states, but he stated that
some of them were interested in direct influence upon Azerbaijan:
“Some major states uphold their views, but they will be forced to go
back before the power of Azerbaijan. We can show our power.”
S. Abiyev expressed his attitude towards statement of Armenian Defence
Minister Serge Sarkisian who informed that Azerbaijan did not intend
to wage a war. “Let Sarkisian says what he wants. With his words he
is trying to soothe Armenian community and appease a fear of opinions
due to forthcoming war.”

EU prefers not to interest with conflicts Recently the Public
Unity of Civilization & Research held the ’round table’ entitled
European security strategy and Azerbaijan. Chairman of the mentioned
organization, Surkhay Latifov informed that the East- the East Project
being realized within the framework of the Open Society Institute
Programme will last three months. Within the framework of the programme
the various arrangements and ’round tables’ were held in Baku, Guba,
etc. regions of Azerbaijan.
According to him, the Project I is due to particularly the European
neighborhood policy. It implies to inform about the European security
strategy.
Then the Director of the European Political Institute of Czech
Republic, Devid Kraal spoke and said that the European security
strategy under leadership of Havier Solona was set up in December
2003. D. Kraal said that this strategy has a great importance,
resulting in development of the common security strategy for Europe.
At the same time, the document made close the European Union
countries. The expert added that the Strategy protects the interests
of the Member States of the European Union as well as secure other
countries’ security. According to D. Kraal, the Strategy aims at fight
counterterrorism and weapons of mass destruction. The document also
recalls the regional conflicts subdivided into “cold” and “hot”.
For instance, the conflict between Israel and Palestine is called as
“hot”, but the conflicts existing in the Caucasus – “cold”, including
Abkhazia, Ossetia and Nagorno-Garabagh. As D. Kraal informed,
the Strategy implies the ways of solution of these problems: “Such
kind of conflicts can have a number of solutions. EU Member States
consider that all countries should make efforts for prevention of
such problems. Moreover, the conflicts are withdrawn very often in
the states with strong government.” As D. Kraal thinks, the majority
of EU Member States have not detailed information concerning the
Nagorno-Garabagh: “At the same time, EU prefers not to go into details
of such conflicts, as the more important issue is economic affairs.”
Regarding the opinion of the Director of the Institute concerning the
Nagorno-Garabagh conflict, he stated that he did not know this problem
in detailed, that’s why he was not ready to express his opinion on
this occasion.

Our MPs told Members of PACE about deliberate cases of burning of
the occupied territories of Azerbaijan by Armenia Yesterday the
plenary summer session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council
of Europe continued in Strasbourg. In first day of session the report
on Azerbaijan prepared by the rapporteurs of the PACE Monitoring
Committee, Andreas Gross and Anders Herkel was presented to the
members of PACE. After discussion, the majority MPs adopted regular
Resolution on Azerbaijan, considering a number of recommendations
aimed at improvement of democratic situation in our country. As
in yesterday’s interview member of Azerbaijani delegation to PACE,
Gultekin Hajiyeva told, a great part of recommendations submitted
to the PACE January session (Resolution 1480) remained into force
and included to June Resolution 1505. G. Hajiyeva notes that the
Resolution recommends to review the Election Code, the changes of the
composition of the election commissions, provision of the citizens’
rights to the freedom of assembly, etc. Furthermore, the Resolution
calls Azerbaijan’s authorities to find and bring to account the
murders of the editor-in-chief of Monitor independent magazine,
Elmar Huseynov, who was killed in spring 2005.
“Council of Europe plans to cooperate with Azerbaijan in all
these points,” stressed G. Hajiyeva. During discussion the head of
Azerbaijani delegation to PACE, Samed Seyidov and member of delegation
Aydin Mirzazadeh spoke at a meeting.
As G. Hajiyeva notes, yesterday the rapporteurs of the PACE Monitoring
Committee for Azerbaijan proposed not to review the mandate of
Azerbaijani delegation to PACE. “This is already favorable version,”
emphasizes member of MM.
As G. Hajiyeva informs, already next year CE will address the matter
concerning commitments of our country before the CE and “we have to
do much to this moment”.
Yesterday pending discussion of the Resolution on Azerbaijan G.
Hajiyeva also told the PACE Members the burning of the occupied
territories of our country. The subject of occupied lands and ongoing
fires in these territories to date is the main focus of meetings and
negotiations conducted by Azerbaijani MPs in Strasbourg.
According to G. Hajiyeva, Monday morning the sessions of the political
groups also focused on this point. Today the meeting of the political
group of Conservative Party Members will focus on this point. The day
before the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of
Europe, Rene van der Linden received Azerbaijani delegation.
According to G. Hajiyeva, the PACE President was informed about the
facts of deliberate burning of the occupied territories of Azerbaijan
by the Armenian aggressors. “We are expecting a concrete reaction of
the PACE authorities to this point further,” notes G. Hajiyeva.
According to her, today they will meet with the authorities of the
PACE Committee for Environment & Natural Resources for discussing this
issue. Furthermore, currently the press-release devoted to burning
of our lands is being prepared. According to MP, the main purpose of
Azerbaijani delegation is to stop fires. “To date this issue remains
unsolved and fires are ongoing,” regrets MP.
G. Hajiyeva hopes that finally, PACE will exert some pressure upon
the official Yerevan, which allows the Ministry for Emergency to
enter the regions of inflammation in order to extinguish a fire
in occupied lands. “Azerbaijan made an appeal to appoint a special
rapporteur of the PACE for this point who could explore the cases
of deliberate burning of our lands by Armenians at places. CE should
soundly approach to this issue and assist to prevent a fire.”
MP notes that it is very important for us to bring this matter to
awareness of the European community, as Azerbaijan as well as Armenia
took commitments to solve the conflict by peaceful meanings, but the
fact of burning of occupied lands by Armenia says unwillingness of
the official Yerevan to use peaceful way.
PACE Sub-Committee for Nagorno-Garabagh conflict scheduled for this
Friday is expected to focus on the fires in occupied lands.
On Wednesday PACE Political Committee is expected to discuss the Pact
on Stability in the South Caucasus countries.
According to G. Hajiyeva, today Leo Platvoet, the rapporteur of the
PACE for missing people in the South Caucasus countries, a MP from
Netherlands will speak at the Committee for Migration, Refugees and
Population. He will tell about the results of his recent visit to
the region.

BAKU: Azeri Delegation To Attempt Putting NK Issue To The Agenda At
AZERI DELEGATION TO ATTEMPT PUTTING NK ISSUE TO THE AGENDA AT PACE SUMMER SESSION
Author: J.Shahverdiyev
TREND Information, Azerbaijan
June 29 2006
We will do our best to have Nagorno-Karabakh issue discussed at PACE
summer session that takes place July 3 to 7 in Brussels, reportedly
said MP Eldar Ibrahimov, deputy head of Azeri delegation to PACE
and chairman of permanent commission for agrarian policy with Milli
Medjlis.
Goran Lenmarker, PACE representative for Nagorno-Karabakh, is currently
drawing the report. “Regarding the report, Mr Lenmarker addressed the
parties to submit their proposals. Upon reviewing these proposals and
reaching agreement, the issue will be out to the day agenda. It is
still difficult to say whether this issue will be included or not”,
– Ibrahimov said.
The proposals conflict has arisen. “Armenians offer to establish
economic relations, open roads between Azerbaijan and Armenia and
only then discuss territorial integrity. We decisively said first
they shall leave occupied lands and only then we will talk of economic
relations”, – Ibrahimov added.
At the session, Azeri delegation is going to prepare a speech
“Ensuring security for people in OSCE region”. The theme will be
linked to Armenia’s occupation policy and Nagorno-Karabakh problem.
“We will say: if we cannot ensure security of citizens of states
within OSCE, Armenia goes on with its occupation policy on Azerbaijan
and over million of our compatriots left their homes, what security
can be talked of?”, – Ibrahimov said.
