Chess prodigy: ‘Jessie hated her father, but not enough to kill herself’
Friends of chess prodigy who fell to her death from a hotel window dismiss
suicide theory, despite rape allegations against her father

By Lauren Veevers
30 July 2006

Friends and coaches of Jessie Gilbert, the chess prodigy who plunged
to her death from an eighth-floor hotel window last week, spoke
yesterday of their shock at learning that her father is accused of
raping her.

Jessie, 19, was remembered at the Weald Chess Congress in Crawley,
where a minute’s silence was held before around 100 players from
across Sussex, Kent and Surrey – Jessie’s home county – began the
first round of the competition. Jessie was supposed to have been
playing in the top section of the tournament, and many here knew the
teenager and her family well.

It emerged yesterday that Jessie’s father, Ian Gilbert, a 48-year-old
City banker, had been charged with seven counts of rape and two
indecent assaults. Surrey police confirmed that Mr Gilbert was
awaiting trial at Guildford Crown Court on 21 August.

Members of Jessie’s chess club, Wood Green in Surrey, were
particularly saddened by claims that she had jumped from her hotel
window in the Czech Republic, where she was staying during an
international chess tournament. Early reports had suggested that her
death was the result of sleepwalking, which Jessie was known to suffer
from.

Chess players from Jessie’s area were largely unaware of the troubles
she had been facing in her home life, and were stunned by the
accusations against her father. Susan Lalic, 40, a grandmaster who
played against Jessie in a tournament last year, said:

“I don’t believe that it could have been suicide. Even if the claims
are true, there is no way it is something Jessie would do.

“She had her whole life before her. Jessie was a real fighter. She was
bubbly, clever and considerate. I don’t think she would have done this
to her family on purpose.”

Another friend, who did not wish to be named, said: “We all knew that
Jessie’s mum and dad had split up, but that was years ago. She didn’t
see her dad. She hated him. They moved recently because of him, but
she wouldn’t kill herself over it.”

Jessie, who came to prominence at the age of 11 when she won the
Women’s World Amateur Championship, the youngest player ever to do so,
was sharing the hotel room with her best friend Amisha Parmar, 14. It
is believed the girls had been drinking heavily on the night of
Jessie’s death.

Jessie’s mother, a research scientist, and her three sisters, were
heavily involved in the chess world, but it was Jessie who showed the
most talent from a young age. Jonathan Tuck, who had coached Jessie at
the world championships, said: “Jessie’s mum was keen for her to do
well. She encouraged her a lot. It is important for young players to
dedicate a lot of time and effort to it, and that is what I remember
about Jessie. She focused 100 per cent. Her concentration level was
exceptional – she would sit for hours taking in the board.”

Sue Maguire, whose son plays chess at Jessie’s club said: “Nobody
likes to speculate whether Jessie jumped or was sleepwalking. It is
just so sad that the chess world has lost such a bright spark.”

Jessie was known by friends to have self-harmed on several
occasions. One said: “I think she did cut herself from time to time,
but I don’t think it was a big problem for her.”

Jessie was in the middle of the tournament, which consisted of five
rounds, and was doing well. She was taking a gap year and had planned
to go to Oxford University to study medicine.

Jessie’s sleepwalking was often serious. One friend at yesterday’s
tournament said: “Jessie once told me that she had jumped out of a
first-floor window when she was sleepwalking. When she woke up she
told her mum that she had been trying to fly. I am 90 per cent sure
that is what happened.”

Her friend added that Jessie “phoned home a lot when she was away, as
she was very close to her mum and sisters”.

The pressure: A brutal, competitive world

The tragic case of Jessie Gilbert has shed new light on the world of
competitive chess, which, far from the genteel, intellectual pastime
many consider it, can often be brutal, exhausting and fiercely
competitive.

Just last month, at the Chess Olympiad in Turin, two grandmasters –
England’s Danny Gormally and Armenia’s Levon Aronian – took their
rivalry to a new level when Gormally, 30, reportedly punched Aronian
in the face. The dispute, thought to be sparked by rivalry over female
grandmaster Arianne Caoili, demonstrated the pressure-cooker
atmosphere of major chess tournaments.

Chess prodigies can run an increased risk of emotional or social
problems as they grow up, says Linda Blair, clinical psychologist at
the University of Bath. She said it was not their high spatial ability
that was the problem, but the way people, particularly parents,
responded to and focused on that ability. Too often, this resulted in
the best players being seen as eccentric or “loners”. JT

Yerevan and July 31 he will go to Baku.
This is the first visit of Bryza to Yerevan and Baku as new US

is very topical as it is impossible to resolve the Karabakh conflict
without restoring the trilateral negotiating format or establishing
direct talks between Nagorno-Karabakh and Azerbaijan. Ghoukassyan says
that everybody understands that NK cannot be part of Azerbaijan any
more and that any solution other than providing NK with de jure
independence is a sure way to war.-0-

BAKU: No US funding needed for regional railway – Azeri official

No US funding needed for regional railway – Azeri official

Olaylar, Baku
28 Jul 06

Excerpt from report by Azerbaijani independent newspaper Olaylar on 28
July headlined “The position of the US Congress” and subheaded “Abid
Sarifov: The construction of the Kars-Akhalkalaki-Tbilisi-Baku railway
will not be hindered”

The session of the Azerbaijani-Turkish joint intergovernment economic
commission has discussed the issue of energy supplies to Naxcivan
[Azerbaijani exclave]. The Azerbaijani side made its own proposals on
paying off its energy debt to Turkey, the co-chairman of the
commission and deputy prime minister, Abid Sarifov, has told
journalists.

[Sarifov] The president has issued an instruction to increase
commodity turnover between Turkey and Azerbaijan to 1bn dollars in two
years. This figure will increase to 700-750m dollars this
year. Moreover, the Turkish side has raised the issue of Naxcivan’s
energy debt. This is an issue that is always raised. Azerbaijan has
other proposals in this regard. We suggest paying off our debt with
energy in several years’ time. In connection with gas supplies to
Naxcivan, power stations will be reconstructed and we can pay off our
debt not with money, but with energy. We have made such a proposal and
will see if the Turkish side will accept it.

Moreover, the Turkish side has proposals regarding transport
issues. We have prepared 2,500-3,000 permits that will allow Turkish
vehicles to enter Azerbaijan free of charge. The Turkish side wants to
increase their number. This is a mutual issue and for the time being,
we want to delay the consideration of this issue for the time
being. We do not want to make hasty decisions. The issue will be
considered. On the other hand, Turk Petrollari wants to expand its
activities in Azerbaijan, and this is a matter of the future. It is
too early to talk about it yet.

[Correspondent] Did you discuss the construction of the
Kars-Akhalkalaki-Tbilisi-Baku railway?

[Sarifov] Of course. If we have signed some protocol, its discussion
is natural. The Kars-Akhalkalaki-Tbilisi-Baku railway is an important
issue for both countries. We do not raise it as a problem. The
president has issued an instruction and we are working on this
issue. The Turkish side has already drawn up and presented the
feasibility study of the project. The meeting of transport ministers
in Astana is negotiating on this issue. This issue is under the strict
control of the president. The governments of Azerbaijan and Turkey see
eye-to-eye on this issue and are absolutely confident that
construction work will begin next year.

[Correspondent] The US Congress has decided not to finance the
construction of the Kars-Akhalkalaki-Tbilisi-Baku railway and has
asked banks not allocate funds for the project. Can this factor
influence the implementation of the project?

[Sarifov] A great number of questions have been asked about this. The
president has a categorical opinion about this issue and everyone
agrees with it. We will not use US banks and there is no need for
that. The project can be implemented with the help of domestic and
other sources. This is a matter of the future and I see no problem
about this.

BAKU: Sergey Markedonov: Azerbaijan won’t be allowed to start war

Azeri Press Agency, Azerbaijan
July 28, 2006
Sergey Markedonov: Azerbaijan won’t be allowed to start war in Garabagh
[ 28 Jul. 2006 18:00 ]
The military operation in the Kodori valley is just a political PR
campaign launched by Mikhail Saakashvili, head of the International
Relations Department at the Institute of the Political and Military
Analysis Sergey Markedonov stated (APA).
In his words, neither Georgians nor Abkhazians control the territory
where the operations started. `This operation gives Georgians the
opportunity to hold talks with the `other state structure’ of
Abkhazia bypassing official Sukhumi. However, this territory is too
small to talk about it seriously,’ Markedonov said.
The political scientist underlined that Azerbaijan’s wish to follow
Georgia’s example and launch hostilities against Nagorno Garabagh is
just unsound. `The operation in Kodori is just a walk while incursion
into Garabagh is a lingering and bloody war Azerbaijan can lose.
Garabagh’s security zone is a deeply echeloned defence while the
Defence Army of Garabagh cannot be compared to a group of Georgian
`guerrillas’ led by Emzar Kvitsiani. The territory of Nagorno
Garabagh is really controlled what cannot be said about the Kodori
valley. There is one more nuance: late Heydar Aliyev has created an
image of a victim for Azerbaijan in the West. Now, if military
operations start in the Nagorno Garabagh conflict region this image
will immediately crack. Moreover, Europe, the U.S. and of course
Russia will be against Azerbaijan’s aggression. Thus, adding the
factor of the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline Azerbaijan will not
start war. It just won’t be allowed,’ Markedonov said./APA/

"Prodigal Son’s" Return

RPA make recruits among those who dismissed from the party after
`October 27′ .

Prime Minister Andranik Margarian answering journalists’ questions
after the RPA 10 th special congress said: `I had an opportunity to
make the number of party members to 100000 or 200000, but there were
25-27000. Now their number is 30000. We have always dismissed and
admitted new members.’ Perhaps the prime minister’s words are true but
he forgets to mention that persons who have been dismissed from the
party for different reasons are admitted into the party after Serge
Sargsian’s membership. Persons who had serious discrepancies with
Andranik Margarian and his adopted policy after «October 27».

Sasun Mikaelian, former «erkrapah», now member of «Vogu Pordzutiun»
initiating group, NA deputy is one of dismissed politicians in 2000
but now he recruits. Mr. Mikaelian didn’t hide that he had always been
attentive to the Republican Party and said that he had been an
independent deputy in the NA for four years but his attitude towards
the Republican had always been positive. Nowadays he has decided to
recruit `to carry out wide policy. As you know, I’m one of the
founders of the party and I have decided to return’. Sasun Mikaelian
was dismissed from the Republican in 2000, after `October 27′ when
Vazgen Sargsian’s brother Aram Sargsian was feeling the post of prime
minister for several months. After Aram Sargsian’s dismissal new
appointed Prime Minister Andranik Margarian had discrepancies with the
RPA `erkrapah’ bloc and a lot of members were dismissed or simple left
the party.

Sasun Mikaelian assured that he had no profits he simply wanted to
participate in the political fight inside his native party. «I am not
a new Republican, I have been the RPA regional president in Kotayk
region for 2,5 years. I think it is right to continue my political
activities inside Republican, I haven’t changed my party, and I don’t
see another stable political power than the Republican is».

Sasun Mikaelian has been elected by majority system as the NA deputy
for several times from Kotayk region, where Gagik Tsaroukian is the
patron. Our interlocutor said; «My decision has no connection with
Gagik Tsaroukian, and if I pursued selfish ends I might become another
party’s member».

To the question whether his decision is concerned with Serge
Sargsian’s membership, or where he decided to become the RPA member to
avoid of murder assaults, Sasun Mikaelian answered: «I’m not afraid of
murder assaults. I have never been afraid and won’t afraid of such
things. You know very well how I work, I have always expressed my
opinion irrespective of the fact who is in front of me».
