PRESS RELEASE
September 7, 2006
For Immediate Release
By popular demand, The Arts of Photography, Poetry, and Translation
exhibition returns to the Armenian Library and Museum of America’s
Terjenian-Thomas Gallery. It was first shown for two weeks in May.
The exhibition showcases Armenian women’s voices framed in images and
verse. Featured is photojournalist Armineh Johannes. Illustrating
the photography are selected poems from I Want to Live by Shushanik
Kurghinian, translated by Shushan Avagyan, and from the Other Voice:
Armenian Women’s Poetry Through the Ages, translated by Diana
Der-Hovanessian.
Dates: September 10 – October 8, 2006 during museum hours.
Special Program: Thursday, October 5, 2006, from 7:30 – 8:30 pm.
(video, poetry readings and discussion)
Armineh Johannes is an award-winning photojournalist whose
assignments and interests have taken her to Armenia for the last
seventeen years, and to some eastern and middle-eastern countries as
well. The majority of the photographs in this exhibition are from
her “Transitions” series where she tries to capture the elements in
these societies that may be in the process of disappearing. The
photos, rather than suggesting revolutions or upheavals of the overt
kind, evoke those internal question marks and hidden tumults that are
part of every woman’s and man’s life.
The poetry linked to the images varies. Kurghinian’s, from I Want to
Live volume, deals with social issues, feminism, and confrontation
with established values and oppressive norms. The poetry from the
“Other Voice” extends the spectrum considerably. Juxtaposition of the
photos with the selected poetry provides some unusual tensions.
Hopefully this exhibition will be a beginning exploration for the
viewer of how photography encapsulates thought, and how poetry
captures image content with a minimum of words.
To reinforce the fact that poetry can be accessible to all, a poetry
contest is an integral part of this exhibition. Three of
Kurghinian’s short poems are chosen to expose a lighter aspect of
this poet to the public. The Armenian comes with a rough, nearly
word-by-word translation into English. The best poetic or
literal/poetic translation of just one of three poems, as judged by
an academic jury of three, will receive a $100 (one hundred dollar)
award. Poems are available online on the publisher’s web site, AIWA
Press, For your convenience,
one poem is printed here:
Transliteration on the left, gives you the sound of the Armenian; the
rough translation to the right should be reworked by contestants.
Deadline for submission is October 1, 2006. Email to [email protected],
or mail to ALMA attention: Poetry Contest.

ON THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL
LET US CELEBRATE THE YEAR OF THE ARMENIAN SCHOOL
DECLARED THE PRELATE
On the morning of Wednesday, September 6, the schools of the Western
Prelacy commenced the 2006-2007 academic year with traditional
ceremonies including opening prayer and remarks by principals and
directors. Since 2006 was declared “The Year of the Armenian School”
by H.H. Aram I, Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia, the opening
ceremonies were marked with the Prelate’s message of “Let us celebrate
the year by highlighting the values of the Armenian school”.
On this occasion, H.E. Archbishop Moushegh Mardirossian, Prelate,
visited both the Encino and North Hills campuses of Ferrahian
School, while Prelacy Christian Education Department Co-Directors
Very Rev. Fr. Muron Aznikian and Fr. Barthev Gulumian visited Rose
and Alex Pilibos High School and Vahan and Anoush Chamlian School
respectively. Parish priests visited schools in their parishes where
they conveyed the Prelate’s message to the administrators, staff,
and students.
The Prelate began his opening remarks by thanking the Lord for a safe
return to the academic year following summer break. He stressed that
the start of each academic year offers us the opportunity to highlight
the role that education and the Armenian School play in our collective
lives, adding that this year a special emphasis is placed on that
role in response to the Pontifical declaration of 2006 as the Year
of the Armenian School. “I am pleased that many of our schools have
already planned events in honor of the Armenian School, however, it
is my wish that we collectively celebrate the Year of the Armenian
School. It is also my wish that each individual student recognize
the value of attending an Armenian school, to learn our language
and history, and to participate in the advancement of our culture,
because this is the mission of the Armenian school. I pray to God to
grant strength and patience to our principals, directors, teachers,
administrators, and parents, to enrich the spirit and minds of our
youth. Finally, I pray to Almighty God to keep a watchful eye over our
schools and to bless the endeavors of the Board of Regents, donors,
organizations, and committees who contribute to the unwavering mission
of the Armenian School with their continuous and invaluable support.”
The Prelate concluded by wishing success to the educators,
administrators, students, and parents during the academic year.

ACNIS Considers Prospects of Armenian Peacekeepers in Lebanon
Yerevan–The Armenian Center for National and International Studies
(ACNIS) today convened a foreign policy roundtable entitled “Armenian
Peacekeepers in Lebanon?: Pros and Cons” to discuss the viability,
against the backdrop of new geopolitical realities, of deploying an
Armenian peacekeeping contingent in Lebanon.
ACNIS director of research Stiopa Safarian greeted the audience
with opening remarks and deliberated on Armenia’s potential role in
the shaping of the Greater Middle East. “What occurs in the Middle
East today has certainly passed well beyond the perimeters of the
Arab-Israeli conflict, and involves new realities that are forming
in the region. The foreign policy of Armenia cannot treat the current
happenings with indifference. In the interests of European civilization
and security, in the spirit of peace, and as a sign of traditional
warm relations with the Arab world, this policy should play a unique
role in the strengthening of regional peace. Hence, a peacekeeping
mission to southern Lebanon, where thousands of Armenians live,
provides one such opportunity,” Safarian mentioned.
During his policy intervention, Yerevan State University lecturer
and former Ambassador Davit Hovhannisian examined developments
in the Middle East and Armenia’s position on them. What were the
consequences of the Israeli-Hezbollah confrontation? In Hovhannisian’s
view, the recent conflict weakened the US platform on this issue; it
allowed Iran the chance to temporarily divert the world’s attention
from its nuclear plans; Syria could not prove that this war was an
outcome of the withdrawal of its military units from Lebanon; and the
myth about the invincibility of the Israeli army and intelligence
disintegrated. “Given that we have a very large Armenian community
and a Catholicosate in Lebanon, Armenia cannot monitor the war there
without interest or concern,” Hovhannisian emphasized. He also added
that Armenia’s participation in the peacekeeping mission would bring
nothing but positive dividends to the country.
In his address, Armenia’s former Minister of Defense Lieutenant General
Vagharshak Harutiunian reflected on the military aspect in the possible
dispatch of Armenian peacekeepers to Lebanon. The general likewise is
confident that “Armenia must absolutely partake in the peace force,
but it has to determine the correct means of participation. This is
our duty since we have historically-profound and strong relations
with, and a huge Armenian community in, Lebanon.” Harutiunian also
noted that the presence of Armenian peacekeepers in that country is
in Israel’s interests as well because this would prevent the Israeli
towns from becoming targets of missile attacks from that area. In
General Harutiunian’s view, this mission is beneficial for the two
countries, for Hezbollah, and for the Armenian community of Lebanon.
In his assessment of the Arab-Israeli conflict, political
board secretary Edward Antinian of the Liberal Progressive Party
underlined Israel’s right to live peacefully and exist in its historic
homeland. Before sending troops to Lebanon, he said, it is imperative
to consider our interests and clarify our mandate. “In order not
to damage our country’s reputation in the end result, multilateral
discussions and debates as well as a general consensus are in order
prior to making such a responsible decision,” Antinian noted.
The participants in the ensuing discussion included director Alexander
Iskandarian of the Caucasus Media Institute; political analysts Tatul
Hakobian and Davit Petrosian; Egyptian charge d’affaires Abdelmohsen
Said Shafey; Ruzan Khachaturian of the People’s Party; Anahit Aghoyan
of the National Democratic Union Party; Gevorg Kalenchian of the
Heritage Party; lecturer Yevgeniy Ponomariov from the Moscow State
University of Economics, Computer Science and Statistics; professors
Haik Demoyan and Haik Kocharian of Yerevan State University; Armen
Aghayan from the “Defense of Liberated Territories” social initiative;
and several others. The absolute majority of expressed opinions
were in favor of sending Armenian peacekeepers to Lebanon, while the
continued absence of invited representatives from Armenia ‘s relevant
ministries bespoke the country’s official position on the matter.
Founded in 1994 by Armenia’s first Minister of Foreign Affairs Raffi K.
Hovannisian and supported by a global network of contributors, ACNIS
serves as a link between innovative scholarship and the public policy
challenges facing Armenia and the Armenian people in the post-Soviet
world. It also aspires to be a catalyst for creative, strategic
thinking and a wider understanding of the new global environment. In
2006, the Center focuses primarily on civic education, conflict
resolution, and applied research on critical domestic and foreign
policy issues for the state and the nation.

The Armenian genocide was officially recognized by a unanimous vote
of Parliament on August 17th, in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
This enthusing development was directly due to the diligent and
continuous endeavors of Sergio Nahabedian, one of the young leaders
of the Armenian Democratic Liberal Party in South America who is at
the same time a duly elected member of Parliament.
The following news report gives important details in this respect.
Buenos Aires Sovereign City Parliament Recognized Armenian Genocide
and Voted on Corresponding Law about Annual Commemoration
Armenian Genocide history will be taught in schools of Buenos Aires
every April 24.
On Thursday evening, August 17 the Legislative Assembly of Buenos Aires
Sovereign City unanimously passed a law according to which April 24th
will be honored as “Commemoration day of the first genocide of 20th
century where Armenian people were persecuted”.
This decision of Buenos Aires Sovereign City is based on Buenos
Aires Province law number 13.478, which as is known, was introduced
for discussion last June with the effort of director of “Sardarabad”
newspaper and district member of parliament Sergio Nahapetian.
The law envisions that every April 24th all schools of the city have
classes giving an overview of the Armenian Genocide issue.
The draft was presented in the city parliament by MP Gorge Sanmartino
who based his report on above mentioned provincial law. The law was
unanimously passed during a long parliamentary session.
During the August 17 session the following were present:
Republic of Armenia Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador
Vlatimir Karmirshalian, minister Mr. Khorhen Terterian and embassy
associate on cultural and media matters Mr. Ruben Mozeian, leader of
Argentine and Chile Archbishop Gisak Muradian, Rev. Eghishe Nazarian,
vice-president of Armenian Central Committee Dr. Alperto Cherechian,
AGBU vice-president Mr. Ricardo Halachian, Mr. Hayk Shahinian (ADLP),
Pedro Muradian (ARF), and Mrs. Tiana Ter-Karapetian (Tekeyan Cultural
Center).
After the adoption of the law Mr. Gorge Sanmartino thanked all the
members of parliament of the Sovereign City as well as Provincial
parliamentarian Sergio Nahapetian. He also greeted the presence of
ambassador of Republic of Armenia and the embassy staff, the Armenian
Primate and representatives of Armenian organizations.

A Shameful Act: The Armenian Genocide and the Question of
Turkish Responsibility Taner Akcam. Metropolitan, $30 (448p) ISBN
978-0-8050-7932-7
The story of the Ottoman Empire’s slaughter of one million Armenians
in 1915-a genocide still officially denied by the 83-year-old modern
Turkish state-has been dominated by two historiographical traditions.
One pictures an embattled empire, increasingly truncated by
rapacious Western powers and internal nationalist movements. The
other details the attempted eradication of an entire people, amid
persecutions of other minorities. Part of historian Akcam’s task
in this clear, well-researched work is to reconcile these mutually
exclusive narratives. He roots his history in an unsparing analysis of
Turkish responsibility for one of the most notorious atrocities of a
singularly violent century, in internal and international rivalries,
and an exclusionary system of religious (Muslim) and ethnic (Turkish)
superiority. With novel use of key Ottoman, European and American
sources, he reveals that the mass killing of Armenians was no byproduct
of WWI, as long claimed in Turkey, but a deliberate, centralized
program of state-sponsored extermination. As Turkey now petitions
to join the European Union, and ethnic cleansing and collective
punishment continues to threaten entire populations around the globe,
this groundbreaking and lucid account by a prominent Turkish scholar
speaks forcefully to all. (Oct.)

Five Pieces Of Advice For Serge Sargsyan

FIVE PIECES OF ADVICE FOR SERGE SARGSYAN
Lragir.am
11 Sept 06
Hrant Khachatryan, the leader of the Constitutional Right Union,
gave some advice to Serge Sargsyan, the chair of the Council of the
Republican Party, September 9 at the Azdak Club after Serge Sargsyan’s
statement two days before that he had not ordered to attack Hovanes
Galajyan, the editor of the Iravunk, the official newspaper of the
Constitutional Right Union, “because he does not fight against the
wretched.”
In answer, the leader of the Constitutional Right Union Hrant
Khachatryan gave five pieces of advice to Serge Sargsyan:
“Advice 1: relations with the society is not the same as relations
with a group of pageboys, hypocrites and bootlickers. For a person
with such big ambitions it is high time to realize this.
Advice 2: even if you are libeled in the media, it should be clearly
separated from facts that are evident and do not need to be proved,
otherwise calling everyone slanderer arouses dissatisfaction among
honest critics, and if this occurs again and again, it may grow
into personal enmity. Advice 3: when one describes publicly a known
person, one automatically reveals the system of values which one
represents. Describing Hovanes Galajyan as wretched is utterly against
our idea, the idea of the society, and I believe that some members of
your team did not like it either. Advice 4: in mental exercises about
the criminal you do not have to assume all the responsibility. We know
it is an unsatisfied ambition. For you, on the other hand, you should
beware the criminal, which is now taking an oath of faithfulness to
you. They have already cheated several others like you. Advice 5:
there is one case when you are really responsible for the criminal –
as the secretary of the Council of Security. And either you have to
fulfill this responsibility or you should deny it,” announced Hrant
Khachatryan.
He says after the attack on the journalist they doubted that Serge
Sargsyan had organized the attack. However, after Serge Sargsyan’s
reaction, Hrant Khachatryan says they think that their doubt is real.

Criminal – Anti-Criminal Watershed Should Be Enhanced

CRIMINAL – ANTI-CRIMINAL WATERSHED SHOULD BE ENHANCED
Lragir.am
11 Sept 06
The situation generated by the rule of the criminal in Armenia is
unprecedented, said Hrant Khachatryan, the leader of the Constitutional
Right Union. He mentioned that the quality of the government in Armenia
has always corresponded to the criminal, but currently the situation
is simply unprecedented. “This time, it is not only our evaluation
but also the evaluation of the ambassadors of the countries which
have always been loyal to the violations of our government, that the
situation is unprecedented,” stated Hrant Khachatryan.
He thinks that the government, which is supposed to keep down the
level of crime in the country not to threaten the national security,
is busy strengthening its power through the criminal, which directly
threatens the security of the nation.
“The country, where the level of crime is so high that it threatens the
national security, will simply collapse. Either these countries are
colonized by other countries, or their systems, including the system
of government are destroyed, and the country stops existing. And the
questions if there are no killings, in Germany, Europe or America
are for justifying their idleness or maybe also criminal activities,”
says the leader of the Constitutional Right Union. According to him,
the criminal – anti-criminal watershed, which is forming in the
consciousness of the public, perfectly corresponds to the present
state of the republic.
“We only have to establish this watershed to be able to organize this
unification on a higher level, in a larger sphere than our political
sphere. I mean the layers of the society, which have been bound to
their political parties in terms of orientation and were reluctant
to become engaged in the policy or did not want to become member of
affiliate to a political party, they must already join in forming
this watershed. They must share the problem that the relations of
the criminal and the anti-criminal will be made clear under the flag
of these elections. And in the middle of the next year it will become
clear if the country will be fully ruled by the criminal or conditions
will be created, nevertheless, to reduce the criminal below the level
that threatens the country’s security,” states Hrant Khachatryan.
He disagrees that publishing names is effective in an anti-criminal
campaign. “For people know the names of people who are engaged in
criminal activities better than we do. And facts are “denied” with two
words, “do you have the decision of the court that these people are
involved in criminal activities?” In other words, people know better
who is a plunderer, who is a strongman,” says Hrant Khachatryan. He
thinks organizational steps are more important than giving names.
The leader of the Constitutional Right Union underlines the involvement
of the public in the anti-criminal movement, saying that the activity
of the leaders of political forces is not a sufficient condition. “In
other words, the society should make up its mind whether it wants to
form political units and then demands their unification, or demands
an artificial unification, and then stops supporting these artificial
units,” asks Hrant Khachatryan.
The leader of the Constitutional Right Union mentions that besides
statements, speeches and calls the opposition is busy fortifying these
political units to have clear basis for unification and struggle
against electoral fraud and the victory of the criminal through
this. Hrant Khachatryan repeated the information he had given several
weeks ago that the opposition parties are making clear the number of
their effective members, who are able to battle the electoral violence.

Who Kocharyan Will Support Eventually

WHO KOCHARYAN WILL SUPPORT EVENTUALLY
Hakob Badalyan
Lragir.am
11 Sept 06
Before the General Assembly of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation
was held, everyone had thought that only the Republican Party could
hold the most outstanding assembly. It became clear, however, that
the possibilities of the ARF Dashnaktsutyun are not inferior. No
other political party’s assembly was marked by the presence of the
head of the administration of the president and the speech of the
foreign minister. It is also notable that the Republican Party had
accepted the invitation of the ARF Dashnaktsutyun on a rather high
level, and besides the leader of the party the chair of the Council
of the Republican Party also showed up. They brought Galust Sahakyan
along. The reason is not, of course, that God loves trinity, and the
Republicans love God. The reason was to show to Dashnaktsutyun that
despite the public “judgment” of Arman Sahakyan the Republicans do
not have a grudge on one another.
The assembly of Dashnaktsutyun was an opportunity to stage a show.
However, it was necessary that the show were especially evident to
the Dashnaks to prevent them from starting to think about using the
situation inside the Republican Party. And sure enough Dashnaktsutyun
had such likelihood, which became clear from the guests of the General
Assembly. Their aim was to show to the Republican Party that they are
as serious opponents as Bargavach Hayastan Party. Perhaps, the reason
for the presence of the head of the Kocharyan administration and the
greeting speech of the foreign minister was the same. Now everyone
is racking their brains over the question whom Robert Kocharyan will
give more support, Bargavach Hayastan or the ARF. In other words, who
the most serious opponent of the Republican Party will be. In fact,
it is difficult to realize, and it is possible that the Republicans
came in three, because it is perhaps difficult to understand the
abovementioned alone.
Maybe Robert Kocharyan managed to confuse the Republican Party. If the
Republican Party is unable to realize whose “uniform” the president
will be wearing in fighting against them, naturally it cannot prepare
duly for the fight. After all, the level of preparation greatly
depends on how well one knows their opponent.
Meanwhile, the Republican Party does not even appear to know its
rival. Before this they were convinced that Bargavach Hayastan is
their opponent and they even advised Dashnaktsutyun to mind their
own business. Now they can see, however, that not everything is so
distinct. It is also possible that by honoring the General Assembly of
Dashnaktsutyun Robert Kocharyan is confusing not only the Republican
Party but also Dashnaktsutyun. The president has every reason
for this. By distracting the Republican Party’s attention towards
Dashnaktsutyun Robert Kocharyan may clear the way for Bargavach
Hayastan. Not only the Republican Party but also Dashnaktsutyun
can feel this. And perhaps there was an arrangement between the
Republican Party and the ARF that the Republican Party showed up as
a prominent trinity to show to the president what a powerful force
they can make if by a sudden miracle the Republican Party and the
ARF Dashnaktsutyun start loving each other. And for the time being,
perhaps as a warning, they express this love in a casual manner,
the marriage of the children of Vahan Hovanisyan and Sashik Sargsyan.
In fact, one should not think that the grown-ups would turn the
feeling of the young people into a political category. And if before
the old friends did not betray each other, now the relatives-in-law
will not betray each other. The president may know this. The problem
is the information that soon Gagik Tsarukyan and Andranik Manukyan,
the minister of transport will become relatives. Not politicizing the
feelings of their children either, we should remember nevertheless
the serious political plans and essential role of their fathers in
the political process.
And almost everything connected with them will willy-nilly be
politicized, especially that none of them has stated something definite
about their political actions. It is only clear that everyone wants
to enter the parliament. And since only this is known, we may suppose
that they are likely to take every step for their political aims.
However, the political forces should realize that in order to enter
the parliament they should become related to the public rather than
one another. In this case, the aim would seem realistic. Although
it is not bad, of course, that they become bound to one another. It
is definitely in the interests of the public, even if they appear by
miracle in the parliament bound to one another. At that time everything
will be ready, and no time will be wasted on finding them one by one;
they will only have to transport them.

Dissatisfied With The Leader Of The Party

DISSATISFIED WITH THE LEADER OF THE PARTY
Lragir.am
11 Sept 06
The number of Republicans, who are dissatisfied with the leader of the
Republican Party Andranik Margaryan, is growing. The refusal to support
Arman Sahakyan was one of the reasons. We have learned that most
old members of the political party wonder about Andranik Margaryan’s
behavior, who in fact is not leading the political party. The divide
within the Republican Party is becoming deeper. If formerly there were
supporters of Serge Sargsyan and Andranik Margaryan, now another wing
has emerged, which disapproves the behavior of Andranik Margaryan.
