Turkey’s Nato membership potentially at stake, Kerry warns

United States Secretary of State John Kerry cautioned Monday (July 18) that Turkey’s membership in  Nato could be jeopardised if it  abandons democratic principles and the rule of law in a post-coup crackdown, the Washington Post reports.

“Nato also has a requirement with respect to democracy,” Kerry told reporters after European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini warned Turkey not to execute coup plotters. She noted that countries with the death penalty cannot join the European Union, as Turkey has sought to do.

Kerry said Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu has repeatedly assured him that the government will respect democracy and the law.

Kerry warned that Nato will “measure” its actions. “Obviously a lot of people have been arrested and arrested very quickly,” Kerry said. “The level of vigilance and scrutiny is obviously going to be significant in the days ahead. Hopefully we can work in a constructive way that prevents a backsliding.”

Turkey government seemed to have list of arrests prepared: EU’s Hahn

The swift rounding up of judges and others after a failed coup in Turkey indicated the government had prepared a list beforehand, the EU commissioner dealing with Turkey’s membership bid, Johannes Hahn, said on Monday.

Following a failed coup attempt on Saturday, Turkish authorities on Sunday rounded up nearly 3,000 suspected military plotters, ranging from top commanders to foot soldiers, and the same number of judges and prosecutors.

“It looks at least as if something has been prepared. The lists are available, which indicates it was prepared and to be used at a certain stage,” Hahn said.

“I’m very concerned. It is exactly what we feared.”

Standoff continues at Yerevan Police station: One more hostage released

People on the territory of the police station seized by gunmen have been supplied with necessary food and medicine, the Armenian National Security Service reports.

One more hostage has been released as a result of negotiations, the NSS said. It added, however, that the encouraging episodes do not yet guarantee the desired outcome and possible tragic consequences are not excluded.

The statement says the initiators of the attack will be fully responsible for the consequences.

“The terrorists should realize that they have no alternative other than unconditionally implementing all demands of the authorities,” the NSS said.

The Armenian law-enforcement bodies hope that members of the armed group will be guided exceptionally by good sense, when making decisions.

Man Utd: Mkhitaryan’s best bits in Wigan win

Henrikh Mkhitaryan provided a fascinating glimpse of his quality on Saturday by producing an eye-catching first-half display during Manchester United’s 2-0 win at Wigan Athletic.

The Armenia international joined the Reds from Borussia Dortmund earlier this month and made his unofficial debut at the DW Stadium, where Jose Mourinho oversaw a comfortable victory in his first match as manager thanks to second-half goals from Will Keane and Andreas Pereira.

Mkhitaryan started the match in the number 10 position and impressed the 7,000 United fans in attendance with an energetic, creative performance behind striker Will Keane. The 27-year-old was taken off during the break in a planned substitution, yet he had already made his impact.

Speaking on MUTV during a live broadcast of the match, Denis Irwin explained why he was bowled over by Mourinho’s third signing of the summer. “When he is receiving the ball, he is always available, his body shape is always right and he let it run across him a couple of times,” Irwin said.

“He looks like a player who wants to go forward as well and carry the ball forward to the opposition. We know from last year at Dortmund alone what he can achieve in terms of scoring goals, creativity and assists.

“So it has all been good. I know people will say it is Wigan, but you can see his ability to take the ball under pressure. He is at a good age, he has good experience and you can see that.”

The Kremlin said on Monday it was concerned by instability along Russia’s borders following a failed coup attempt in Turkey, a hostage taking drama in Armenia and an attack by suspected Islamist gunmen on security forces in Kazakhstan, Reuters reports.

“Certainly, this turbulence along our borders is a cause of concern,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told a conference call with reporters.

“Taking into account the information which we get, appropriate (security) measures are being taken.”

“We would like to see our neighbours as prosperous, stable and predictable nations.”

Armed group seizes a Police station in Yerevan

Gunman  stormed the premises of a police regiment of Armenia’s Police this morning and took people hostage, Press Service of the Armenian National Security Service reports.

At the same time their supports are disseminating misinformation on social media about a coup and invasion of buildings. The NSS declares that the reports do not correspond to reality.

The state authorities are working in their normal capacity and the law enforcement bodies are  working to stabilize the situation. Negotiations are under way with the armed group to organize their surrender to RA authorities.

“We assure that this any and similar attempts will be foiled by the law-enforcement bodies, those responsible will be held accountable,” the NSS said.

Policemen still held hostage in Armenia’s capital

The Armenian National Security Service informs that several policemen are still held hostage as of 17:00 and the demand of the armed group remains the same.

Representatives of law-enforcement bodies are currently trying to persuade the terrorists to refrain from actions that could threaten the life and health of people, to release the hostages and surrender to the authorities without resistance.

The special forces are in the state of combat readiness, but there has been no order to storm the building or take any actions.
