the massacres of Armenians in Sumgait taken place February 26-28
Baku is activating anti-Armenian propaganda at all the levels”,
NKR Foreign Ministry’s press service reports on the occasion of the
“Khodaly events” commemorated in Baku. With distorting the facts
Azerbaijan periodically reverts to the events of the 1992 when
weapon emplacements were being eliminated in the village of Khojaly
of the Askeran region of NKR. According to the version of official
Baku about 600 thousand of civilians were killed in Khojaly and this
figure increases year by year. With all this Azerbaijan does not give
up attempts to misinform the international community. It should be
noted that official Baku and Turkey are collaborating on the issue.
This year the Turkish parliament held discussions on the Khojaly
events. Anti-Armenian statements were lately made by the Turkish
lobbyists in the US Congress as well. These actions testify of an
awkward attempt of Baku and Ankara to equate the events on Khojaly
and the Armenian Genocide”, the NKR MFA release says.

Featured pianist programs a twist

Saturday’s performance by the Anchorage Symphony Orchestra will
include some old friends for arts center patrons: Nikolai
Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Tsar’s Bride Overture” and Jean Sibelius’ rousing
Symphony No. 5. But you could be forgiven if you scratch your head a
bit when you see the name that occupies the middle spot in the
evening’s program — a piano concerto by Aram Khachaturian.
The piece was the choice of pianist Timothy Smith, the evening’s
featured guest and head of piano studies at the University of Alaska
Anchorage, who will be marking his 20th year in Alaska with the
performance.
“(Anchorage Symphony conductor) Randy Fleischer had asked me several
years ago to play the Liszt ‘Totentanz’ with the symphony, and after
I played, he said, ‘We’ll have to do this again,’?” Smith said. “And
that set me thinking of unique ideas for programs I’d like to play. I
thought the Khachaturian would make for an interesting twist.”
Words like “unique” and “twist” can be dissonant music to the ears of
innovation-averse audiences that like their classical music, well,
classical. However, bracketing the Khachaturian performance with
faves should entice the crowd into its seats, while the music itself
will make them glad they came.
“The music of the 20th century is just starting to be discovered as
orchestras are moving past (featuring mainly) the music of the 19th
century, looking for new showpieces,” Smith said. “They’ve done the
Beethovens and Brahmses and the Tchaikovskys and so forth, and now
they’re looking to do things they didn’t do just last year or the
year before.”
As far as Smith is concerned, Khachaturian, who was one of the
socialist-realist musicians fostered under the early Soviet
starmaking system, fits the bill.
“He uses a very distinctive harmonic palette,” Smith said. “It has
epic scales, and his connection with some of the folk instruments of
Armenia is pretty clear. There’s one instrument called the duduk, for
instance; it’s kind of a cross between a flute and a clarinet, and it
has a sound that’s very mournful, very expressive and emotive. And
the character of the duduk is captured in some of the more somber
lyrical passages Khachaturian wrote for piano in the concerto.
“I think this quality will make the concerto very memorable, even to
someone who had no familiarity with his music.”
Smith said the concerto is presenting a challenge for him as a
musician.
“It can be intimidating,” he said. “In the traditional sense, it
presents some of the same technical obstacles presented by concerti
from the previous period. And it takes some stamina and endurance to
match up and stand with the orchestra; the piano is called on to
produce quite a bit of sound.”
Smith says the piece is not all sturm und drang, however. The more
“bombastic and triumphal” passages are balanced, he says, by passages
that are slower and more emotive.
All in all, he says, “It’s certainly not an understated piece, and it
translates into quite a spectacle.”

Greenbrae’s Kardzair to be inducted into USF Hall of Fame

Aram Kardzair was twice named All-Conference while starring in goal
for the University of San Francisco men’s soccer team in the early
1980s. He backstopped the Dons to an NCAA national championship
before going on to play for nearly two decades with a wide variety of
club and pro sides, and will be honored for those efforts by being
inducted into the USF Athletic Hall of Fame tomorrow evening.
Around Mill Valley, however, the 43-year-old Greenbrae resident might
still be more renowned as being the son of Karekin Kardzair, longtime
owner and proprietor of the Mill Valley Shoe Service on Miller
Avenue. In the days before the proliferation of sporting-goods stores
and Internet shopping, Southern Marin kids searching for the proper
footwear to join in the soccer boom of the 1970s and ’80s wound
inevitably end up in Kardzair’s shop.
“A lot of guys I’m friends with now, they knew my dad before they
knew me,” Aram Kardzair said. “I get that all the time. I’ll be
talking with people who will say, ‘I got my first pair of soccer
shoes there.'”
Aram Kardzair was no different. Though he grew up in the Sunset
District of San Francisco and played for Riordan High in the City,
Kardzair’s first organized league play came with the Mill Valley
76ers when he was 10 or 11 years old. He was quickly recruited to the
all-star Corte Madera Lions side, and played for both squads until he
started high school.
“A lot of those guys, I’m still pretty close with now,” Kardzair
said. “We still play a game every Thanksgiving. We’re 25 or 26 years
into it now.”
After all that time, the impression Kardzair made on his young
teammates hasn’t faded. Witness Jon Swain, who first played with
Kardzair after moving to Marin from his native Sweden.
“He was always the best kid on the field,” said Swain, who now lives
in San Rafael. “Not only that – Aram was always a nice guy. It was
good to have him as a friend when you were moving over here from
another country. He was a good role model to have.”
Matt MacPhee, who first played with Kardzair in the seventh grade,
remembers him as “a short, stocky Armenian lad.
“He was quite fast, which is one reason he became a great goalkeeper,
and he was incredibly strong for his size,” said MacPhee, who lives
“about three blocks” from Kardzair in Greenbrae.
Kardzair spent some time in goal as a youth player, but his true love
was playing in the field. During his first year at Riordan, Kardzair
tried out for the varsity soccer team as a field player.
“I didn’t make it, so I went and played with the freshmen,” Kardzair
said. “One day we had a scrimmage, and they needed a goalkeeper to
play. The varsity was training at the same time, and I stopped two
penalty kicks. The varsity coach came up and said. ‘What’s going on
here?'”
It turned out to be the birth of a career. Kardzair wound up being a
high school All-American with the Crusaders, then went on to USF,
where he took over the starting job as a sophomore. That season, the
Dons won the last of their four national championships.
“I would have to say that was probably the best team I’ve ever played
on,” Kardzair said of the 1980 squad, which will be honored at
tomorrow night’s induction banquet. “There’s no high greater in the
world than winning a national championship. From start to finish, we
just dominated that whole season.”
Kardzair would leave USF with 44 victories, 210 saves and 19
shutouts.
“He wasn’t a tall goalkeeper, like the goalkeepers you see nowadays,”
MacPhee said. “Never in my life have I seen anybody cover so much
ground in the air as he did. He’s the quickest guy I’ve ever known,
as far as reactions go.”
Said Swain: “I’ve seen him do the most amazing things, going one way
and then almost turning in the air to make the saves.”
Currently, Kardzair still keeps his hand in the game by coaching the
Club Marin men’s team, which just moved into the premier division of
the San Francisco Soccer Football League [he’s also treasurer of the
league], and serving on the board of the Viking Youth Soccer Club in
the City.
“He’s so giving,” Swain said. “He’s one of the most selfless people I
know. He thinks more about other people than himself, so it’s nice to
see him getting some recognition.”
USF HALL OF FAME
The Hall of Fame dinner will be held tomorrow at USF’s McLaren
Complex. Cocktails begin at 6 p.m., with dinner starting at 7.

Jahrestag der Vertreibung von Armeniern im damaligen Osmanischen
Reich hat eine heftige Reaktion der Türkei ausgelöst. In einer am
Sonntag in Berlin veröffentlichten Erklärung warf der türkische
Botschafter Mehmet Ali Irtemcelik der CDU/CSU-Fraktion vor, “sich zum
Sprecher des fanatischen armenischen Nationalismus” zu machen, der
sich gegen die territoriale Integrität der Türkei richte und auf der
ganzen Welt von organisiertem Terror Gebrauch mache.
In dem Antrag der Union vom 22. Februar heißt es, am 24. April 1915
“wurde auf Befehl der das Osmanische Reich lenkenden jungtürkischen
Bewegung die armenische politische und kulturelle Elite Istanbuls
verhaftet und ins Landesinnere verschleppt, wo deren größter Teil
ermordet wurde”. Den Deportationen seien 1,2 bis 1,5 Millionen
Armenier zum Opfer gefallen. Die Republik Türkei als
Rechtsnachfolgerin des Osmanischen Reichs bestreite bis heute, dass
diese Vorgänge geplant und die verübten Massaker gewollt gewesen
seien. “Diese ablehnende Haltung steht im Widerspruch zu der Idee der
Versöhnung, die die Wertegemeinschaft der Europäischen Union leitet,
deren Mitgliedschaft die Türkei anstrebt.” Die Union hatte bereits
Verstimmung in Ankara ausgelöst, als sie sich gegen
Beitrittsverhandlungen der EU mit der Türkei ausgesprochen hatte.
Der türkische Botschafter kritisierte die Darstellung der Union als
einseitig. “Wir möchten nicht hoffen, dass unsere Freunde in den
Unionsparteien durch die plumpe Verleumdung der türkischen Geschichte
beabsichtigen, insbesondere unsere hier lebenden Bürger zu beleidigen
und auf diese Weise den vielfältigen Beziehungen zwischen der Türkei
und Deutschland Schaden zuzufügen.” Die Erörterung der Geschichte und
deren Beurteilung sollte Historikern überlassen werden. Für
erklärungsbedürftig hielt er, dass die Union das Thema jetzt angehe,
obwohl sie sich früher gegen ähnliche Initiativen gestellt habe.
Das heutige Armenien ist eine kleine Republik im südlichen Kaukasus.
Das Verhältnis zum westlichen Nachbarn Türkei gilt als schwierig. Ein
Kernproblem ist der Konflikt um Berg-Karabach. Die Türkei hat
deswegen die Beziehungen zu Armenien abgebrochen.

Antrag im Bundestag – Türkei soll sich ihrer Geschichte stellen

90 Jahre nach Beginn der Massaker an der armenischen Minderheit im
osmanischen Reich hat die CDU/CSU-Bundestagsfraktion die Türkei
aufgefordert, sich diesem düsteren Kapitel ihrer Geschichte zu
stellen. Sie brachte einen Antrag in den Bundestag ein, der die
Bundesregierung auffordert, sich dafür einzusetzen, dass sich die
Türkei mit ihrer Rolle gegenüber den armenischen Christen »in
Geschichte und Gegenwart vorbehaltlos auseinander setzt«. Darüber
hinaus solle Ankara die Strafbarkeit von Berichten über die Massaker
aufheben.
Der außenpolitische CDU/CSU-Sprecher Friedbert Pflüger sagte der
Nachrichtenagentur AP am Sonntag, der Antrag solle keine Anklage
gegen die Türkei bedeuten. Er solle vielmehr erreichen, dass sich die
Türkei »mit Offenheit ihrer Geschichte stellt«. Daher sei in dem Text
auch bewusst auf den Begriff des Völkermordes verzichtet worden. Es
sei vielmehr von Massakern und Vertreibungen die Rede.
Damit blieb die Unionsfraktion in der Formulierung hinter einem
Beschluss des Europäischen Parlaments vom Dezember 2004 zurück. Das
hatte die Türkei bei seiner Zustimmung zur Aufnahme von
EU-Beitrittsverhandlungen ausdrücklich aufgefordert, den Völkermord
an den Armeniern als solchen anzuerkennen. Dagegen wehrt sich die
türkische Regierung vehement.
In dem Antrag wird darauf verwiesen, dass den Massakern und
Vertreibungen zwischen 1,2 und 1,5 Millionen Armenier zum Opfer
gefallen seien. Die Türkei als Rechtsnachfolgerin des Osmanischen
Reiches bestreite bis heute, dass diese Vorgänge planmäßig erfolgt
und von der osmanischen Regierung beabsichtigt gewesen seien. Mit
Bedauern wird unter Berufung auf Archiv-Akten des Auswärtigen Amtes
auch darauf verwiesen, dass die politische und militärische Führung
des Deutschen Reiches »von Anfang an über die Verfolgung und
Ermordung der Armenier genauestens informiert« gewesen und untätig
geblieben sei.
Berlin soll sich für Versöhnung einsetzen
Nach dem Willen der Union soll die Bundesregierung mit dem Antrag
auch aufgefordert werden, darauf hinzuwirken, dass die Türkei die
zwischenstaatlichen Beziehungen zu Armenien umgehend normalisiert.
Berlin solle zudem einen eigenen Beitrag leisten, dass zwischen
Türken und Armeniern ein Ausgleich durch Versöhnen und Verzeihen
historischer Schuld erreicht werde und die Aufarbeitung der Vorgänge
als Teil der Aufarbeitung der Geschichte ethnischer Konflikte im 20.
Jahrhundert auch in Deutschland erfolge.
Ankara setzt immer wieder alle Hebel in Bewegung, um die damaligen
Massenmorde nicht als planmäßig und regierungsamtlich gewollt
erscheinen zu lassen, was ihre Einstufung als Völkermord bedeuten
würde. So war im Januar bekannt geworden, dass das Brandenburger
Bildungsministerium den Völkermord an den Armeniern nach
diplomatischem Druck aus Ankara aus den Geschichtsbüchern der neunten
und zehnten Klasse gestrichen hat.
Das Verbrechen hatte als alleiniges Beispiel gedient, um den Schülern
den Begriff Völkermord nahe zu bringen. In einer revidierten Fassung
soll nach Ankündigungen von Ministerpräsident Matthias Platzeck (SPD)
der Völkermord an den Armeniern zwar wieder aufgenommen, aber mit
weiteren Beispielen für diese Art des Massenmordes angereichert
werden. In der Türkei stehen Berichte über die Verbrechen an den
Armeniern unter Strafe.

Die CDU/CSU-Bundestagsfraktion will Mitte April der Vertreibung und
Ermordung von mehr als einer Million Armeniern in der Türkei gedenken
und dafür auch die übrigen Parteien gewinnen. Am 24. April 1915
begannen die Deportationen in der Türkei.

Berlin · 25. Februar · Die Union sei trotz des eigenen Vorstoßes für
einen gemeinsamen Antrag der Fraktionen offen, sagte ihr
außenpolitische Sprecher Friedbert Pflüger am Freitag in Berlin.
Die Resolution vermeide “bewusst das Wort Völkermord” und spreche von
Vertreibung und Massakern, Man wolle jedoch niemanden anklagen. Der
Antrag stehe auch nicht im Zusammenhang mit den
Beitrittsverhandlungen zwischen EU und der Türkei.
Eine entsprechende Passage habe man ausdrücklich gestrichen, ergänzte
der Initiator des Antrags, der frühere Ministerpräsident von
Sachsen-Anhalt und CDU-Bundestagsabgeordnete Christoph Bergner. Die
Resolution werde auch von Beitrittsbefürwortern unterstützt. Es gehe
darum, die Türkei in die europäische Gedächtniskultur einzubeziehen.
Dazu gehöre, sich auch den dunklen Seiten der Geschichte zu stellen.
Das Thema müsse enttabuisiert, das bisherige Schweigen gebrochen
werden.
Der Resolutionstext der Union beleuchtet auch die zwielichtige Rolle
des Deutschen Reiches als Hauptverbündeter der Türkei im Ersten
Weltkrieg. Die Führung sei über Verfolgung und Ermordung der Armenier
“von Anfang an genauestens informiert” gewesen. Das Auswärtige Amt
habe Erkenntnisse “über die organisierte Vernichtung der Armenier”
besessen, aber nichts dagegen getan. Die Deutschen stünden in einer
besonderen Verantwortung. Der Bundestag solle daher nicht nur den
Opfern gedenken, sondern auch das Verhalten der damaligen Führung
bedauern. Die Bundesregierung soll ferner dafür eintreten, dass sich
die Türkei mit ihrer Vergangenheit vorbehaltlos auseinander setzt und
ihre Beziehungen zu Armenien umgehend normalisiert. Im Gegensatz zu
anderen Ländern hat Deutschland den Völkermord bislang nicht
offiziell als solchen anerkannt.
In der CDU/CSU-Formulierung wird bedauert, dass die Türkei noch immer
die Planmäßigkeit der damaligen Vorgänge bestreite. Dies stehe im
Widerspruch zur Idee der Versöhnung in der EU-Wertegemeinschaft,
deren Mitglied sie werden wolle.

AZERI LEADERSHIP DISCONTENT WITH JOHN EVANS’S STATEMENTS

John Evans, who said that Karabakh cannot be given to Azerbaijan,
aroused discontent of the Azeri society, Caucasian knot reports. In
this view, the Azeri Foreign Ministry issued a formal release, which
says, in part, “It is strange to hear such words from a
representative of the US State Department, which has many times
confirmed its support for the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan and
never recognized Nagorno Karabakh as an independent state”. On this
account the Azeri Ministry of Foreign Affairs requested the US
officials to render explanation of the statements made by the US
Ambassador to Armenia. Azerbaijan’s Ambassador to the US Hafiz
Pashayev also discussed the issue with US Deputy Assistant Secretary
of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Laura Kennedy. According
to Pashayev “the US officials with regret heard Mr. Evans’s
statements” and he was assured that “the US supports the territorial
integrity of Azerbaijan and does not recognize Nagorno Karabakh”.

Vigalondo, en chanclas por Little Armenia

Nacho Vigalondo, candidato al Oscar al mejor cortometraje por 7.35 de
la manana, ira a la ceremonia de los Oscar acompanado, entre otros,
por su productora y companera, Nahikari Ipina; la protagonista de su
corto, Marta Berenguer; la consejera de Cultura del Gobierno vasco,
Miren Azcarate, y el director general del ICAA, Fernando Lara. La
Academia le ha dado cinco entradas para la gala, pero a Los Angeles
han viajado mas de veinte personas que, si gana, lo celebraran en un
karaoke coreano. “Es nuestro ideal y estamos buscandolo, pero como
buenos espanoles haremos las maletas en el ultimo minuto”, afirma el
director cantabro.
Vigalondo y su equipo estan instalados lejos del Hollywood de postal.
El director pasea en chancletas por el vestibulo de un hotel de tres
plantas del barrio conocido como Little Armenia, donde reside buena
parte del millon de armenios empadronados en Los Angeles. El director
asegura que solo el viaje y la estancia en Estados Unidos ha costado
tres veces mas que su corto. “Son las luces y sombras del mundo del
corto”, afirma. “Los cortometrajistas somos como los politicos,
podemos decir que vamos a ganar, los directores de largometrajes
deben ser mas diplomaticos. Pelean en un lugar mas incomodo. Nosotros
estamos conociendo un mini Hollywood, el de los cortos, que tiene su
circuito y no se mezcla con el gran Hollywood. Entre los candidatos
se ha creado mucha complicidad”.
Visiblemente cansado y con dolor de muelas, Vigalondo cree que su
pelicula no se enmarca dentro del tipo de corto que suele ser
premiado en los Oscar. “Para bien o para mal, nuestra historia se
sale de esa corriente, no refleja ningun drama real, es una comedia
que, sin ser frivola, si juega con referencias poco correctas”. Hoy
saldra de su hotel para dirigirse a la alfombra roja. Sus amigos
seguiran la gala desde la habitacion. “Yo tendre mi minuto de gloria
cuando la camara enfoque a todos los candidatos. El resto, ya se
vera”.
