Woman who abandoned Down Syndrome baby in Armenia reunites with child

Woman who abandoned Down Syndrome baby in Armenia has reunited with the child, the reports.

The wife of a New Zealand father who abandoned him and their newborn baby in Armenia after discovering the baby had Down Syndrome has denied she is now back living with them both because of the huge amount of cash raised for their cause.

Samuel Forrest, from New Zealand, made international headlines in February when he started a fundraising campaign to help raise baby Leo after his Armenian wife Ruzan Badalyan abandoned them in Armenia where he ran his own business.

More than $600,000 was raised. But since then Ms Badalyan has returned to her husband and child despite filing for divorce a week after Leo was born in her home country.

The fact Mr Forrest is now $600,000 richer thanks to the money that was raised for Leo, is not the reason why Ms Badalyan changed her mind, she told 3News. She is just delighted to be reunited wither her son.

‘It was the happiest day,’ she says. ‘He was so small, so cute. I remember I hugged him. He started making some noises. He was so cute. I was very happy.

‘I undressed him and skin to skin, he did that noise. He’d do it a bit for me, but in his sleep he did it for a whole hour like a little kitten. He knew he’d found his mummy.

‘I was afraid he wouldn’t remember me. It was very scary but hopefully he did. At that moment I realised I could never let him go.

‘I’m not an ideal mother; I’m simply a mother. But I’m doing my best.’

She has asked not to be judged by New Zealanders – it has not been revealed exactly where in the country they are living – but that they can just be left alone to get on happily as a family.

Photo exhibition in Armenia on World Refugee Day

Save the Children in partnership with the British Embassy in Armenia will organize a photo exhibition on the occasion of the World Refugee Day on June 20, 2015, at 11:00 AM, at Sargis Muradyan Gallery in Yerevan.

The event will be attended by the UK Ambassador in Armenia Katherine Leach, Representatives of the Ministry of Diaspora, Ministry of Emergency Situations and Local Self Government, Members of Armenian Parliament, Yerevan Municipality, other government agencies, Syrian refugees and civil society representatives.

The world we live in today has more people displaced by conflict than any time since the Second World War. According to UNHCR, there are more than 50 million refugees around the world, half of which are women and children. With this event, we aim to build empathy by reminding the public about who refugees are and why they need our help.

The exhibition will tell the story of inclusiveness, humanitarian aid, spirit of volunteerism and tolerance. The photos will share the memories and results of Save the Children’s assistance to refugees in Armenia. The cornerstone of the exhibition will be archive photos of Save the Children support provided to Armenian refugees in Syria (who fled Turkey) after World War I, and the assistance that is currently provided to their fourth generation who has taken refuge from Syria to Armenia.

This historical perspective has become possible with the support of the British Embassy in Armenia and the London-based Centre for Armenian Information & Advice Hayashen, who kindly provided the archive photos.

“In May 1919 Save the Children was set up by two extraordinary British sisters, who felt that they could not stand by while refugee children were left destitute and starving after WW1.  Their determination and fundraising efforts saved the lives of thousands of children, including many Armenian children in Syria and the Soviet Union.  I’m delighted we can tell this story today – and highlight the vital work Save the Children is still doing in Armenia and across the world as a global champion of children’s rights,” says Kathy Leach, the British Ambassador to Armenia.

“This event is not only about the forced journey of the Armenian nation, but also about the evolution of Save the Children to become a helping hand for children in 120 countries of the world,” says Arsen Stepanyan, Save the Children Armenia Country Director.

Twitter to let users follow live events, not just people

Twitter Inc  will start curating tweets on live events, the microblogging service said, as it plans major changes to make its real-time news feed more user friendly, Reuters reports.

Dubbed Project Lightning, the changes will let users follow events instead of just people, and instantly upload photos and videos that can be shared across websites, social news and entertainment website Buzzfeed reported on Thursday.

A team of editors will curate the most visually appealing and relevant tweets about say, a red-carpet event or shooting, and present them in one place, so that users need not be flooded with every single tweet as it is posted, Buzzfeed said.

Twitter’s mobile app will show both pre-scheduled events and breaking news events, Buzzfeed said.

Twitter spokeswoman Rachel Millner confirmed the report but declined to comment further.

Twitter has struggled with user growth. About one billion people have visited the website, but only 302 million are users.
