Armenia Fund launchs “Our Home” fundraising campaign

Hayastan All-Armenian Fund affiliates in the United States of America (Armenia Fund, Inc./Los Angeles and Armenia Fund USA/New York), have announced the launch of their joint fundraising campaign “Our Home,” Massis Post reports.

This innovative campaign will culminate with the live 12-hour broadcast of the 18th Annual International Thanksgiving Day Telethon which airs on November 26, 2015.

Having become a Thanksgiving Day tradition for Armenians around the world, the Telethon will air from Los Angeles and be broadcast from coast to coast and internationally on cable and satellite television as well as online:

This year’s flagship ground-breaking project is the construction of single family homes for families in Artsakh who have 5 children or more and lack adequate housing. There are already 466 families identified in Artsakh who fit the criteria and 211 are known to live in unacceptable housing conditions.

“This is truly a humanitarian project and we have received a great deal of positive feedback from our donors. It is not easy to raise 5 or more children even in the United States, let alone Artsakh. We all should pitch in to help the parents who are raising the next generation of Armenia’s scientists, doctors, statesmen and artists by providing them adequate housing. These are parents who work hard, who do their absolute best to provide for their children, but, unfortunately, they cannot save enough money to build a home big enough for their children,” explains Antranik Baghdassarian, President of Armenia Fund, Inc. the U.S. Western Region affiliate of Hayastan All-Armenian Fund.

The homes that Armenia Fund constructs will have land plots of 10,000 sq. ft. each, where the families can grow fruits and vegetables. Armenia Fund will provide furniture for every room in the house as well as provide household appliances, including water heaters, refrigerators, washers, stoves and vacuum cleaners.

“Coming off the heels of the 100th Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, we reflect not only on our survival but our future – our children, the beneficiaries of this year’s Telethon’s target project. I am glad we are combining our efforts with our Western Region affiliate this year. It projects unity and highlights the importance of this year’s project. By streamlining our efforts and joining our unique talents and resources, we will better serve Armenia and Artsakh by reducing costs and operational expenses, thus allowing more funds to be allocated for projects. We call on all Armenians in the United States and around the world to watch the Telethon and donate generously for this noble program,” stated Khoren Bandazian, President of Armenia Fund USA, the U.S. Eastern Region affiliate of Hayastan All-Armenian Fund.

According to the program, priority will be given to low income families, as well as the families of active duty officers of the armed forces, families of veterans of the Artsakh Liberation War and to the survivors of soldiers who lost their lives defending Artsakh.

“This is a great partnership benefiting the children of Artsakh. Their parents do the heavy-lifting of providing for the children through their hard work, the government of Artsakh does its part by providing subsidies and allowances for every child, and we will build them new beautiful homes. The Fund will only be able to do this with the support of our donors, who we cannot thank enough for their generosity and caring. Today, when we hear about Azerbaijan’s unprecedented aggression against the peaceful population of Artsakh, it is important for all of us to send a powerful message to our brothers and sisters that our support for Artsakh is stronger than ever,” explains Ara Vardanyan, the Executive Director of Hayastan All-Armenian Fund, Yerevan.

The Telethon airs for 12 hours on U.S. Thanksgiving Day, November 26 beginning at 10:00AM Pacific Standard Time.

No inconsistency between Armenia’s CSTO membership and cooperation with NATO

There is no inconsistency between Armenia’s membership in the CSTO and its cooperation with NATO, Steffen Elgersma, representative of NATO’s International Staff, said at an international conference in Yerevan on “NATO-Armenia Cooperation: New Objectives and Perspectives.”

The event was organized by the Analytical Centre on Globalization and Regional Cooperation (ACGRC) with support from the German Embassy in Armenia, the Friedrich Naumann Foundation and the NATO Public Diplomacy Division.

“We have good cooperation with Armenia and welcome Armenia’s participation in NATO missions both in Afghanistan and Kosovo. We have also launched a successful dialogue in the field of security,” Steffen Elgersma said.

Speaking about Turkey’s aspiration to play a greater role in the South Caucasus, he said “it’s natural for NATO member Turkey to be interested in the South Caucasus, as it is situated closest to the region.”

“We do hope that the relations between Armenia and Turkey will improve over time,” he added.

According to Koryun Nahapetyan, the Head of Armenia’s delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, the relations between Armenia and NATO are developing dynamically.

Armenian, Russian FMs to discuss a wide range of issues on bilateral agenda

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will on Monday pay a working visit to Armenia, where he will hold talks with his counterpart Edward Nalbandian, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement, TASS reports.

The ministry said the meeting “will consider issues of mutual interest on the bilateral, regional and international agenda.”

The Russian minister is also expected to be received by Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan.

In April 2015, Nalbandian visited Moscow. The ministers regularly meet at events of various integration associations, including the Commonwealth of Independent States (a loose association of former Soviet republics), the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) and at other international sites.

Lavrov and Nalbandian last met at a forum of graduates of the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO), held in the Armenian capital in late October. The two countries’ top diplomats are graduates of that higher educational establishment.

‘Major disturbance’ and fires at Christmas Island detention centre

Inmates have lit fires at Australia’s Christmas Island detention centre in a “major disturbance” that is yet to be resolved, say government officials, the BBC reports.

The immigration department confirmed in a statement that guards had been withdrawn for “safety reasons”.

The statement denied a “large-scale riot” was taking place but said the situation at the centre for refugees and asylum seekers was “tense.”

The Christmas Island centre also houses New Zealanders facing deportation from Australia.

Catalonia votes to start breakaway process from Spain

Catalonia’s regional government on Monday voted in favor of a resolution to split from Spain, launching a so-called roadmap towards independence which the central government in Madrid has vowed to block, Reuters reports.

The declaration on secession, the first step which pro-independence parties hope will lead to the northeastern region splitting from Spain within 18 months, was backed by a majority in the regional parliament.

Parties favoring independence from Spain won a majority of seats in the Catalan regional election in September. The Spanish constitution does not allow any region to break away, however, and the center-right government of Spanish premier Mariano Rajoy, facing a general election in December, has said it will immediately seek to block the resolution in the courts.

London gives Moscow certain data on A321 jet crash

The UK has handed over to Moscow certain data on the Russian plane crash over Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters, TASS reports.

“Naturally, we hope for cooperation with all countries, which may assist in the investigation of this tragedy,” he said

“We can confirm that certain data has been handed over by the British side,” Peskov noted. The Kremlin spokesman declined to provide details on what particular data he referred to, adding that so far he had no such information. For the same reason he did not answer the question whether these data had affected Russia’s decision to suspend flights to Egypt. According to Peskov, it was up to investigators to confirm a particular version.

Answering a question whether Russia sees any progress in the investigation of the Russian plane crash, he said “it was premature to talk about this, there have been no official statements yet about even some preliminary results from the investigators.”

He refused to comment on the fact that the Egyptian investigators are considering a terrorist attack to be the major cause of the crash. “At the moment I can say nothing,” Peskov said.

An A321 passenger jet of Russia’s Kogalymavia air carrier (flight 9268) bound to St. Petersburg crashed on October 31 some 30 minutes after the takeoff from Egypt’s Sharm el-Sheikh.

It fell down 100 kilometers south of the administrative center of North Sinai Governorate, the city of Al-Arish. The plane was carrying 217 passengers and seven crew members. None of them survived.

Islamic State using kidnapped civilians as human shield against airstrikes near Kuweires Airbase

The ISIL terrorist group has kidnapped a large number of civilians from Aleppo countryside and is using them as human shields against Syrian-Russian airstrikes near the strategic Kuweires airbase, local sources said on Monday, reports.

The sources said that the ISIL has taken residents of a nearby area hostage and blocked civilians exit path to discourage the Syrian and  Russian Air Forces from bombing their positions.

The same action happened last week when a terrorist group operating close to Damascus kidnapped Syrian Alawite civilians to use them as human shields against airstrikes, by publicly keeping them captive in metal cages.

A militant group opposed to the Syrian government took Alawite civilians and government soldiers hostage in cages to protect themselves against air strikes, according to reports from Ghouta, an area close to Damascus.

On Saturday, the Syrian army troops, the National Defense Forces (NDF) and the Lebanese Hezbollah forces, backed up by the Russian fighter jets, tightened noose around the ISIL terrorists near Sheikh Ahmad and its surrounding areas to lift over a two-year-long siege of the strategic Kuweires airbase.

The latest reports from the battlefield said that the government forces are very close to seize back full control over Sheikh Ahmad after killing tens of Takfiri terrorists.

Russia to deliver S-300 missile defense systems to Iran

Russia has signed a contract with Iran on the delivery of S-300 missile defense systems and as soon as the first part of the contract is fulfilled, Tehran will rescind its court case against Russia for non-delivery, the head of Russia’s state technologies corporation Rostec said Monday,  reports.

“The contract on delivery of S-300 to Iran has not only been signed by the sides but has already entered into force,” Sergei Chemezov said at the Dubai Airshow-2015.

He added that as soon as the first part of the contract is fulfilled, Iran would rescind its court case against Russia for the non-delivery of the system, basically due to economic sanctions that were in place against Tehran.

Chemezov didn’t elaborate exactly which variations of the S-300 missile defense systems will be supplied to Iran.

Moscow and Tehran signed an $800-million deal for the delivery of five S-300 missile systems in 2007. In 2011, Iran sued Russia in the Geneva Arbitration Court after Moscow suspended the contract in 2010, citing a UN Security Council resolution that placed an arms embargo on Tehran.

Russian President Vladimir Putin lifted the S-300 delivery ban in April 2015, shortly after the P5+1 group of international negotiators and Iran reached a framework nuclear agreement to remove all economic sanctions against Tehran in exchange for its pledge to ensure that all nuclear research in the country will be for peaceful purposes.

Syrian Orthodox Patriarch blesses stela erected in Lebanon to commemorate Armenian Genocide

“Our mission in the Middle East is to be servants and not masters. Christians and Muslims in the region must work for peace “, was the focus of the message that Ignatius Ephrem II, new Syrian Orthodox patriarch, launched on his first official visit to Lebanon,  reports.

He concluded his visit with a solemn Mass in the Church of St. Ephrem in Beirut in the presence of Lebanese authorities and figures.

“The region of the Middle East – he said – is dear to our hearts. Here is where we have taken root and where we grew, and we will stay until the end of time. ”

Praying that ” human rights and dignity are respected”, he added. “How can we live without seeing the presence of God in every human face? Why are we working to eliminate each other, instead of educating and helping each other to grow to maturity? “.

The patriarch celebrated Mass in the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Pauland and blessed one of the two stelae erected to commemorate the genocide of 1915, whose victims are Armenians, but also Syrians, Chaldeans and Assyrians. The other pillar was erected in the church of St. Ephrem.
