Kristina Kvien: US does not presuppose the outcome of negotiations on the NK future

July 6 2023

Yerevan /Mediamax/. The U.S. Ambassador to Armenia Kristina Kvien said that "the United States does not presuppose the outcome of negotiations on the future of Nagorno-Karabakh.”

She said this clarifying her position to Armenpress, regarding many interpretations following her interview with the Public Television of Armenia.

“Direct dialogue is the key to resolving issues and reaching a durable and dignified peace.  The United States does not presuppose the outcome of negotiations on the future of Nagorno-Karabakh.  The United States supports an agreement that is durable, sustainable, and lays the foundations for peace.  The question of the rights and security of the population of Nagorno-Karabakh is central to the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan.  Ultimately ensuring that this population can feel secure in their homes and have their rights protected is the only way to guarantee a lasting settlement to a conflict that has lasted too long and cost too many lives,” Kristina Kvien’s response, disseminated by the U.S. Embassy, reads.

ICJ reaffirms February 22 ruling ordering Azerbaijan to ensure unimpeded movement in Lachin Corridor

 14:56, 7 July 2023

YEREVAN, JULY 7, ARMENPRESS. The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has issued a judgement on Armenia’s application concerning the Azerbaijani checkpoint on Lachin Corridor, the Office of the Representative of Armenia for International Legal Matters said in a statement.

Regarding Armenia’s request to amend its February 22 ruling in relation to the Azerbaijani checkpoint in Lachin Corridor, the ICJ issued a decision on July 6 reaffirming its February 22 ruling, ordering Azerbaijan to “take all steps at its disposal” to ensure unimpeded movement of persons, vehicles and cargo along the Lachin Corridor in both directions, and found that at this moment there is no need to amend the February 22 ruling.

Lachin Corridor, the only road connecting Nagorno Karabakh with Armenia and the rest of the world, has been blocked by Azerbaijan since late 2022. The Azerbaijani blockade constitutes a gross violation of the 2020 Nagorno Karabakh ceasefire agreement, which established that the 5km-wide Lachin Corridor shall be under the control of Russian peacekeepers. Furthermore, on February 22, 2023 the United Nations’ highest court – the International Court of Justice (ICJ) – ordered Azerbaijan to “take all steps at its disposal” to ensure unimpeded movement of persons, vehicles and cargo along the Lachin Corridor in both directions.  Azerbaijan has been ignoring the order ever since. Moreover, Azerbaijan then illegally installed a checkpoint on Lachin Corridor. The blockade has led to shortages of essential products such as food and medication. Azerbaijan has also cut off gas and power supply into Nagorno Karabakh, with officials warning that Baku seeks to commit ethnic cleansing against Armenians in Nagorno Karabakh. Hospitals have suspended normal operations and the Red Cross has been facilitating the medical evacuations of patients.

YEREVAN, JULY 7, ARMENPRESS. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) on July 7 facilitated the evacuation of 17 patients from Nagorno Karabakh to Armenia for treatment, the Nagorno Karabakh (Artsakh) Healthcare Ministry said in a statement.

The 17 patients were accompanied by their attendants and ICRC staff.

15 other patients, together with their attendants, who were previously evacuated and have completed treatment, will be taken back to Nagorno Karabakh by the ICRC later on July 7.

44 children are hospitalized in the Arevik clinic in Artsakh. Five of them are in neonatal and intensive care.

87 patients are hospitalized in the Artsakhi capital Stepanakert’s Republican Medical Center. 5 of them are in intensive care, 4 of whom are critically-ill.

YEREVAN, JULY 7, ARMENPRESS. The high-level delegation of the Council of Europe visited the beginning of the Lachin Corridor, which has been blocked for 7 months, ARMENPRESS reports, the permanent representative of Armenia in the Council of Europe, Arman Khachatryan, wrote on his "Twitter" page.

“Council of Europe High-level delegation visited starting point of Lachin Corridor, blocked for 7 months.

The visit was an opportunity to have a better understanding of situation on the ground, with its serious human rights and humanitarian consequences for people of Nagorno Karabakh. It cannot be denied that Azerbaijan closed the only way of life connecting Nagorno Karabakh to Armenia. Azerbaijan should ensure free and safe movement through the Lachin Corridor, fulfilling the judgments of the International Court of Justice and the ECHR and the recently adopted new resolution of the PACE," wrote Khachatryan.
