Asbarez: The Smoke of Fire: Armenian Library

Library: Armenian script and literature, printed in Diaspora and the Homeland, in Western and Eastern Armenian dialects, in foreign languages; documents, works of art, antiquities with a history of centuries; handicrafts and various other relics. And all that in today’s reality. On one hand, clothes and necessities are being collected to be sent to our migrants arriving Armenia. On the other hand, the library of the Armenian culture center is being established.

And thus, the long-standing project of Lark Musical Society, i.e., the establishment of the center-library of Armenian culture, becomes a reality. When crying and mourning transform into a constructive mission supporting the survival of the nation, when you push aside the veil of grief and look ahead, you find a way out of the abyss, then you have inadvertently defeated the enemy. 

This is our destiny that emerges out of the fire and continues living.

The preface was long, but in the last days the thoughts were gathered.

Aris Sevag

In 2007, Lark Musical Society appeared in the Armenian press with a message. “Dear compatriots, dear people, at all times, we have been affected by urgent national issues: historical, political, cultural and others. Our country and people have often had transitional periods connected with changes in both internal and external world… 

The Lark Musical Society has a Library-Museum program, the implementation of which will give an opportunity to the culture-loving society to gather, meet, learn and discuss issues that interest us. The future library already has several thousand names of literature from different people…

Taking on new moral and material obligations, the Lark Musical Society welcomes those who support the program and continues its mission.

Sixteen years had passed, those who believed in the program continued to donate to the library. Belatedly, however, the bookcases were ready, and sorting work had begun with the support of officials and volunteers. Suddenly, news is received that one of the main donors of the library is coming from Philadelphia and wants to visit Lark. Sorting works are speeding up as much as possible, and the library staff welcomes the donor Asdghig Sevag, the wife of the late Aris Sevag, whose voluminous library she had donated to the library.

Asdghig says, “When I entered the library, I felt Aris’s presence, his breath, I thought his soul was here. In vain, Aris would say that these books will be thrown into the garbage after my death. It was a miracle that Lark took care of Aris’s library, transported them from New York to Glendale, California (some 5,700 books, 80 boxes). Very few books were left with me as a memory and security cover. I am sure my daughters would not have been able to take care of these books either. Day and night, I will pray for the Barsoumians for this great sacrifice they made. Vache is the first person I have seen after Aris who does such selfless work for the Armenian nation.” 

Mrs. Asdghig says that Mr. and Mrs. Hagop and Marie-Louise Balian were friends both of Aris Sevag and the Barsoumian families, and through their intervention this donation and transfer was made possible after Aris’s passing.

We were interested to know more about Aris Sevag’s literary and translation activity. We had read H. Balian’s article, entitled “Aris Sevak, the Armenian by origin and the anti-fact of…”, where the author had noted the points that define this great intellectual that Aris was. Here is one quote: “In the multifaceted sorrows of the Diaspora, wild flowers grow that do not follow the general rule, and which give color and hue to defeat we call realism”.

We learned about Aris, this unusual person, from his wife, Asdghig. “His father was a Dashnag party sympathizer, but was not a party member. Aris had been the editor of the “Ararat” periodical (New York), as well as the editor of the “Armenian Reporter” weekly for more than 20 years. During the last five years of his life, he worked as a translator in the AGBU New York office. In the early years of his career, he worked as an Armenian teacher at the National Ferahian High School in California.

One son and three daughters from successive marriages and an immeasurable fruitful work to serve the culture of his people – this is the tangible legacy left by Aris Sevag, as well as the library that is now gloriously located in the complex of the Lark Musical Society.

Asdghig says, “He was absolutely not interested in material reward. it was important for him that materials about our Genocide be translated into English and be presented to the public. Many, many people would come to him bringing pages, books, papers, saying, “it was left by my grandfather, or grandmother, or, saying I found it in our closet”. Aris would translate everything with love and elation to add more pages to documentation of  the Genocide.

In 2001, responding to a request from Lark, Aris Sevag had translated Tahmizian’s two volume “The life and work of Tigran Choukhajian” published by “Drazark” publishing house in Pasadena.

In 2010, Rev. Grigoris Balakian’s two-volume English memoir entitled “Armenian Calvary” was published, the main translator of the Armenian text was Aris Sevag in collaboration with Peter Balakian. On the international literature website Words Without Borders, it is valued as a “comprehensive and sensational English translation of a document.”

Posthumously, in 2020, Bedros Gelgik’s Armenian-American Sketches, containing 29 stories was published, of which 20 stories were translated by the “late prolific translator” Ais Sevag. In addition to our conversation with Asdghig, we had benefitted from the Internet as well.

We were interested to know if there are any unpublished works by Aris Sevag. It turns out there are. Sevag had written, in English, the history of the Achabahian princely dynasty of Sis in Cilician Armenia, which had inherited the Holy Rights, considered the symbols of the Catholicosate power. Aris Sevag had spent 10 years on this work. His family however considered this very personal and did not want to have it published. After his passing, Asdghig had gathered the writings and handed them over to Greta Avedisian, a family member, who has decided to have them published.

Aris Sevag also had a plan to translate the literary-historical heritage left by his father professor Manase Sevag, a Genocide survivor, an American-Armenian scientist, member of the Armenian and American Academy of Sciences was born in Sis, Cilicia migrated to the United States in 1920 and died in 1967 in New York. He had written stories and poems about our massacres. Manase Sevag’s writings published in the press can be read on the Internet. However, Aris did not finish the plan; premature death had left this translation work unfinished. 

Asdghig Sevag has handed those archives to the Prelacy of Armenian Churches of Eastern USA where historian Vartan Matteosian will work on those works.

Asdghig is now reflecting on what a great work the Armenia-loving intellectual has done. “I had no idea that it would be possible to do so many translations. A person should have lived another century to do so much.”

In 2007, during the tribute by Hamazkayin Armenian Educational and Cultural Society of New York to Aris Sevag, on the occasion of the 40th year of translational life, Dr. Herand Markarian labeled Aris as “The All-Armenian Translator”.

Asdghig Sevag has been an active member of Hamazkayin of New York chapter and the Chairperson of the Parents’ Committee of St. Illuminator’s Day School she is still trying to place her beloved husband’s literary merit in a worthy way, as a legacy to the next generations, because that was Aris Sevag’s wish and message that our history must be passed on to those who continue our march.

Asbarez: Panel Discussion on ‘Memoirs of Setrak Timourian’ to be Held at Fresno State

“In Front of the Eyes of the World: The Memoirs of Setrak Timourian” book cover

The Armenian Studies Program is presenting a virtual panel discussion on “In Front of the Eyes of the World: The Memoirs of Setrak Timourian.” The panel will discuss the significance of this new book, Volume 19 in the Armenian Series of the Press at California State University, Fresno on Saturday, November 11 at 11 a.m. Zoom registration is required.

The panel will consist of the book’s editors: Vahé Tachjian (Houshamadyan Project); Yaşar Tolga Cora (Boğaziçi University); Barlow Der Mugrdechian (Fresno State); and Maggie Mangasarian-Goshin (Ararat-Ekijian Museum).

“In Front of the Eyes of the World: The Memoirs of Setrak Timourian” gives the reader a fascinating and detailed story of the life of Setrak Timourian, who was born in 1860 in Kayseri. He documented in a thorough manner, his life, the life of his family, and his many adventures. Timourian lived during an eventful period in Armenian and Ottoman Turkish history and thus provided insight into the life of Armenians.

The memoirs cover Timourian’s life from the 1860s to the 1930s, and stretches from Kayseri, to Istanbul, and Fresno, including his sojourns in Europe, in London and short stays in New York. His travels to Constantinople and then later to the United States chronicle his life as a carpet merchant and the many challenges that he faced. He also recorded his own views on the important events of the day. “In Front of the Eyes of the World” is an invaluable record of one man’s indomitable spirit and enthralling life story.

Armenian Evangelical Education Celebrated at AMAA’s 104th Annual Meeting and Banquet

Legacy of Edward Avedisian Honored as Benefactor of Khoren & Shooshanig Avedisian School of Yerevan, Armenia

The Armenian Missionary Association of America, the missionary arm of the Armenian Evangelical Church, held its 104th annual meeting from October 20 to 22 at the Cavalry Armenian Congregational Church in San Francisco, CA. A key highlight of the meeting was the banquet held on Saturday, October 21 at the San Francisco Airport Marriott in nearby Burlingame. 

After meetings on Friday and Saturday for the AMAA-affiliated Armenian Evangelical World Council, the AMAA Board of Directors, and the AMAA membership, Saturday evening’s banquet provided an opportunity to commune together and celebrate Armenian Evangelical Education. The motto chosen for the Banquet theme was “And I go to the source of the light…” from Daniel Varoujan’s poem “The Light”.

The evening began with a cocktail hour where guests had a chance to mingle. Once seated in the main ballroom, attendees were warmly welcomed by event co-chairs Vana Khanjian Vartanian and Roushig Kalebjian and greeted by Master of Ceremonies and local television news anchor, Gasia Mikaelian. This was followed by the invocation, given by CACC pastor Rev. Calvin Sagherian, and an address by His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, Prelate of the Western Diocese.

After the guests enjoyed their dinner with Armenian wines from the Alexandrea Winery, they were serenaded by the beautiful, powerful voices of tenor Berj Karazian and soprano Armine Vardanyan, accompanied by the talented Ripsime Rshtuni.  Musical selections from

Armenian composers Khachaturyan and Spendiaryan were featured, followed by Babajanyan’s spirited “Azg Parapandz” that had the entire room clapping with gusto. 

The performance was followed by a touching video tribute to the late Edward Avedisian, benefactor of the Khoren and Shoushanig Avedisian School in Yerevan. Guests learned of Avedisian’s musical talents as a clarinetist and his lifelong commitment to education with a history of philanthropy that included support for the American University of Armenia, the University of Rhode Island, Rhode Island College, the National Association of Armenian Studies, and his most significant, Boston University’s medical school.

Dr. Nazareth Darakjian, President of the AMAA, and Zaven Khanjian, Executive Director/CEO, then invited Avedisian’s wife, Pamela Wood Avedisian, to come forward.  They acknowledged her recent $1 million donation, praised her and her husband’s philanthropy, and presented her with a gift of appreciation. Her remarks to the assembled guests were particularly touching as she mentioned how thankful she was to have had the opportunity to share her life with her talented and generous husband.  Karazian and Vardanyan returned with another vocal performance after which Khanjian acknowledged additional donors including Mary Bedoian for her $1 million gift from the estate of her late brother Harry in support of Artsakh.

The program then turned to the long history of Armenian Evangelical leadership in empowering future generations through education. AMAA Field Representative Harout Nercessian shared an engaging video that brought to life the many schools and funding programs established over the years that were born of a belief that “faith and education are inseparable”.  Guests learned of the many institutions with academic and after-school programs that are currently operated by the AMAA.

Khanjian then came forward and summoned Avedisian School Principal Melanya Geghamyan and husband Andranik Mardoyan to the stage. He celebrated Geghamyan’s exceptional career as an educator and presented her with an ornately framed written definition of a school principal. Her husband, often serving as photographer at events, was presented with a camera belt and a camera-shaped trophy.  The couple each shared remarks of heartfelt appreciation.

While much of the evening was dedicated to celebrating philanthropy directed to the AMAA and its mission, the audience was surprised by the announcement of a $60 thousand gift from the AMAA to San Francisco’s Mt. Davidson cross. The immense cross, perched atop San Francisco’s highest peak, was purchased by the Council of Armenian-American Organizations of Northern California in 1997 as a memorial to the 1.5 million victims of the Armenian Genocide.  Armenians visit the cross annually on Easter Sunday and to commemorate Armenian Martyrs Day.

Khanjian then stood before the room to deliver his own poignant remarks that resonated deeply with the crowd.  He thanked banquet committee co-chairs Vartanain and Kalebjian and Master of Ceremonies Mikaelian. He thanked Rev. Calvin Sagherian and CACC members, led by Dr. Nora Balabanian, for their warm welcome as hosts of the weekend’s events. He also thanked AMAA staff in Paramus, Glendale, Yerevan, and Artsakh for their diligence. And he thanked the guests who travelled far and wide, bringing a “boundless spirit of love, care, and attention” in support of the AMAA’s mission. 

His remarks went on to discuss the sobering conditions that the Armenian community faces today, from the heartbreaking loss of Artsakh, “the most piercing national tragedy faced by the nation since the genocide”, to the menacing existential threat of invasion in the motherland. He went further to assert that recent events had laid bare the reality that Armenia’s destiny is in the hands of Armenians alone.

But his was not a message of despair. In fact, Khanjian described his outlook as positive, drawing strength from a faith in God to fuel the work that lies ahead, the work of sustaining educational, spiritual, humanitarian, and youth programs world-wide, and the new challenge of caring for the displaced from Artsakh. His final thoughts were softly defiant and rousing with words that left no doubt about the AMAA’s direction:

“Despite all evil, AMAA steadfastly continues to spread the Word and reflect His love, goodness, and hope around. Our weapon is our faith, love, service, and the pen. We are good at building, educating, enlightening, and spreading the Word.

“God has called on the AMAA to bear the yolk of our people and assume a humble role of service. This is our commitment, this is our promise, this is our culture, this is our mission, this is our faith, and this is our prayer.”

To close the evening, Rev. Dr. Vahan Tootikian, AEWC Executive Director gave a closing prayer and benediction which was followed by the singing of “Park Yev Badiv” by all.

Accountability, adapting and moving forward in the diaspora

The Armenian diaspora in the United States takes great pride in its accomplishments and legacy–and rightfully so. Theirs is a remarkable story. The challenges of maintaining the identity and infrastructure of diaspora institutions to promote culture, religion and national rights while providing a significant amount of support to the homeland should never be underestimated. This is nothing new for Armenian Americans. In my youth, our communities raised funds for our brethren in the Middle East to help build their capabilities, particularly in education. This parallel path has been a part of diaspora history for decades and was elevated to new heights with the independence of Armenia in 1991. Every community and organization has done its share, rising to the challenges even as needs have increased. The latest tragedy in Artsakh has given particular visibility to our enduring strengths, as well as our weaknesses.

Before continuing, I would like to clarify a related point. It concerns me that in the general media, and even in some Armenian media, the people of Artsakh are referred to as “evacuees” or subjects of a “forced evacuation.” Most interpret “evacuate” as a removal following a natural disaster such as a wildfire. I suggest the term “deported” or “deportee,” since there was nothing natural about the exit. People were in an extreme state of fear given the Azeri aggression and left with what they could bring. It was the modern version of 1915, with horses and wagons replaced by cars. Deportation is a component of genocide. Let’s call it what it is. The Azeris, predictably, have the audacity to state that the exodus was “voluntary,” but the military carnage and continuous intimidation prove otherwise. 

The global Armenian nation has at times struggled to be assertive in addressing changing needs, but has never been short on compassion. Currently, many volunteers from America have gone to Armenia to help with the overwhelming task of providing support for the Artsakh refugees. We should all be proud of the volunteers who have put aside their grief to selflessly distribute food, secure housing and offer comfort to those experiencing what our grandparents did. A friend of mine from California is in Armenia volunteering with colleagues from the ARS in Yerevan and Syunik. This is the Armenian nation at its very best – putting aside personal constraints and committing wholeheartedly at a time of extreme need. It is an attribute that enables recovery and an eventual return to prosperity.

There are times, however, when our emotions can be a limiting factor. Diaspora organizations and institutions serve the needs of constituents in their locations and evolve in response to changing needs. The AYF was created in 1933 but has adapted to regional structures when communities have evolved. The AGBU established a “Young Professionals” wing in recognition of the emerging need for professional networking opportunities. After five generations, assimilation has not eroded the diaspora’s identity base. There are two factors that slow the impact of identity dilution: periods of migration that replenish the base and a solid connection to the homeland. We have experienced the former with emigration from the Middle East, Armenia and Baku over the last 60 years. In the last 10 years, the identity connection with Armenia has accelerated, through numerous youth- and professional-oriented programs. Some institutions, such as the church, have created impressive immersion programs, but have been slow to respond to the intermarriage reality and societal (secular) barriers.

The common thread between all these examples is that self-assessment has not been a traditional strength of the diaspora. Change has been driven primarily by reaction, not action. We wait for a problem to fester, then make attempts to mitigate the negative impact. The CEO of a company I once worked for told me that great companies never lose their appetite to improve, even during periods of success. In such a diverse and dynamic environment as the diaspora, we should have control mechanisms for continuous self-evaluation that trump authority, egos or defensiveness. We have no such mechanism to improve our effectiveness. We depend on individual organizations for improvement. Some have the leadership, and others don’t. This raises the question: Is the diaspora organized for success with the homeland? I have observed an emphasis on promoting one’s organization at the expense of macro goals and collaborative opportunities. Some pan-Armenian initiatives have emerged, but aside from an organizational presence in Armenia, the model has not changed. If we are to optimize the vast resources of the diaspora and explore new initiatives, such as in the defense industry, we need new collaborative models within our existing structure and new public-private ventures. This starts with bold leadership that has the resources to make a difference.

We all have opinions on the causes of the loss of Artsakh and where to assign blame. Assigning blame has never improved reality and only provides temporary emotional outlets. Most of the concern is directed towards the Armenian government. This is not unnatural. When you lose something, the initial response is to blame someone other than the image in the mirror. We have to focus on where we can make a difference. Most of us in the diaspora are not citizens of the Republic of Armenia. Our relationship is based primarily on an endearing love of the homeland, which is manifested through generosity and commitment. We also tend to be free with our opinions without regard to their impact.

It is healthy and essential to conduct critical reviews of our performance in the diaspora. When it comes to advocacy for Armenia, are we focused on what the homeland wants or what we think is in their interests? Currently, Armenia is attempting a western alignment, which makes U.S.-Armenian advocacy convenient and popular. What would be our approach if Armenia advocated a strategic relationship, for example, with Iran and India? Would we still view it in Armenia’s interest to advocate a western alignment? How would it affect advocacy work here in America? 

Diaspora support must be at least loosely aligned with Armenia’s foreign policy. If we are to take credit for advocacy wins, such as foreign aid or U.S. recognition of the Armenian Genocide, then we should also accept our failure to influence U.S. policy as it relates to Artsakh and the Azerbaijani aggression towards Armenia. While our advocacy efforts address various subjects such as Genocide recognition and education, with Armenia’s survival at risk, America’s foreign policy toward Armenia is the priority. There are three branches of the United States federal government – judicial, legislative and executive – with numerous checks and balances, but foreign policy is essentially developed in the executive branch through the State Department. The legislative arm, Congress, has oversight, non-binding and review capability, but is not the main driver. Anyone who witnessed Sen. Menendez’s Foreign Relations Committee hearing on Artsakh saw the limitations of Congressional oversight. The PR firms and think tanks that influence the State Department should be considered an area of investment. 

We just suffered a devastating and frustrating lobbying defeat in this country with the Artsakh catastrophe. The United States did little to end the blockade or prevent the military attack and watched as Armenians were deported from their native land. Our failures represented the intersection of idealism and pragmatic self-interest. It may be time to consider shifting our tactics. Can we honestly say that the hundreds of statements and non-binding proposals of support from elected Congressional officials had an impact? The Armenian diaspora in France is producing results, seen in the French plan to deliver military defensive hardware to Armenia. Europeans have observers on the ground along Armenia’s border with extended commitment. America has offered support after the fact through USAID. There is a fear that the limited diplomatic support Armenia has received from the U.S. will be significantly diluted as a result of the Israel-Hamas war. Meetings with Congressional officials create the perception of influence but have delivered very little in terms of impact. This is a difficult message, in part because of the respect I have for the staff and volunteers of the ANCA and Armenian Assembly of America. They worked tirelessly for our people. I would suggest that we internalize this reality, assess the root causes and consider alternatives to improve the impact.

In an earlier column, I said that times of crisis create a crossroads. We have the choice of feeling sorry and directing blame, or we can take an honest look at ourselves, assess what we can control and take bold, corrective action. These are difficult times, but enlightened leadership should display no fear of new thinking. We should shed the distractions that distort our view of the critical goals. Pan-Armenian thinking should motivate our organizations to mobilize the diaspora to increase its impact in critical areas and open new opportunities. There are many collaborative models to consider that have been proposed in recent dialogue. Patriotic leaders should never be satisfied with sub-optimal processes. When opportunities are identified where collaboration can deliver greater impact, we should embrace those options and subordinate our affiliations in favor of the one that counts—the Armenian nation.

AW: Facebook’s Controversial Policies: Silencing Armenian Narratives

On August 26, 2023, Facebook suspended Artsakh President Arayik Harutyunyan’s official Facebook account. Generally, Facebook suspends user accounts for a variety of reasons, such as violations of the site’s rules and regulations, suspicious login activity that signals unauthorized access, the use of false personal information, or other inappropriate or illegal actions that go against Facebook’s Community Standards or Terms of Service. President Harutyunyan, however, had not engaged in any activity that would violate the company’s policy. The reason behind the suspension of Harutyunyan’s page was rather strange, highly questionable and problematic, to say the least. The suspension was the result of a continuous campaign of complaints filed by Azerbaijani users. According to Armenpress, “The president’s office said Harutyunyan’s account was actively targeted with complaints for many months, which had gradually led to many restrictions, including the artificial drop in visibility of posts and ban on certain functions. And as a result of the recent complaints the page became fully inaccessible on August 26.” 

President Harutyunyan only made one “mistake” for which his account could have been suspended: he was the president of the Republic of Artsakh. To best understand the absurdity of the situation, one should simply imagine a similar title: “Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s Official Facebook Account Suspended Due to Complaints Filed by the Russian Side.” Such a nonsensical title would be unimaginable for most, yet why does it become not only imaginable, but also real when it comes to the case of Artsakh’s president? Why has the game of double standards and hypocrisy become so mainstream that we no longer talk about it nor make an effort to fight it? 

This parallel reminded me of how I felt while studying in international academic settings. Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, a significant majority of the international student body voiced their grievance and discontent toward Russia and stood up for Ukraine in all possible ways, from fundraisers to spreading awareness across social media platforms. I admired the sense of solidarity and shared the immense pain of my fellow Ukrainian peers, hoping for an immediate, peaceful resolution of the conflict. Yet deep down in my heart, I also ached. I ached to hear all the voices that spoke so boldly and blatantly against Russian aggression, the voices that were silent as the grave when the same was happening to the Armenian people. I ached, not because they stood up for Ukraine (in fact, I was more than happy to see the unanimous support), but because they never did for Artsakh. I ached, because the double standards and the “made-normal” hypocrisy have killed my people in the past and continue doing so in the present. I ached, because some crimes against humanity scream so loudly, and some others are silenced to death. 

The suspension of President Harutyunyan’s official account was a deliberate attempt at silencing to death. The page, with over 459,000 followers, was one of the few sources for the communication and exchange of timely information between Artsakh’s government and its population which, by the way, at the time had been deprived of basic human necessities such as food, electricity, hygiene products and medical supplies for months due to Azerbaijan’s illegal blockade of the Berdzor (Lachin) Corridor, the only humanitarian corridor connecting Artsakh to Armenia and the outside world. The suspension of the president’s Facebook account was not a silly game by Azeri users but a deliberate attempt to completely isolate Artsakh’s population, not only in the real but also in the virtual world—something completely unjust and unjustifiable, something which Facebook, whether inadvertently or intentionally, played a role in. 

Nevertheless, the suspension of Harutyunyan’s account is just one instance of Facebook’s problematic attitudes and decisions within the context of Armenian narratives. On October 12, 2020, Facebook announced an update in its “hate speech policy to prohibit any content that denies or distorts the Holocaust.” This is a praiseworthy decision, targeted at the prevention of denial or distortion of the factual historical event of the Holocaust. However, the decision becomes less admirable as one realizes that the update in hate speech policy applies to the case of Holocaust only and excludes other genocides such as the Rwandan or Armenian genocides. In fact, pages still exist that publicly and blatantly deny the Armenian Genocide. 

The Facebook page “Armenian Genocide Lie,” for example, not only has permission from Facebook to exist but is given the right to make posts and comments about the “mythness” of the Armenian Genocide on a regular basis, sharing books, articles and highly biased opinions that distort history and present the Armenian Genocide as a fictional narrative invented by the Armenian people. The page has over 9,300 followers and therefore plays a crucial role in spreading disinformation and repeating the generational cycle of history falsification among Turkish and Azerbaijani audiences. Ironically enough, the background image of the “Armenian Genocide Lie” Facebook page features the following statement: “Document + Mind + Conscience (Morality) = Justice.” It’s ridiculous to see the grandchildren of genocide perpetrators speak about “document,” “morality” and “justice.”

Which document exactly are they referring to – the testimonies of Armenian Genocide survivors and their descendants (second and third generation), or the accounts of numerous international scholars, Arab and Greek eyewitnesses, rescuers and aid providers, foreign witnesses and Yezidi survivors, who all confirm the factuality of the Armenian Genocide? What do they really mean when speaking about morality? The “morality” of killing over 1.5 million ethnic Armenians by exposing them to all sorts of inexplicable violence that the average human mind would be incapable of imagining or seeing, let alone implementing? The “morality” of torturing and murdering children, pregnant women, the elderly and people with disabilities? Or the (im)”morality” of still denying the Armenian Genocide at the state level and openly supporting another genocide toward the Armenians of Artsakh over 100 years later? Perhaps to best understand how comical and ironic the words “document,” “morality” and “justice” sound in this context, both the admins of the “Armenian Genocide Lie” Facebook page as well as the policymakers at Facebook should watch the films The Lark FarmAurora’s Sunrise or The Promise. Perhaps after watching those films, the admins of the Facebook page who were raised and educated with biased and one-sided Turkish ideologies and narratives would be exposed to the historical truth and decide to take down the page by themselves.  

When the suffering of one group is validated and condemned, while the other’s is subjected to ignorance and indifference, important questions of impartiality, fairness and equity arise. Banning any content that denies or distorts the Holocaust while allowing the public denial of the Armenian Genocide on Facebook is another portrayal of double standards and hypocrisy to which the modern world, both physical and virtual, has become so accustomed. Acknowledging historical atrocities, such as the Holocaust or the Armenian Genocide, and banning any attempts at denial is a moral imperative, because it acknowledges the suffering of the victims and helps prevent such events from happening in the future. Denial and indifference, on the other hand, cause a perpetuation of injustice and suffering, facilitating the repetition of genocide. 

As the crimes of the past are not punished, they are likely to happen in the future, and it is mind-blowing to witness that, in the 21st century, in this “civilized world” of transparent communication and timely updates, some social media platforms not only do not strive to prevent the repetition of a new genocide but even facilitate its success, whether by inaction and indifference or the one-sided suppression of voices and narratives.

This phenomenon and the direct cause-effect relationship between denial and repetition can clearly be observed in the context of recent developments in the region: the devastating attacks by Azerbaijan on Artsakh in 2020 and in September 2023, the over nine-month-long blockade of the Berdzor Corridor and the resulting humanitarian catastrophe, the forced exodus of Artsakh’s Armenian population, and many other events that caused significant territorial and humanitarian damages and losses for the Armenian people, while leaving them under a new imminent threat. In fact, according to an article published on POLITICO on October 13, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken warned that his department is tracking the possibility that Azerbaijan could soon invade Armenia. This is not at all surprising, as Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev had previously spoken about his intentions to use force in order to solve the “problem” of opening a corridor along Armenia’s southern border in an attempt to link mainland Azerbaijan to an exclave bordering Turkey and Iran. As the crimes of the past are not punished, they are likely to happen in the future, and it is mind-blowing to witness that, in the 21st century, in this “civilized world” of transparent communication and timely updates, some social media platforms not only do not strive to prevent the repetition of a new genocide but even facilitate its success, whether by inaction and indifference or the one-sided suppression of voices and narratives.

As I recently moved to the College of Europe in Natolin to pursue my advanced master’s degree in European interdisciplinary studies, I had the chance to meet over 100 young people from various nationalities and backgrounds. As we were exchanging our contact information with one another, one of the students asked, jokingly: “Guys, is there anyone who still uses Facebook?” Everyone started laughing as if talking about something old-fashioned and outdated. This was a huge surprise for me, as in Armenia, Facebook is still one of the most commonly used social media platforms, where people discuss important socio-political matters and where the government exchanges important information with the population (such as during the COVID-19 pandemic, when communication between the prime minister and the population would mainly take place in the form of Facebook lives). There were as many as 2,163,300 Facebook users in Armenia in January 2022, which accounted for 74.3-percent of its entire population, whereas the registered voter turnout to the 2021 Armenian parliamentary election was only 49.37-percent. With such a large user base in Armenia and the “loyalty” of the Armenian population to the platform, Facebook should put some effort into making the platform more fair and just for its Armenian users and understand how big a role any of its actions and policies can have in the protection of historical truth and in the prevention of new crimes against humanity.

Failed peace negotiations between Armenia and Azerbaijan

YEREVAN—A planned meeting between Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and European Council President Charles Michel has been canceled, the latest sign of the failure of the peace process between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

The breakdown of negotiations became evident when Aliyev refused to participate in European-brokered talks in Granada, Spain at the beginning of this month. Yet he sent Azerbaijan’s foreign minister to Iran for the “3+3” format talks, which took place on Monday, October 23. While another meeting was scheduled between Aliyev, Michel and Pashinyan at the end of October, European Union Special Representative for the South Caucasus Toivo Klaar confirmed today that the meeting will not take place. The Speaker of the Armenian Parliament Alen Simonyan stated that the meeting between Pashinyan and Aliyev was canceled due to Azerbaijan’s opposition to holding the meeting in Brussels.

The idea of a “new platform for regional cooperation to ensure lasting peace and stability,” or the “3+3” format, entails a regional mechanism for peace, where the stakeholders include Southern Caucasus countries Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia, and their more internationally influential neighbors Iran, Russia and Turkey. While Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan first suggested a regional format following the ceasefire agreement ending the 2020 Artsakh War, this format was formally introduced in October 2021 by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. 

The first round of talks in this format was held in Moscow in December 2021. While most countries were open to this format, Georgia declined from the start, citing the unsettled disputes with Russia over the breakaway territories of South Ossetia and Abkhazia and wary of upsetting the political alliance with the West. Georgia also refused to participate in the latest “3+3” talks on Monday.

After the “3+3” format meeting held in Tehran, the participating parties issued a nine-point joint statement:

Taking into account the importance of the development of relations between countries based on mutual interests and neighborliness, they emphasized the peaceful settlement of disputes, respect for sovereignty, political independence, territorial integrity, the inviolability of internationally recognized borders, non-interference in internal affairs, the prohibition of the threat or use of force and human rights based on all the principles of the United Nations Charter.

They discussed the most pressing issues in the region and emphasized the importance of platforms such as “3+3” to provide opportunities for constructive dialogue and establish mutually beneficial cooperation between the countries of the region. They stressed the positive impact of economic cooperation on strengthening mutual trust, the well-being of nations and the stability of the region. They also noted the importance of cultural cooperation, people-to-people contacts and joint projects in the fields of education, science, tourism, culture and sports.

The countries’ foreign ministers also discussed strengthening bilateral and multilateral consultations and cooperation to promote lasting peace and economic development and welcomed the ongoing processes aimed at the regulation and development of relations between all the countries of the region. Positively evaluating the results of this meeting, they reaffirmed that this platform is open for the equal participation of Georgia.

The Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Turkey and Russia thanked the Iranian Foreign Minister for the positive reception and successful meeting. Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov announced that the next meeting will be held in Turkey in 2024, noting that periodic meetings of the “3+3” regional platform can expand and strengthen the environment of trust and cooperation in the region.

High ranking officials who participated in Monday’s meeting have made several announcements post factum. Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahyan stated that the meeting can create a basis for peace with the participation of regional actors and neighbors in the South Caucasus. Turkey’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said Ankara hoped the talks would “give impetus to normalization and peace processes.”

While some believe that these talks represent progress in the normalization of relationships between Armenia and Azerbaijan, the most important factor for regional stability is lacking. Political analyst Ruben Mehrabyan says that Armenia considers the “3+3” a consultative platform and is not foreseen to discuss conflict. “Armenia does not consider this platform functional to any extent until peace is established in the region, and peace will not be established on this platform at all,” he said. 

According to Mehrabyan, the “3+3” platform implies more risks than benefits for Armenia. This platform is focused on solving the problems of the region through the leadership of Iran, Russia and Turkey, without the West. Mehrabyan believes that without the participation of Georgia, any agreement within the format is between Ankara, Moscow, Tehran and Baku. “Azerbaijan has done everything to turn this meeting in Tehran into a factor that would allow Baku to avoid traveling to Brussels,” Mehrabyan added, which was confirmed today. 

In an interview with ABC Media, political analyst Tevan Poghosyan said that Aliyev will not sign a peace agreement after the signing of the ceasefire on November 9, 2020. Poghosyan added that Aliyev will not participate in any format that is not in favor of his interests. “He received all of the demands he had from Europe and now seeks a greater strategic advance through other formats,” Poghosyan said.

Armenian Citizenship Of Karabakh Refugees Called Into Question

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian indicated on Wednesday that his government does 
not regard refugees from Nagorno-Karabakh’s as Armenian citizens despite the 
fact that virtually all of them hold Armenian passports.

Pashinian said that the government will therefore grant the more than 100,000 
Karabakh Armenians, who fled their homeland after last month’s Azerbaijani 
military offensive, “temporary protection” formalizing their status of refugees. 
This, he said, will increase “the possibilities of protecting their rights in 
the local and international arenas.”

“Right after that decision, our sisters and brothers from Nagorno-Karabakh will 
have an opportunity to apply for Armenian citizenship and we will solve that 
issue in the fastest possible way,” he added during the government’s 
question-and-answer session in the parliament.

An Armenian law on refugees stipulates that only foreign nationals and stateless 
persons are eligible for the “temporary protection status.”

Many of some 20,000 other Karabakh residents who took refuge in Armenia prior to 
the September mass exodus have sought such a status for almost three years in 
hopes of receiving regular government aid. They say government officials in 
Yerevan have repeatedly told them that they do qualify because of being citizens 
of Armenia.

“If they have Armenian passports, it means they are citizens of Armenia,” the 
head of the government’s Migration Service insisted recently.

Ara Ghazarian, an international law expert, made the same point when he spoke to 
RFE/RL’s Armenian Service hours before Pashinian’s announcement. Ghazarian said 
that under the law in question, the displaced Karabakh Armenians are formally 
not refugees.

Pashinian’s government sparked controversy earlier this month when it refused to 
pay Karabakh’s public sector salaries, pensions and other benefits. The decision 
caused discontent among civil servants, teachers, military and security 
personnel, pensioners and other socially vulnerable people who made up a large 
part of Karabakh’s population. They will not be even paid for September.

Deputy Prime Minister Tigran Khachatrian said on Monday that these and other 
refugees will instead receive 50,000 drams ($125) each in November and December 
in addition to 100,000 drams given to them this month.

“I had a monthly salary of 150,000 drams, plus my pension,” complained Seda 
Sargsian, who worked as an accountant in Karabakh’s northern Martakert district 
before fleeing to Armenia with her family.

“We don’t want alms,” said another Karabakh woman. “My family has lost a member 
during each war [with Azerbaijan.]”




Canada Opens Embassy In Armenia

Foreign Minister Melanie Joly reaffirmed Canada’s support for Armenia’s 
territorial integrity when she visited Yerevan and inaugurated the Canadian 
Embassy there on Wednesday.

Joly hoisted a Canadian flag outside an office building in the Armenian capital 
that will house the embassy. Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan also 
attended the ceremony.

The Canadian government announced its decision to open the embassy in June 2022. 
It said it wants to deepen Canadian-Armenia relations in view of a “profound 
geopolitical shift” in the world resulting from the Russian invasion of Ukraine. 
It said the diplomatic presence in Armenia as well as four Eastern European 
states will help Ottawa “counter Russia’s destabilizing activities.” Russia 
denounced that explanation, saying that it is indicative of the West’s “arrogant 
attitude towards other countries and peoples.”

Mirzoyan as well as Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian welcomed the opening of the 
Canadian mission during their talks with Joly. Pashinian described it as a 
“remarkable event for our bilateral relations.

“I must note with satisfaction that the relationship between Armenia and Canada 
is based on common values such as democracy, human rights and the rule of law,” 
Mirzoyan said, for his part.

The Armenian leaders also praised the Canadian government’s recent decision to 
join a monitoring mission launched by the European Union along Armenia’s border 
with Azerbaijan in February. Ottawa said in July that two Canadian experts will 
be sent to the South Caucasus country in the coming months to act as a 
“third-party contributor to the mission.”

“Canada calls for the full respect of the territorial integrity of Armenia and 
reaffirms the importance of strict adherence to the principle of non-use of 
force or threat of it,” Joly told a joint news conference with Mirzoyan earlier 
on Wednesday.

Joly alluded to the risk of an Azerbaijani invasion of Armenia which Armenian 
officials as well as some analysts believe increased after Azerbaijan’s 
September 19-20 military offensive in Karabakh. She did not rule out the 
possibility of Canadian sanctions against Baku in the event of the invasion.

“When it comes to sanctions … I have said that everything is on the table,” 
stressed the top Canadian diplomat.

Joly also reiterated Canada’s condemnation of the Azerbaijani offensive which 
forced Karabakh’s virtually entire Armenian population to flee to Armenia. Baku 
must respect “the right to return of the recently displaced Armenians from 
Nagorno-Karabakh,” she said, adding that Ottawa has approved additional 
humanitarian aid to those refugees.

Just days after the outbreak of the 2020 Armenian-Azerbaijani war in Karabakh, 
Canada suspended the export of drone technology to Turkey. It banned such 
exports altogether in 2021 after investigating and confirming reports that 
Turkish-manufactured Bayraktar TB2 combat drones, heavily used by the 
Azerbaijani army, are equipped with imaging and targeting systems made by a 
Canada-based firm. Ankara criticized the embargo and urged the Canadian 
government to reconsider it.




Fresh Armenian-Azeri Summit ‘Delayed’ Again

The leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan will not meet in Brussels before the end 
of this month for fresh talks that were due to be hosted by the European Union’s 
top official, it was confirmed on Wednesday.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev 
had been scheduled to meet, together with European Council President Charles 
Michel and the leaders of Germany and France, on the fringes of the EU’s October 
5 summit in Granada, Spain. However, Aliyev withdrew from the talks at the last 
minute, citing pro-Armenian statements made by French officials. Michel said 
afterwards that the Armenian and Azerbaijani leaders will likely hold a 
trilateral meeting with him in Brussels later in October.

“We will not have a meeting by the end of October,” Toivo Klaar, the EU’s 
special envoy to the South Caucasus, told a conference in Yerevan.

Speaking via video link from Brussels, Klaar suggested that this is a “slight 
delay, rather than anything else.” There was not have enough time to organize 
the summit, he said, adding that the trilateral meeting should take place soon. 
But he gave no possible dates.

Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan said, meanwhile, that the two leaders 
will not meet in the coming days because Aliyev “did not find the time” to fly 
to Brussels.

“I hope that the problem was indeed to do with concrete dates and that a new 
date for the meeting will be agreed upon soon,” he said. “Armenia is ready to 
participate in that meeting. We remain committed to our peace agenda.”

“We have received no new proposals yet regarding [meeting] dates,” Mirzoyan 
added during a news conference.

Despite last month’s Azerbaijani military offensive in Nagorno-Karabakh and 
Baku’s resulting takeover of the region, Pashinian hoped to sign a framework 
peace deal with Aliyev at Granada. The document would lay out the key parameters 
of an Armenian-Azerbaijani peace treaty discussed since the beginning of last 
year. One of the main sticking points in those talks has been a mechanism for 
delimiting the Armenian-Azerbaijani border.

In a joint statement with Pashinian issued in Granada, Michel, French President 
Emmanuel and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz effectively backed the idea of using 
a 1975 Soviet military map for the border delimitation, which is advanced by 
Armenia. Azerbaijan continues to oppose it.

Klaar said that although the conflicting sides are “moving slowly” towards a 
peace accord, they will likely sign it in the near future.

Russia has been very critical of the EU mediation, saying that it is part of the 
West’s efforts to drive Moscow out of the South Caucasus. Yerevan appears to 
prefer Western peace efforts now amid a continuing deterioration of 
Russian-Armenian relations.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov held talks with his Azerbaijani 
counterpart Jeyhun Bayramov but not Mirzoyan on the sidelines of a multilateral 
meeting of the top diplomats of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Iran, Russia and Turkey 
held in Tehran on Monday. Lavrov also phoned Bayramov the following day. 
According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, the two men “reaffirmed the need to 
step up efforts to normalize relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan” on the 
basis of agreements brokered by Moscow.

Armenian-Azeri Brussels summit won’t take place

YEREVAN, OCTOBER 25, ARMENPRESS. The meeting between Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and President of the European Council Charles Michel which was planned to take place before the end of October in Brussels will not take place, RFE/RL’s Armenian service reported citing EU Special Representative for South Caucasus and the crisis in Georgia Toivo Klaar.

The meeting has been postponed due to timeframe issues. 

Klaar did not mention a possible new date of the meeting.

Prime Minister Pashinyan congratulates Kazakhstan’s Tokayev on Republic Day

“Please accept my heartfelt congratulations on the occasion of the main national holiday of Kazakhstan, Republic Day,” PM Pashinyan said in a letter addressed to the Kazakh President.

“The political path of strengthening statehood, modernization and diversification of the economy consistently implemented by you is a solid basis for carrying out socio-economic reforms and raising the country's international reputation.

“I am sure that further joint efforts of Yerevan and Astana for the benefit of expanding Armenian-Kazakh cooperation enjoy great demand and correspond to the fundamental interests of the peoples of our countries. I wish you, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, good health and great success, and prosperity to the friendly people of Kazakhstan,” the Armenian PM added.

Iran to host Armenia-Azerbaijan peace talks ‘without Western countries’

Foreign ministers from Iran, Turkey and Russia will meet their counterparts from Azerbaijan and Armenia in Tehran on Monday (23 October) and discuss progress towards a peace agreement between the two South Caucasus neighbours, Iranian and Russian state media said.

The first meeting of foreign ministers of Russia, Armenia and Azerbaijan after the September lightning offensive by Azeri forces in Nagorno-Karabakh will also take place amid rising tensions in the Middle East.

IRNA news agency quoted the foreign ministry as saying the countries wanted to talk about regional issues “without the interference of non-regional and Western countries”.

That was an implicit reference to the United States and the European Union, whose involvement in the search for a peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan has particularly annoyed Moscow.

Russia’s Interfax news agency said Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov would travel to Tehran for the meeting.

Since launching its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Moscow has sought to firm up military and diplomatic ties with countries outside the traditional West. Lavrov has met his Iranian counterpart several times since.

Russia regards itself as the security guarantor between Azerbaijan and Armenia, but the demands and distractions of its war in Ukraine have led to a weakening of its influence.

Azerbaijan last month staged a lightning offensive to regain control of the region of Nagorno-Karabakh where ethnic Armenians had enjoyed de facto independence since breaking away in the 1990s.

More than 100,000 ethnic Armenians were forced to flee and Armenia has accused Azerbaijan of carrying out ethnic cleansing – a claim Azerbaijan denies, saying people were free to stay and be integrated into Azerbaijan.

The two countries have fought two wars in the past three decades and have so far failed to reach a peace deal despite long-running efforts by the United States, EU and Russia.

The so-called 3+3 South Caucasus Platform, which first held talks in 2021, were to include also Georgia, but Georgia has stated previously it did not plan to participate in the initiative and said on Sunday it will not be coming to Teheran.
