YEREVAN, JANUARY 25, ARMENPRESS. 2021 was a tense period for the activities of media outlets in Armenia, connected with the post-war, deep political-social crisis and heated campaign of the snap parliamentary elections, Chairman of the Committee for Protection of Freedom of Speech Ashot Melikyan said at a press conference in Armenpress, presenting the Committee’s annual report.

According to the report, journalists and operators have often been targeted both by politicians, officials and citizens. “It was worth noting that during the mass campaigns supporters of the political forces were identifying the media outlets with those political force with the support of which they were operating. And as a result intolerance was being demonstrated”, he said.

Based on this, the Committee has registered 18 cases of physical violence against media representatives in 2021, during which 20 journalists and operators were injured.

As for the new lawsuits filed against reporters and media outlets on basis of defamation and insult, Ashot Melikyan said there is a big flow in this respect. 61 such cases were filed in 2020, meanwhile in 2021 this number lowered to 60. According to him, the same tendency is generally maintained.

“Those who have filed a lawsuit generally demand the maximum as a financial compensation. There are very little cases when they do not require any money and only want denial and right to respond. As for the approaches of courts, that maximum demands have not approved yet”, Ashot Melikyan said.

The Committee Chairman is concerned about the reports of violations of right to get and spread information as 99 such cases were registered in 2021.

Armenian expert: Baku was not an Azerbaijani city even in late 19th century

Armenia – Jan 26 2022

Baku was not an Azerbaijani city even at the end of the 19th century, Armenian expert on Iran Vardan Voskanyan claims.

"Despite the fact that, unlike the dictator of Baku, who declares day in, day out that Yerevan is an "Azerbaijani city", none of the Armenian leaders has ever claimed that Baku is an Armenian city, but the fact is that it was not at least an Azerbaijani city even in the late 19th century,” he wrote on Facebook late on Tuesday, referring to an 1891 book.

“At the time, there were more Persian-speaking and Armenian populations in this city of Caucasian Persians (Tats) than Turkic-speaking ancestors of the present-day ethnic Azerbaijanis in the settlement.

“Out of around 100,000 inhabitants of Baku, only some 40,000 were Shia Muslims, the majority of whom were Caucasian Persians or Tats, while Armenians numbered almost 26,000,” Voskanyan said.

Armenia – Jan 26 2022

Today, January 26, marks the 30th anniversary of the heroic battle for the Artsakh village of Karin Tak, Colonel Senor Hasratyan, former spokesman of the Artsakh Defense Army, said in a Facebook post.

"Today, exactly 30 years ago, the heroic battle for Karin Tak took place… On January 26, 1992 the self-defense of the village was led by Vagharshak Arushanyan, a driver by profession. The actions of the enemy were coordinated personally by then Azerbaijani Minister of Defense Tajeddin Mehdiyev,” he wrote.

As a result of the combat operations, the enemy, that had launched an attack from three sides, suffered over 90 casualties and was pushed back to its initial positions. There were only 22 casualties on the Armenian side, including three women, Hasratyan said.

“The village remained impregnable. Nearly 28 years after the Karin Tak heroic battle, another fight for the defense of the village took place. This time, the Armenian defensive operations were led by academically qualified commanders, while the actions of Azeri forces were coordinated by senior officials of the Azerbaijani and Turkish General Staffs…

“Under very incomprehensible circumstances, the securely protected Karin Tak fell on November 4, 2020,” he noted.

During the Karin Tak heroic battle 30 years ago, Vagharshak Arushanyan fell heroically, while his son Mkhitar Arushanyan was killed in the 2020 fighting, the colonel said.

“Glorifying the fallen heroes, let us remain committed to the idea of preserving our homeland,” he added.

Azerbaijani press: Armenian anti-Azerbaijan provocation foiled in Russian game show [VIDEO]

By Sabina Mammadli

Armenia's provocation has been thwarted by the fact that Azerbaijan's Club of Fun and Resourceful will continue to play in the league in Russia's St Petersburg under its old name "Shusha", Baku-based news website Day.az has reported.

Azerbaijan's "Shusha" team producer Mushvig Abbasov stated this in a video message on his Instagram page.

It should be noted that the team, which had previously passed the first round of a festival in Sochi, was forced to change its name in the second round.

This news sparked outrage on social media among Azerbaijanis. They stated that it would be better for the team to leave the competition entirely rather than change the name in this case.

According to the producer, Azerbaijan imposed a condition on the competition organizers that either the team's name be returned or the "Shusha" team leave the competition.

Earlier, Russian television game show host Alexander Maslyakov's deputy, Ruben Jaghinyan, an Armenian by nationality, demanded that the name of the Azerbaijani team be changed. Jaghinyan's provocation failed as a result of Azerbaijan's intervention.

On November 8, 2020, Azerbaijan liberated from Armenia's almost three-decade occupation Shusha, known as the crown of Karabakh.

In November 2020, Armenia accepted its defeat and Azerbaijan’s historic victory ended six weeks of fighting in Karabakh.

In all, 2,908 Azerbaijani soldiers got martyred in the war and six servicemen are still missing. During the legendary battle of Shusha, highly trained and skilled Azerbaijani special forces servicemen scaled cliffs and liberated Shusha from a brutal occupation.

As a result of the successful continuation of the victory march, the state flag of Azerbaijan was hoisted on November 8 in Shusha for the first time in 28 years. Despite efforts to Armenianize Shusha, the latter protected its dignity and the national spirit of Azerbaijan.
