U.S. Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5) has met with Armenians displaced as a result of the 44-day war.

“This week, I met with Armenian refugees of the 44 Day War. After hearing their stories and meeting their children, it’s clear that we must do more to acknowledge the atrocities that happened and to hold Azerbaijan accountable,” he tweeted.

“As a Jewish American, the targeting of ethnic minorities is deeply personal for me. The U.S. must do more to stand with Armenians, including expanding aid to Artsakh deportees and cutting aid to Azerbaijan,” Rep. Gottheimer added.

Robert Kocharyan: It seems that Armenian authorities don’t need efficient army

Armenia – Feb 17 2022

The Armenian army is unable to protect Armenia’s borders and ensure the country’s security on its own, second President Robert Kocharyan told a press conference on Thursday, referring to the country’s security problems.

According to him, almost nothing has been done after the war to restore the efficiency of the army and the ammunition.

“The incidents of last November in Sisian are a vivid proof of that. The recent exposure of spies who received $400-$500 indicates the moral and psychological state in the military,” Kocharyan noted.

He believes the budgetary funds allocated to the armed forces do not inspire hope for any change.

“The government does not pay due attention to the problem. It seems that the current authorities do not need an efficient army,” he stated, calling for efforts to encourage army officers.

Kocharyan called the Armenian troops, the CSTO and bilateral relations with Russia as three components of Armenia’s security.

Speaking about the CSTO, he said all CSTO countries, except for Russia, have much broader and warmer relations in all spheres with Turkey and Azerbaijan.  In addition, the leaders of the CSTO countries have personal contacts with the Azerbaijani president.

“Accordingly, it would be naive to think that the CSTO could somehow react to the attacks on us. It is simply ruled out. It is not that the CSTO is a dead organization and does not work. It works very well only when everyone’s interests coincide, like it happened in case of Kazakhstan,” he said.

In the meantime, Kocharyan believes Armenia should stay as a CSTO member.

“First, there is no other structure that could replace the CSTO. Second, there are numerous treaties within the organization, which regulate Armenia’s cooperation with Russia in the military-technical sphere,” he noted.

Kocharyan says relations with Russia are the only valid circumstance in the security sphere, but the 44-day war has revealed some problems.

“The absence of border with Russia has shown some limitations in its assistance. There is still no answer as to why Georgia’s airspace was closed for the transportation of military cargoes. Did the Armenian authorities calculate this or was it a surprise for them as well? There is still no answer as to why Iranian airspace was closed during the first two weeks of the war. This factor greatly affected the outcome of the war,” Kocharyan said.

Kocharyan: Lukashenko said what others think about Armenia

Armenia’s second President Robert Kocharyan says that President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko had to stay within the limits of political correctness in his statements about Armenia. Nevertheless, he said what others think about Armenia.

“You can have different opinions about Lukashenko, but one thing is clear: he always speaks his mind,” he told a news conference on Thursday.

“Naturally, the head of state does not always have to say what he thinks, but he does. However, I don’t understand the tough reactions caused by Lukashenko’s remarks,” Kocharyan said.

According to him, Lukashenka’s remarks can by no means be compared to the Azerbaijani president’s statements, which have received no response from Armenia.

“Of course, the Belarusian president should not have spoken in such a tone and had to stay within the limits of correctness. But we also have to realize that he has said what others think about Armenia. In the meantime, the authorities are doing everything possible to make such an attitude towards Armenia even more entrenched, or they are doing nothing to make the leaders of other countries to change their opinion,” he noted.

In a recent interview with Russian journalist Vladimir Solovyov, Lukashenko said the Union State of Russia and Belarus should expand and include most of the ex-Soviet states, including Armenia.

“Armenia has nowhere to run. Do you think anyone needs them? They have already seen it,” he said.

YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 16, ARMENPRESS. A demonstration was held outside the UN Armenia Office in Yerevan demanding the international community and the UN to take measures and prevent the destruction of Armenian cultural heritage in Artsakh by Azerbaijan.

Gayane Abrahamyan, a former lawmaker and the representative of the For Equal Rights Educational Center, told reporters that the demonstration is organized by several NGOs and public figures.

“The Azerbaijani side is falsely claiming that the heritage which is in Artsakh for centuries isn’t Armenian. This is a lie, however the actions that they are carrying out for decades cause concern that one day we wont be able to counter these lies. That’s why we are stressing that we have months. If we don’t fight against these lies now and don’t apply to all possible international organizations, namely UNESCO, we will simply lose the Armenianness of Artsakh, because the Azerbaijani authorities are trying to erase our trace. By doing so, they are trying to rule out the right to self-determination from the Armenian side and generally any aspiration in Artsakh,” Abrahamyan warned.

She reminded that the International Court of Justice ruled that Azerbaijan must take all necessary measures to prevent and punish acts of vandalism and desecration affecting Armenian cultural heritage, including but not limited to churches and other places of worship, monuments, landmarks, cemeteries and artefacts.

Abrahamyan said they will meet the UN Armenia Office administration after the demonstration. She said they’ve addressed a letter to UNESCO last week.

Anther member of the initiative, Seda Grigoryan, highlighted the need to ensure access of international monitoring groups to the territories which Azerbaijan captured during the war. “According to the information I have the Armenian authorities are doing everything they can so that such groups are dispatched there, but Azerbaijan is denying access. International observers must go and see the monuments on the ground and document them,” she said.

YEREVAN, 16 FEBRUARY, ARMENPRESS. The 29th ProdExpo 2022 International Exhibition was held in Moscow on February 7-11. The Vine and Wine Foundation of Armenia presented the Armenian wines. Deputy Minister of Economy Arman Khojoyan also took part in the exhibition.

As ARMENPRESS was infomred from the Ministry of Economy, “ProdExpo” is the largest international exhibition of food and alcohol in Russia and Eastern Europe. This year the exhibition had about 2660 participants from 73 countries.

15 Armenian wine companies participated in the “ProdExpo” in the united pavillion of the Vine and Wine Foundation of Armenia, 4 of which presented their product in Russia for the first time.

A tasting competition was also held within the framework of the exhibition, where the pomegranate wine of “Tiran” of the Armenian GS Wine Company, which participated in the exhibition for the first time, was awarded a with a gold medal and a diploma. More than two dozen wines of Armenia Wine Company won gold and silver-bronze medals.

“For us, ProdExpo is one of the most important exhibitions, taking into account that Russia is the largest market for the export of Armenian wine. Consumption of Armenian fruit wines has been declining in Russia since January as a result of the adoption of a law on fruit wine labeling. Therefore, our participation was very important, which gave our producers the opportunity to establish new partnerships with companies engaged in the import and sale of wines,” said Zaruhi Muradyan, Executive Director of the Vine and Wine Foundation of Armenia.
