Court does not allow Armenia ex-deputy PM, now lawmaker Gevorgyan to attend PACE subcommittee session

Armenia –

The Yerevan court once again did not allow former deputy prime minister Armen Gevorgyan, who is now an MP of the opposition “Armenia” Faction in the National Assembly of Armenia, to attend the session of a subcommittee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE).

At the start of Tuesday’s court hearing on the criminal case against second President Robert Kocharyan and Gevorgyan, Presiding Judge Anna Danibekyan stated that Gevorgyan had submitted a petition, which his lawyer Lusine Sahakyan presented.

The petition asked the court to grant Armen Gevorgyan permission to travel to Rome to participate in the sitting of a PACE subcommittee.

The defense joined this petition.

But the prosecution objected to it, making reference to previous similar discussions.

The court denied the petition, arguing that Gevorgyan’s behavior—in particular, his “disrespectful” absence from the previous court hearing and the decision to subpoena him—raises fears that he would not return.

Aliyev relies on US support, unnoticeably blackmails in his ‘peace agenda’ with Armenia

News.am
Armenia –

President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev has thanked US President Joe Biden for congratulating him on the occasion of Nowruz, AzerTac reported.

In the respective letter, Aliyev listed all the achievements of three decades of US-Azerbaijan cooperation, and paid special attention to the energy sector.

Even in this letter, however, Aliyev could not resist the temptation to distort the facts and blackmail. First, Aliyev deliberately singled out one from the whole list of principles. In diplomatic interpretation, the Azerbaijani president reminded the US president of the Azerbaijani oil and natural gas reserves, linking it to Washington’s support to Baku’s position in the “peace agenda” with Armenia.

Given that the collective West ranks energy security issues far higher than the values of democracy and human rights proclaimed by it, Aliyev might have chosen the right emphasis. Otherwise, the same West would somehow react to the “natural gas blockade” which Azerbaijan has subjected the people of Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) to.

Armenia opposition MP: Authorities’ steps are bringing war even closer

News.am
Armenia –

The steps of the Armenian authorities are bringing the war even closer. Tigran Abrahamyan, an MP from the opposition “With Honor” Faction in the National Assembly of Armenia and a security expert, stated about this during a discussion Tuesday.

According to him, what the Armenian authorities are talking about, and what Azerbaijan is harmoniously presenting, contains more threats of war rather than the possibility of peace.

Abrahamyan expressed a conviction that in reality there is a wrong opinion that there is a peace agenda for Armenia, and in the public perception there is an impression that there are forces that are for and against peace.

He reminded that after the proclamation of the “era of peace” the sovereign territory of Armenia was subjected to Azerbaijani military aggression, and a part was occupied. According to him, Azerbaijan demands more and will demand more.

Abrahamyan stressed that the Armenian authorities are now trying to fit into the agenda proposed by Azerbaijan and Turkey. He considered the absence of visits of Armenia’s high-ranking officials to Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) a targeted policy of alienation of Artsakh, so that in the future there would be the lowest possible level of resistance in Armenia to solve their issues.

Tigran Abrahamyan noted that Artsakh is in serious danger, whereas Armenia’s authorities do not seek to eliminate it, or at least reduce the risks.

Solely the opposition “Armenia” and “With Honor” Factions—that is, only 30 of the 107 NA lawmakers—voted for this draft.

Armenia among countries that detains Russian planes

Armenia –

Almost 80 planes of Russian airlines have been detained abroad because of the anti-Russian sanctions, the head of the Russian Ministry of Transport Vitaly Savelyev said, Interfax reported.

“We had a total of 1,367,000 planes in the country (before the sanctions). We lost 78 machines, they were detained,” Savelyev said during a meeting of the Federation Council committee on economic policy. The planes were detained in the friendly countries of Russia – Turkey, Azerbaijan and Armenia, he said.

According to Savelyev, Russia is trying to negotiate with Western leasing companies to buy the planes back, but they are not negotiating. Under these conditions, Russia started transferring the aircraft fleet to the Russian registry. “We have already transferred (to the Russian registry) almost 800 machines, we insure them in Russian reinsurance companies, under the Central Bank. We are looking for legal ways to negotiate with lessors and resolve this issue, but so far we have not succeeded,” Savelyev said.

Sports: Armenia vs Montenegro prediction, preview, team news and more | International friendly 2022

Sachin Bhat , Analyst

Armenia host Montenegro at the Stepanakert Republican Stadium in Stepanakert on Thursday for an international friendly.

The Mountaineers are looking to put the World Cup disappointment behind them and start afresh.

Despite going unbeaten in their first four games, including a win in each of their first three, they finished fourth in Group J.

Key player Henrikh Mkhitaryan also announced his retirement earlier this month.

The Brave Falcons met with a similar fate in Group G after finishing with an identical record as Armenia with three wins, three draws and four defeats from 10 qualifying games.

Now, both these sides look forward to the UEFA Nations League in June.

Montenegro have been drawn alongside Romania, Greece and Bosnia in Group 3 of League B, while Armenia face Scotland, Ireland and Ukraine in Group 1 of the same league.

There have only been two previous clashes between the sides, with each team claiming one win.

Armenia beat Montenegro 3-2 at home in a 2018 World Cup qualifier but the latter gained revenge with a 4-1 thumping in the return.

Music: This pianist [Kariné Poghosyan] has been streaming weekly concerts for TWO YEARS straight

|
By Ellie Palmer

As the world began shutting down in March 2020, pianists around the globe had to make the agonising decision to cancel all performance dates until further notice. Covid wreaked havoc right across the music industry, forcing venues to close and drying up many performers’ main sources of income. But one thing that kept many piano lovers sane was the emergence of regular online live performances from our favourite pianists.

Within days, the likes of Igor Levit, Boris Giltburg and Dominic Ferris were giving weekly performances on their social channels. The concept caught like wild fire.

The likes of Angela Hewitt, The Lang Lang International Music Foundation, the Kanneh-Mason family and Eleonor Bindman among countless others started to join in. Soon enough, we were spoilt for choice when it came to piano entertainment.

Two years on and the majority have stopped the regular live streams as venues have reopened again, but one pianist who has continued is Kariné Poghosyan. The Armenian-American concert pianist has been streaming weekly for the entire two years.

This Friday, she will stream her 100th performance since the pandemic began. It’s quite a feat.

“On the Wednesday of the first week of lockdown in New York [in 2020], I timidly posted a question on my Facebook page,” she explains. “Since all my concerts had been cancelled and we all had nowhere to go, I asked if anyone would be interested in a Facebook Live ‘Mini Concert’ on Friday night. I felt so shy about it that I was genuinely planning on coming back in a few hours and just deleting the post. To my surprise, by that time there had already been a couple of dozen excited replies. Then after that first one on March 20, 2020, viewers kept asking for more and more, and it turned into a weekly series!”

Kariné says that the most beautiful thing about the two-year journey has been the connections she has been able to make and witness over her livestreams. “Relatives stuck on different continents would re-connect during the livestream, strangers would meet and become friends,” she explains.

“I even had a viewer, whose good friend had heard me perform the Mussorgsky ‘Pictures’ in Italy and who was now ill. [They] asked me if I could play the Mussorgsky as a special note of encouragement to him. I did play it and then asked the viewers to put their prayers and good wishes in the comments, and within seconds, there was an outpouring of love for this man on the other side of the world from me – it was just extraordinary. If there was ever a question about just how incredibly essential music is to maintaining our common humanity, my series I hope will help answer that.”

“The most beautiful thing has been the real-time connection with listeners from all over the world, all coming together at the same time each week to bond over great music.”

Will she carry on past 100?

“I have loved this medium so much that I will definitely do more livestreams, though not on such a regular basis. However, as things are opening up and in-person concerts return, I will look for every opportunity to incorporate live-streaming, so as to share the experience with those who cannot be there physically.”

Kariné has recently been signed by Navona Records, where she will record her next album of works by Grieg, Coleridge Taylor, and Liszt. She has also started an exciting undertaking on her Patreon page. Patreon subscribers will be able to access a monthly virtual recital series titled “Musical Time Travels!” It will include 12 full solo programmes from various historical periods in 12 months, with a global audience of patrons tuning in on Zoom.

Select upcoming in-person performances include solo recitals at Carnegie Hall, Ehrbar Saal in Vienna and the Soraya Performing Arts center in Northridge, California, as well as concerti performances with Wallingford Symphony and Evanston Symphony Orchestras. You can keep up to date with Kariné here.

Sports: Gary Chivichyan made significant strides when he became the first Armenian nominated for the ESPN ESPY’s award

BRAND PARTNER CONTENTMARCH 22, 2022

The NBA is undoubtedly the most popular basketball league in the world. A player’s league, where jersey sales are a part of its branding and tradition. Superstars like Lebron James, Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, and Luka Doncic account for the top-selling jerseys. Once in a blue moon, we would see players like Jeremy Lin become a fan favorite. “Linsanity” took over, and the Lins surname was on every New York Knick Jersey purchased. This year, a similar event occurred for the LA Clippers G league affiliate, The name? Gary Chivichyan.

Chivichyan, a guard for the AC Clippers (affiliate of the Los Angeles Clippers), made significant strides when he became the first Armenian nominated for the ESPN ESPY’s award. Chivichyan finished 4th all-time in Idaho State Universities’ three-point field goals and led the Pacific Tigers to a 23 game winning season as the second-leading scorer. He broke numerous NCAA shooting records and garnered the attention of many NBA teams. The Minnesota Timberwolves G League Affiliate Iowa Wolves drafted Chivichyan (Second round, pick #7) in the 2021 NBA G league draft.

Chivichyan later signed with the Clippers following training camp and immediately became a fan favorite. Due to his presence on and off the court, the AC clippers sold thousands of tickets for their home games at the Toyota Center in Ontario, California, breaking every attendance record. Following demand from thousands of fans, the Clippers decided to do the inevitable, selling Chivichyan’s G league jersey to the public, an unprecedented decision and one that has never been done before for an NBA G league player. The decision paid off as jerseys are selling at a rapid rate. The website for the AC Clippers has Chivichyan’s jersey up for sale for an official NBA price of $100 per jersey. They recently posted on their social media, “The wait is over! Get your authentic, game-worn Gary Chivichyan jersey on our mobile ordering website NOW”.

They are aware of his skills on the court, his prowess as a shooter and scorer, and the value he brings to the basketball team. They are also mindful of the positive image amongst the clipper fans and communities.

“I am a minority in this sport and have accomplished a great deal just in my first year. From being the first Armenian to be drafted after a successful college career, overcoming the hurdles of the pandemic, signing with a professional organization, to being one of the very few NBA G league players who is having their jersey sold online,” Gary explains.

With a profound passion for the game, Gary works hard every day to become a better version of himself. His plans include playing in the NBA summer league tournament and preparing for his second season in the NBA G League. He envisions a prosperous future as an integral part of the team’s success. There is a wide belief that Chivichyan will be a significant player for the Clippers organization moving forward on and off the court.
