Vice President of Armenian parliament from the Armenia Alliance opposition bloc, Ishkhan Saghatelyan, on Friday called on citizens to join a rally on April 5 to discuss the country’s security issues

YEREVAN (UrduPoint News / Sputnik – 01st April, 2022) Vice President of Armenian parliament from the Armenia Alliance opposition bloc, Ishkhan Saghatelyan, on Friday called on citizens to join a rally on April 5 to discuss the country’s security issues.

“I call on the Armenian citizens to take to the streets, to gather at the Freedom Square on April 5 at 6:30 p.m. (14:30 GMT) to discuss how we can preserve Artsakh (the Armenian toponym for Nagorno-Karabakh) and protect Armenia,” Saghatelyan said at a parliament meeting.

Saghatelyan accused the ruling party of Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan of abusing the extraordinary parliament meeting, which was expected to discuss the security threats in Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh, but instead pushed for amendments to local governance law that would expand its power.

Hostilities flared up in Nagorno-Karabakh in late September 2020 after a relative lull in the long-standing conflict between Armenian and Azerbaijani forces. A declaration of ceasefire was mediated by Russia on November 9 and Russian peacekeepers were deployed to the region to monitor the truce.

Artsakh slams UK for blatant support for Azerbaijan amid its fresh aggression

Panorama
Armenia – March 31 2022

Artsakh’s (Nagorno-Karabakh) State Minister Artak Beglaryan on Wednesday denounced the UK for its blatant support for Azerbaijan amid the latter’s fresh aggression in Artsakh.

Britain’s Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for the Armed Forces James Heappey visited Baku on Wednesday to discuss, among other things, “unresolved issues” between Armenia and Azerbaijan, while the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict was discussed with the Azerbaijani ambassador in the UK.

“What does the UK have to do with Azerbaijan’s latest aggression in Artsakh and Russia’s security guarantees?” Beglaryan said in a statement.

“We saw Britain’s blatant support for Azerbaijan during the Azerbaijani-Turkish aggression in 2020. Even now, during the occupation of Parukh and Karaglukh, Britain does not hide its strategic support, and we can only guess how much and what kind of real support is on the other side of the veil,” he noted.

Beglaryan states such support is aimed at strengthening the positions of the Azerbaijani-Turkish tandem in the region as well as “striking a blow to the vital interests of Russia”, as a result of which the life and security of the Artsakh Armenians are violated.

“While human rights and democracy, “extolled” by the West, are not at all important in such dirty geopolitical games,” the minister added.

Abrahamyan: Azerbaijan has occupied some 1,200 hectares of land in Artsakh region

Panorama
Armenia – March 31 2022

Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) has found itself in a complicated political and diplomatic situation, Armenian MP Tigran Abrahamyan of the opposition With Honor faction told a news conference on Thursday, referring to the latest Azerbaijani aggression.

The lawmaker states that the Azerbaijani troops have occupied quite a large territory of the Askeran region of the Artsakh Republic after breaching the ceasefire on March 23.

“According to rough estimates, it’s about 1,100-1,200 hectares of land, but the issue should not be considered only in a territorial context, because through the invasion Azerbaijan seeks to enhance its positional advantage as well as to exercise control over the livelihood of the parts of Artsakh which are currently under our control,” Abrahamyan said.

He claims that the Armenian government has not taken any appropriate measures in the current situation.

“Political statements or assessments of the situation have no deterrent effect. We have to state that Armenia has not taken appropriate actions within its capacities and has not ensured the security of Artsakh Armenians,” Abrahamyan stressed.
