According to Minasyan, he and Markaryan are suspected of distributing money to the participants of one of the opposition rallies.

YEREVAN, MAY 26, ARMENPRESS. Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan participated in the Eurasian Economic Forum in Bishkek via video conference, ARMENPRESS was informed from the Office of the Prime Minister.

The event was also remotely attended by the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin, the Prime Minister of Belarus Roman Golovchenko, the President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Japarov, the President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, the Chairman of the Eurasian Economic Commission Mikhail Myasnikovich. The forum was chaired by Alexander Shokhin, President of the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs.

In his speech, Prime Minister Pashinyan greeted the leaders of the countries participating in the forum, heads of delegations, and all those present, expressing hope that the successful holding of the event and the agreements to be reached within its framework will contribute to the further progress of Eurasian integration.

“As for the service sector, the services are really becoming a generator of new points for the development of economic cooperation between the countries of our Union. The role of this sector in the economy is constantly growing and certain types of services, as factors for production, have a significant impact on the competitiveness of goods, industries and economies. In this respect, the most important task of Eurasian integration is to ensure the free movement of services. This issue is being solved, including through the liberalization of the sector, the formation of a common market for services, which in turn expands the opportunities for business activation. We can say that the level of free movement of services is a unique indicator of integration.

The development of the trade of services is conditioned, among other things, by the development of scientific and technical progress in the field of cross-border trade, technological changes, which in itself is a tool for overcoming “geographical segregation” and is relevant for Armenia.

In this regard, special attention should be paid to the development of telecommunications and information technologies, guaranteeing their equal availability.

In this context, a key area of cooperation is the consolidation of the efforts of the IT communities of the Member States to actively develop the high-tech sectors of the economy and to fully implement the Union’s digital agenda. Within the framework of the implementation of the digital agenda, it is necessary to consistently promote the initiatives aimed at deepening the integration processes and receiving direct benefits for the economies and citizens of the EEU member states.

As it is known, technological innovation is also beneficial for the provision of services. The age of information and digital technologies increases the international competitiveness of countries. And this is especially true for small countries like Armenia, which have limited influence on world processes due to geographical and geopolitical constraints. Information technologies provide a level playing field for all players, regardless of their position or capabilities. This is the reason why the Armenian Government considers the IT sector one of the bases for economic development.

We aim to expand our capabilities to become a country that produces, delivers high-quality, intelligence-based products and services at the heart of which will be the creative human capital.

In general, new technologies are an opportunity for economic breakthrough, a challenge for those who want to keep up with the progress of humanity. This sphere is of strategic importance for Armenia, as it is one of the unique branches, which does not require ports, access to the sea, rich mineral resources for development. It requires human capital, and that is the resource with which Armenia has always stood out. From this point of view, we also pay great attention to the development of young people’s skills through the teaching of digital technologies.”

In response to the question of moderator of the forum Alexander Shokhin, Prime Minister Pashinyan noted that the Government of our country is making all efforts to make Armenia attractive especially for investments in the sphere of information technologies, and investments in all spheres in general. “We now see that there is a certain flow of IT specialists to Armenia, we understand the context, we try to create conditions for these movements within the EEU to serve the further development of the Union’s integration processes, since it is a common market, common area. In general, we can say that we show that we have achieved one of the main goals of the EEU, because we are now practically implementing the principles of free movement of labor, goods and services. I hope that this will become a usual thing in the Eurasian Economic Area, which is, in fact, the goal that was set in front of the organization at the time of its creation. So this is a very important nuance to emphasize the effectiveness of the Eurasian Economic Union.”

Deputy Prime Minister Mher Grigoryan also delivered a video message at the forum.

YEREVAN, MAY 26, ARMENPRESS. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan hosted the delegation led by President of Montenegro Milo Đukanović, who is in Armenia on an official visit, ARMENPRESS was informed from the Office of the Prime Minister.

Welcoming the guests in Yerevan, the Prime Minister said, “We attach great importance to the relations with Montenegro, I am sure that your visit will give a new impetus to the further development of our relations. I was pleased to note that, in fact, there are long-established relations between our capitals; in 1978, a memorandum of understanding was signed between our capitals. I hope that in this new environment, when our countries have independence, we will be able to properly develop interstate relations and deepen economic relations. Admittedly, we do not have much to boast about today. Dear Mr. President, Dear colleagues, I once again welcome you in our capital and I am sure you will have a good and impressive visit.”

In his turn, Milo Đukanović thanked for the warm reception and noted, “I am very happy to be here, because as I told the Minister of Economy and the Mayor of Yerevan, at school age I was able to come here from Belgrade in the sidelines of the exchange program between Titograd and Yerevan and spend some time in Yerevan. I have very good memories. Unfortunately, during this period I have not had the opportunity to come to your beautiful country, I am glad to be here. As you said, the first cooperation was when our countries were part of larger states, the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia. Now we are in a new political reality, we are independent states, and I believe that both of us are interested and able to deepen this cooperation. Montenegro is a small country and I think small countries can, need it more urgently or it’s more important for them to be politically active. Our main foreign policy goal is

European, Euro-Atlantic integration. Of course, we are following the developments in your region, we want to have close cooperation with the Eurasian region as well, because there are already traditional relations between our countries.”

The interlocutors discussed issues related to the development of cooperation in the field of economy, in particular, information technologies, tourism, agriculture. The parties expressed readiness to make efforts to expand business ties, trade turnover and facilitate the implementation of joint investment programs.

Nikol Pashinyan and Milo Đukanović exchanged views on the processes taking place in the South Caucasus. The Prime Minister presented the position of the Armenian side on the peaceful settlement of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict. The sides also made a reference to the processes taking place in the international arena.

Police Chief Carl Povilaitis

After 32 years in law enforcement serving the City of Glendale, Police Chief Carl Povilaitis announced his plans to retire in September of this year. Chief Povilaitis has served as the Glendale Police Department’s Chief since 2018.

“It has been my distinct honor and privilege to end my career as the Chief of the Glendale Police Department,” said Chief Povilaitis.

Chief Povilaitis served in a number of capacities within the Police Department since being sworn in as an officer in 1991.  His dedication and professionalism to the entire workforce is readily recognizable in the department.

Throughout his tenure, Chief Povilaitis has participated in and crafted innovative programs, initiatives, and strategies that have made the Glendale Police Department a true 21st-century police department. These include programs that have allowed for real-time crime analysis; a regional DNA and firearms laboratory in collaboration with other city, county, and federal partners; and an area-based service model to improve the quality of life for residents and businesses through accountability, professional responsibility, and strategic utilization of both sworn and professional police resources, to name a few.

During his law enforcement career, Povilaitis served as a patrol officer and sergeant that included oversight of the joint Glendale – Burbank air operations. He was appointed by the City Council to serve on the Bob Hope Airport Commission from 1999 through 2009, where he held the office of President, Vice President, and Secretary.  Within the police department, he served as a lieutenant, captain, and deputy chief, becoming the police chief in 2018.

“I am proud of the dedication and professionalism of the entire department. Over the last few years, policing faced significant and historic challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic. The Glendale Police Department weathered these challenges while providing top-notch services to the community,” said Chief Povilaitis.

“I’ve been deeply committed to the police department, our community, and public safety throughout my entire career.  There never seems to be the right time to announce a retirement when you are so committed, but, with the recent published reports ranking Glendale as one of the safest cities in the United States, it couldn’t have been at a better time. I love our community and our city, and I’m confident this great organization will continue to thrive,” he added.

Chief Povilaitis will continue to serve as Police Chief through September 2022, committing to the City a smooth transition while a search is conducted for his successor.

“Chief Povilaitis has done an incredible job leading our police department,” said Glendale Mayor Ardy Kassakhian. “He has supported many programs that have better connected law enforcement with our community, and we are a stronger and safer city thanks to his leadership. It’s important to note that Chief Povilaitis has stepped up and led us through difficult times, both for our nation and for our community. Whether it was the COVID-19 pandemic or the many demonstrations in our city, Chief Povilaitis prioritized bringing our community closer together.”

“It has been an honor working alongside Chief Povilaitis and I want to thank him for his strong commitment to duty and service,” said City Manager Roubik Golanian.  “The City of Glendale is proud of its high levels of public safety and strong community bonds that have been built during some trying times. He will be missed, and we wish him the best of luck in all of his future endeavors.”
