YEREVAN, 24 JANUARY, ARMENPRESS. The financial sanctions that the United States intends to impose on Russia in the event of an escalation of the situation in Ukraine will be more severe than the 2014 sanctions, ARMENPRESS reports the White House informed.

RIA Novosti reports that during a briefing a senior official of the US Presidential Administration stated that the current change in the value of the ruble reflects the importance of the economic sanctions that the United States is ready to apply. He reminded that after the unification of Crimea in 2014, the Russian ruble depreciated by 50% due to sanctions against the Russian Federation, and the Central Bank of Russia spent 25% of its reserve fund to maintain currency stability.

Today, as international tensions over Ukraine deepen, the Russian ruble continues to fall due to growing geopolitical risks. According to Russian media, 1 dollar costs 79 rubles, and 1 euro – 89 rubles.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan is self-isolating after testing positive for the coronavirus, his government said on Wednesday.

“The prime minister of Armenia took a coronavirus test, which came back positive,” the Armenian government said in a statement.

It said Pashinyan was asymptomatic and self-isolating as required, and would continue to work remotely.

Pashinyan and his family also had coronavirus in June 2020.

The ex-Soviet republic with a population of around three million people has registered 355,662 coronavirus cases and 8,033 deaths since the start of the pandemic.

Armenia has faced a period of instability after accepting defeat and suffering territorial losses in late 2020 in a war with arch-foe Azerbaijan over the exclave of Nagorno-Karabakh.

Pashinyan faced pressure at home over the controversial truce with Baku as protesters staged rallies and demanded his resignation.

In the summer, Pashinyan called for snap parliamentary polls that were won by his party but discontent over the war continues to simmer.

Last week, Armenia’s President Armen Sarkisian announced that was resigning from his post — a largely ceremonial role — over a lack of influence during times of national crisis.

Armenia and the UAE have reached an agreement on large-scale renewable energy projects

A variety of practical agreements were signed during President Armen Sarkissian’s working visit to the UAE (United Arab Emirates), particularly in the sector of renewable energy. The “Ayg-1” venture for the development of a 200-MW (megawatt) photovoltaic power facility in the area of renewable power in Armenia has already been launched by the Emirati firm Masdar, one of several leading global firms in the area of renewable energy. The agreement was arrived at in 2019 during President Sarkissian’s visit to the UAE (United Arab Emirates). Armen Sarkissian said at the time that the program was just the start of a very long journey and that they might accomplish a lot more together.

During a recent business visit to the UAE, Armenia’s President met with Masdar CEO Mohamed Jamil Al Ramah and agreed to build an additional 200-megawatt solar photovoltaic facility in Armenia. Armenia’s plans for a 400-megawatt solar power facility will necessitate significant investment. They are also strategically important for strengthening the country’s energy system’s security, independence, and diversification. These initiatives will also contribute to Armenia being more environmentally friendly.

During his tour to the UAE, President talked about the prospects of large-scale wind energy investments with Khaldoon Khalifa Al Mubarak, Mubadala Investment Company’s Chief Executive Officer, in particular the construction of a 500-megawatt plant. Armenia, according to President Sarkissian, has a great potential for green energy resources.

Wizz Air Abu Dhabi is going to begin running flights to Yerevan in the near future, according to an agreement struck during a working tour to the United Arab Emirates. The Republic of Armenia’s President working visit to the UAE is a practical step toward closer ties with the Arab world as well as increased cooperation.

Masdar is also working with the Iraqi government. They came to an agreement last year to develop solar PV power facilities in Iraq. The plants will have a total capacity of 1GW and will be spread around the country in four separate places. A 450MW solar PV facility in the Dhi Qar governorate in southern Iraq will be the largest. Masdar is also planning to build 2 solar farms in Ramadi. One of the farms is going to have a capacity of 100MW, while the other will have a capacity of 250MW. The two remaining projects, each with a 100MW installed capacity, will be placed in Mosul and Amarah, respectively.

“This agreement enhances the existing strong link between the United Arab Emirates and the Republic of Iraq, and will allow information exchange between our two great nations,” Masdar CEO Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi stated.

He noted that the respective consultations and discussions are underway.

"Our faction cannot nominate a presidential candidate with his votes alone. I do not claim that there will be a [presidential] candidate [from the parliamentary]. I am not mentioning names," Mamijanyan added.

Azerbaijan Prevents Armenians from Visiting Dadivank Monastery

Jan 26 2022

01/26/2022 Nagorno-Karabakh (International Christian Concern) – Azerbaijan continues to prevent Armenian pilgrims from visiting the Dadivank Monastery, where Christians seeking to visit have been banned since May. Five clergymen remain at the monastery with Russian peacekeepers staying nearby.

For months, the monks have carried out their activities and purposes in the presence of the peacekeepers, including prayer, conducting services and celebrating liturgies.  The Primate of the Artsakh Diocese, Bishop Vrtanes Abrahamyan, commented that it was unclear why Azerbaijan continues to forbid visitors as the area is not in a forbidden zone. He said, He said, “[The Azerbaijanis] do not permit it and that is it, without a reason. They do not say anything. The peacekeepers are in the territory of the monastery. They live together. Of course the rooms are different. They are separated: they are military, while the clergymen perform spiritual service. What the Azerbaijani side thinks is a secondary question. We are doing what we have to do.”

Armenians fondly recall the times of baptisms, blessings and larger corporate worship at Dadivank. Now, like many other cultural and physical aspects of life in and near Artsakh, visitation to Dadivank Monastery is but a memory. Azerbaijani aggression has limited the way of Armenian life and Christian culture.
