Wrestling: Armenia’s Artur Aleksanyan makes it to the final of Tokyo Olympics

Armenian Greco-Roman wrestler Artur Aleksanyan made it to the final of the men’s 97 kg event at Tokyo Olympics after defeating Mohammad Hadi Saravi of Iran in the semi-final.

He will now compete for Olympic gold.

Artur Aleksanyan is Rio Olympic Champion, three-time world and five-time European champion.

The Armenian wrestler will fight Russia’s Musa Yevloyev in the final, which will take place on August 3.

Olympic champion Artur Aleksanyan (97 kg) scored his third victory in the Greco-Roman wrestling tournament at the 32nd Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo and made it to the final, securing Armenia’s first medal at Tokyo 2020.

In the semi-final, champion of Rio 2016, world’s multiple and Europe’s five-time champion, winner of the European Games Artur Aleksanyan competed with 23-year-old Iranian wrestler Mohamadhadi Saravi and won 4-1.

During the final to be held on August 3, Aleksanyan’s opponent will be world and Europe’s two-time champion, 28-year-old Russian wrestler Musa Yekloyev.

Geghamasar community leader’s deputy presents situation in bordering villages of Gegharkunik province

VARDENIS, JULY 28, ARMENPRESS. Deputy head of Geghamasar community of Armenia’s Gegharkunik province Vardan Margaryan says he didn’t notice panic today among the residents of border communities connected with the escalation of the situation in the border by the Azerbaijani side.

“I just came from the meeting with the locals, everything is normal. There haven’t been shots in the direction of villages, the shots were fired in the positions, they have been heard, but it doesn’t change anything among the people”, he told reporters.

On July 28, at around 03:40, the Azerbaijani armed forces launched a provocation and violated the ceasefire in the northern-eastern section of the Armenia-Azerbaijan border. Three Armenian servicemen have been killed, four others have been wounded in action. The Azerbaijani attacking forces have been repelled to their initial positions, suffering losses. The sides have reached an agreement on ceasefire at the mediation of the Russian side.

2 more bodies of fallen servicemen retrieved from battle zones, says Artsakh

YEREVAN, JULY 28, ARMENPRESS. The rescuers of Artsakh have found and retrieved 2 more bodies of Armenian servicemen during the search operations in the battle zones, in particular in Varanda (Fizuli), the State Emergency Service of Artsakh said.

“They will be identified after forensic examination”, the statement says.

Since the end of the 2020 Artsakh War, a total of 1618 bodies have been found during the search operations.

The President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin held a meeting with the permanent members of the Security Council, discussing the situation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border, inter alia, ARMENPRESS reports Dmitry Peskov, press secretary of the Russian President, told the reporters.

”During the consultations the participants discussed issues referring to the social-economic development of Russia. In addition, issues of international agenda were addressed, including the situation in Afghanistan, as well as on the Azerbaijani-Armenian border”, Peskov said.

The Azerbaijani armed forces attacked Armenia’s borders in the section of Verin Shorzha-Sotk on July 28. MoD Armenia informed that as a result of the Azerbaijani provocation 3 Armenian servicemen were killed, 4 were injured.

Lithuania to send 27.5 thousand doses of AstraZeneca vaccine to Armenia

YEREVAN, JULY 28, ARMENPRESS. Lithuania will donate thousands of doses of AstraZeneca vaccine to Ukraine, Moldova and Armenia, ARMENPRESS reports the Lithuanian National Radio and Television informed.

In particular, on July 28, the Lithuanian government approved the decision to send 27,500 doses of vaccine to Armenia. 131 thousand and 26 thousand 500 doses will be sent to Ukraine and Moldova, respectively.

”No incidents have been reported in other sections of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border. The Armed Forces of Armenia keep full control of the situation”, reads the statement.

UN expresses concerns over escalated situation on Armenia-Azerbaijan border

The UN is concerned over the rising escalation of situation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border, ARMENPRESS reports Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General told the reporters, commenting on the military operations unleashed by the Azerbaijani side on July 28.

‘’We are following the information about the tense situation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border with increasing concern, including the recent incident about which we informed today. Though the UN cannot verify the information, we urge the sides to demonstrate restraint and avoid any activity that can lead to escalation and solve the issue through dilogue’’, Haq said.

YEREVAN, JULY 28, ARMENPRESS. The Armenian Գovernment plans to purchase Sinopharm (China) and Pfizer / BioNTech (Germany-US-China) vaccines against coronavirus, ARMEPRESS reports, the relevant issue is included in the agenda of the July 29 sitting of the Government.

50 thousand vaccines for 25 thousand citizens will be purchased. The Government will allocate nearly 3.5 billion AMD for the acquisition of the vaccines.

At the moment Russian Sputnik V, British-Swedish AstraZeneca and Chinese Coronavac vaccines are available for the citizens of Armenia.
