Official Ankara on Thursday was quick to respond to the demand for Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s resignation voiced by Armenia’s military top brass, with Turkey’s foreign minister Mevlut Cavusoglu condemning “the coup attempt in Armenia.”

Speaking in Hungary’s capital, Budapest, where he is on an official visit, Cavusoglu said Turkey “opposes any types of coup, not matter what. Turkey condemn the coup attempt in Armenia,” reported al Monitor.

“We are against coups and coup attempts wherever in the world,” added Cavusoglu, saying that the Caucasus has gained a chance for stability and peace that must not be missed.

Turkish President’s Communications Director Fahrettin Altun said Turkey was “deeply concerned” over the developments in Armenia.

“We view the unfolding situation as a coup attempt and unequivocally condemn it. Turkey always sides with democracy and the free will of citizens – wherever in the world they may come under attack,” Altun wrote on Twitter.

MPs investigate mutiny and AWOL at Armenian military base

YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 24, ARMENPRESS. The Ministry of Defense is reporting an unusual case of what appears to be mutiny in an unspecified military base of the Armenian Armed Forces. The incident took place on February 23.

According to a news release issued by the military, some servicemen mutinized and refused to be dispatched to their permanent deployment locations, while some other servicemen exploited the incident and went AWOL. 

“Disturbances began on the territory of the military base, during which a group of soldiers – incited by their families who had gathered outside – refused to be taken to their permanent deployment locations, while others exploited the situation and voluntarily left the territory of the military base,” the defense ministry said.

Military police are investigating.

The command of the military base has ordered an internal investigation.

The military said it “strongly condemns” the incident and called on citizens to refrain from inciting such actions considering the active martial law.

Russia reports over 11,700 COVID-19 cases in past day

YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 24, ARMENPRESS. Russia’s COVID-19 case tally rose by 11,749 in the past day reaching 4,200,902, TASS reports citing the anti-coronavirus crisis center.

For a second day in the row fewer than 12,000 daily coronavirus cases were recorded.

In relative terms, the growth rate stood at 0.3%.

Microsoft adds Armenian to its Translator service

YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 24, ARMENPRESS. On the occasion of the International Mother Language Day, held annually on February 21, Microsoft has added nine new languages to its Microsoft Translator, including the Armenian language.

Microsoft Translator text translation is now available in 83 languages.

The company stated that nearly 7 million people around the world speak in Armenian.

Members of Sasna Tsrer sentenced to prison terms for 2016 Yerevan hostage crisis

YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 24, ARMENPRESS. The ringleaders of the 2016 Yerevan police station attack were sentenced to prison terms today by Judge Mesrop Makyan of the Yerevan Court of General Jurisdiction.

Pavel Manukyan, the leader of the group known as the Sasna Tsrer (Daredevils of Sassoun), was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment. Another member of the syndicate, Smbat Barseghyan, was sentenced to 25 years on aggravated murder charges for the killing of the on-duty police officers during the ambush. Eight others received sentences ranging from 4 to 9 years each.

Two years after they ambushed the police station, the Sasna Tsrer became a political party and unsucessfully ran for parliament amid their ongoing trial.

Artsakh reports 1 new case of COVID-19 in past day

STEPANAKERT, FEBRUARY 24, ARMENPRESS. 1 new case of COVID-19 has been confirmed in Artsakh over the past one day, the ministry of healthcare reported.

50 COVID-19 tests were conducted on February 23.

2 infected patients receive treatment in a hospital, the other confirmed cases continue treatment at home.

The total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Artsakh has reached 2381.

COVID-19: Armenia reports 273 new cases over past day

YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 24, ARMENPRESS. 273 new cases of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) have been confirmed in Armenia in the past one day, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 170,945, the National Center for Disease Control and Prevention said today.

188 patients have recovered in one day. The total number of recoveries has reached 162,517.

4 patients have died, raising the death toll to 3175.

2993 tests were conducted in the past one day.

The number of active cases is 4445.

The number of patients who had coronavirus but died from other disease has reached 808 (2 new such cases).

Armenia’s Representative before ECHR meets with Swedish, Lithuanian and Polish Ambassadors

On 23 February the Representative of the Republic of Armenia before the ECtHR Yeghishe Kirakosyan and the Deputy of the Representative of the Republic of Armenia before the ECtHR Liparit Drmeyan met H.E. Mrs. Inga Stanytė-Toločkienė, Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Republic of Lithuania to the Republic of Armenia, H.E. Mr Patrick Svensson, Ambassador of Sweden to Republic of Armenia and H.E. Mr. Paweł Cieplak, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Poland to the Republic of Armenia, Mr. Kirakosyan’s Office told Armenpress.

During the meeting, the ambassadors were informed about the human rights violations unleashed by Azerbaijan during the 44-day war. One of the key topics of discussion was the measures taken by the Representative’s office to protect the rights of the captives currently held in Azerbaijan. In addition, the ambassadors’ attention was drawn to the fact that Azerbaijani government blatantly disregards its obligations under the international human rights treaties, namely the European Convention on Human Rights

Mr. Kirakosyan emphasized that from the very beginning of the war a number of interim measure requests have been submitted to the European Court of Human Rights to protect the rights of prisoners of war and civilian captives. He further elaborated on the interstate application lodged against Azerbaijan with regard to the violations of rights guaranteed under the European Convention on Human Rights.

Members of the meeting also discussed the results registered by the Constitutional Reform Commission and further actions. The ambassadors offered their support in the implementation of further constitutional reforms.

Armenia most popular direction for Russians

YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 24, ARMENPRESS. Following the announcement about the restoration of regular flights, Armenia has become the most popular direction for Russians, ARMENPRESS reports Ria Novosti informs that demand for air tickets to Armenia is 1.5-fold higher than in the previous two months.

Ria Novosti notes that the price of the air tickets of Moscow-Yerevan is twice higher compared to that of the previous year, rising from 6160 rubles to 13.622 rubles.

Kyrgyzstan is the second most demanded direction for Russians, while Turkey is the 3rd. Moldova, Azerbaijan, Belarus, the UAE, Egypt and Ukraine are included in the top 10 list of preferred directions for Russians.

Armenian President Sends congratulatory message to Georgian PM
