Pasadena schools to offer Armenian dual language program next year

Pasadena Star, CA
April 6 2020

Pasadena Unified will offer a new Armenian dual language immersion program for high school students in the 2020-2021 school year, according to a news release from the district.

Dual immersion programs aim for biliteracy by immersing students in both languages as they’re taught multiple subjects. Proponents say Pasadena Unified’s offering of Armenian is the first for that language in the United States.

April 6 marks the start of registration for the program, which will be offered at the Blair School , where the district houses its International Baccalaureate classes.

The program will offer four levels of Armenian language classes, subject to minimum student enrollment. As it expands, the district plans to offer courses in Armenian literature, history and culture.

It will be limited to 250 students in its first year, the Friday news release says, and if it does not meet enrollment projections, the course offerings are subject to change.

The district currently offers similar dual language immersion programs in French, Mandarin and Spanish.

“I am thrilled with the Pasadena Unified School District’s vote of approval to establish an Armenian Dual Language Immersion program at Blair School, the first of its kind in the U.S.” said Arsine Shirvanian, a community member who advocated for the program.

A welcoming event and program will be planned when schools are able to reopen, once the coronavirus crisis is resolved.

Unnecessary optimism may harm: PAP deputy on Armenian PM’s statement about possibility to return to regular life

Aysor, Armenia
April 6 2020

The 11 new cases of coronavirus are inspiring hope, but it is necessary to follow the dynamics tomorrow, the day after it and the following days too, deputy from Prosperous Armenia faction Sergey Bagratyan told Aysor.am, referring to the idea voiced by Armenia’s PM about possibility to return to regular life from Monday if the restrictions of Commandant’s office be followed during the week.

“It is possible to think about returning the regular pace of life in only 4-5 days after new cases are not being recorded. Today’s 11 cases are a good news, but it should not raise unnecessary enthusiasm. It is necessary to be cautious. Probably the PM tried to share his delight, it is clear, he is emotional, let God bring his optimism to reality,” the deputy said, warning again that it is necessary to be very cautious taking into consideration that the tempos of the disease in the world are reducing and then growing again.

“We must not hurry not to make a mistake,” he said.

Referring to the damages coronavirus caused to economy, the deputy said, “Naturally we would like the economy to restore a day earlier but we have an issue. What is the dilemma? Healthcare and economy. I mean if we do not pay necessary attention to the healthcare, we will have losses in the economy and the opposite, having issues in the economy we will not manage to fund the healthcare sector. This dilemma must be settled in parallel,” Bagratyan said, adding that the economic collapse may result in collapse of the healthcare.

23:09, 06.04.2020

All children can’t be provided with social support because there are many children of socially secured families in Armenia. This is what Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan said today in response to a citizen who had asked why the government only provides support to children whose parents are unemployed.

“The government currently has a problem with identifying children who need social support is trying to find out information about the parents of the particular children when it allocates funds. Unfortunately, not everything is digitized in Armenia. We’ll consider the expansion of the program, and if there are justifications, I don’t rule out the expansion of the program,” Pashinyan said.
