The Armenian Patriarch of Turkey, Patrik Sahak II, has joined the discussion over the potential re-transformation of the Hagia Sofia into a mosque, voicing his support for the proposal in a chain of tweets on Saturday.

“The Hagia Sophia should be opened to worship,” he said, stating that it is big enough for that purpose while suggesting a space for Christians. “Let the world applaud our religious peace and maturity. May Hagia Sophia become a symbol of the peace of humanity in our era.”

Sahak further stated that humanity was praying for such unity and so suggested sharing the dome of Hagia Sophia. “Even though our faiths are different, don’t we believe in the same God?”

Having been a place of worship for Christians for 1,000 years and another 500 for Muslims, he claims that Hagia Sophia won’t be minding it.

“Hagia Sophia was built with the labor of ten thousand works at an astronomical cost,” he said pointing out that for over 1,500 years numerous repairs have been done on the iconic building by the Fatih Sultan Foundation. He stressed that their aim was to preserve it as a place of worship. “Not just a museum.”

He said it would be more fitting as a place of worship where believers could kneel down in prayer in awe of the structure, rather than a touristic site full of visitors rushing around.

The Hagia Sophia, one of the world’s most significant historical and cultural heritage sites, was built in the sixth century at the time of the Christian Byzantine Empire and served as the seat of the Greek Orthodox Church. It was converted into an imperial mosque following the Ottoman conquest of Istanbul in 1453. The structure was converted into a museum in 1935, during Turkey’s period of strictly secular single-party rule. However, in the time since, there has been much discussion over converting it back into a mosque, with public demand to restore it as a place of worship gaining traction on social media.

The issue of Hagia Sophia is one that caused much tension between Turkey and Greece recently.

YEREVAN, JUNE 12, ARMENPRESS. Armenian minister of healthcare Arsen Torosyan says it’s too early to speak about the decline in the number of confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

“It’s still too early to talk about the decline. We had days when more than 700 cases were confirmed, today as well the number of confirmed cases is over 600, which is not a low figure for our country having such capacities. Our actions should continue more intensively to restrain these numbers. Restraining the numbers with a collective behavior only will solve the problem”, the minister told reporters in the Parliament.

Torosyan said as the numbers increase, the number of patients in serious and critical condition also increase. “The mortality rate of critical and serious cases is very high, large numbers lead to high mortality, and all actions should be directed to curbing the numbers, not to increasing the capacities only”, he said.

According to the latest data, the number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Armenia has reached 15,281, out of which 5,639 patients have already recovered. The number of active cases stands at 9,298. The death toll has risen to 258.

YEREVAN, JUNE 12, ARMENPRESS. The Armenian citizens should accept that the new cases of the novel coronavirus show how everyone followed the rules of wearing a face mask, disinfecting hands and keeping a social distance, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said at the extraordinary meeting of the Cabinet today, reminding that according to the latest data more than 600 new cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in the country.

“When the number of new cases is declining to some extent, we witness a drastic decline in the level of following the anti-epidemic rules. This situation is directly linked with our general public behavior”, he said, adding that the respective agencies should seriously deal with this issue and identify the people who say that this disease doesn’t exist. “We need to understand their goal and ties. This can make us draw some conclusions, and our agencies with operative capacities should deal with this”, he said.

Pashinyan said all state agencies should continue presenting the people the coronavirus prevention rules on a daily basis.

According to him, the number of patients in serious and critical condition is directly linked with the total number of confirmed cases: the higher the confirmed cases, the higher the number of patients in serious and critical condition, and thus, the higher the death toll. “75% of the cases show no symptoms, but with our statistics we are indirectly increasing the number of serious, critical cases and that of deaths”, he said.

According to the latest data, the number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Armenia has reached 15,281, out of which 5,639 patients have already recovered. The number of active cases stands at 9,298. The death toll has risen to 258.

COVID-19: European Commission recommends partial and gradual lifting of travel restrictions to EU

 13:04,

YEREVAN, JUNE 12, ARMENPRESS. The European Commission recommends to Schengen Member States and Schengen Associated States to lift internal border controls by 15 June 2020 and to prolong the temporary restriction on non-essential travel into the EU until 30 June 2020; and sets out an approach to progressively lifting the restriction afterwards, the EU Delegation to Armenia told Armenpress.

Given that the health situation in certain third countries remains critical, the Commission does not propose a general lifting of the travel restriction at this stage. The restriction should be lifted for countries selected together by Member States, based on a set of principles and objective criteria including the health situation, the ability to apply containment measures during travel, and reciprocity considerations, taking into account data from relevant sources such as ECDC and WHO.

For countries towards which the restriction remains in place, the Commission proposes to enlarge the categories of permitted travellers to include, for instance, international students.

The Commission is also issuing guidance to Member States to ensure that the resumption of visa operations abroad is well coordinated with the gradual lifting of the travel restrictions.

Commissioner for Home Affairs, Ylva Johansson, said: “Following the lifting of all internal border checks inside the Union, we are proposing a clear and flexible approach towards removing restrictions on travel to the EU starting on 1 July. International travel is key for tourism and business, and for family and friends reconnecting. While we will all have to remain careful, the time has come to make concrete preparations for lifting restrictions with countries whose health situation is similar to the EU’s and for resuming visa operations”.
