YEREVAN, AUGUST 4, ARMENPRESS. Speaker of Parliament of Armenia Ararat Mirzoyan has offered condolences to the people of Lebanon over the deadly explosion that hit Beirut on Tuesday.

“Together with the brotherly people of Lebanon, we mourn the deaths of the victims of the Beirut blasts,” Mirzoyan said on Facebook.

The blast erupted at a port warehouse in the Lebanese capital on Tuesday. More than 100 people are dead and 4000 injured. 

The enormous blast was reportedly heard as far away as Cyprus, some 150 miles away from the port.

Beirut authorities have traced the blast to a massive stash of explosive ammonium nitrate in a warehouse at the port. The cause of the explosion is under investigation.

YEREVAN, AUGUST 5, ARMENPRESS. Armenia is considering various scenarios on supplying Lebanon with humanitarian aid after the massive Beirut explosion which left more than 100 people dead and over 4000 injured, the Armenian foreign ministry said.

Foreign ministry spokesperson Anna Naghdalyan said on Facebook that massive destruction happened as a result of the explosion in Armenian-populated areas and elsewhere in the Lebanese capital. She said that the Haigazian University building was also damaged.

“As of this moment, together with our partners we are considering and assessing various scenarios of providing the brotherly people of Lebanon with targeted and first-necessity aid,” Naghdalyan said.

She said that according to latest information 3 Lebanese-Armenians have been killed in the blast. 100 Lebanese-Armenians were injured.

Naghdalyan didn’t rule out that the death toll may climb further.

Artsakh reports 1 new COVID-19 case in last 24 hours

YEREVAN, AUGUST 5, ARMENPRESS. 1 new COVID-19 case has been confirmed in Artsakh over the past 24 hours, the country’s health authorities reported.

The virus has been confirmed in a resident from the capital city of Stepanakert. The patient is a direct contact of a previously confirmed case.

8 patients recovered over the past day in Artsakh.

The total cumulative number of confirmed cases in the country is 248, with 189 recoveries so far. No deaths have been reported from the coronavirus, although one person infected with the virus has died, but the death happened from other pre-existing conditions, authorities said.

6343 tests were conducted in total.

Armenia reports 288 new COVID-19 cases in last 24 hours

YEREVAN, AUGUST 5, ARMENPRESS. 288 new cases of COVID-19 were confirmed in the last 24 hours, the National Center for Disease Control and Prevention of Armenia said. The total cumulative number of confirmed cases has reached 39586, with 30850 recoveries.

478 people recovered from the disease over the past day.

2 people died, raising the death toll to 770.

This number doesn’t include the deaths of 228 other individuals infected with the virus who died from other pre-existing conditions, according to authorities.

The latest fatalities both had underlying health conditions.

1848 tests were done over the past 24 hours. The number of the total tests is 170012.

YEREVAN, AUGUST 5, ARMENPRESS. The power of the Beirut blast is being compared to the magnitude of a powerful earthquake, Beirut-based Aztag Daily’s Editor-in-Chief Shahan Kandaharian told ARMENPRESS.

“It was a very powerful blast”, he said. “Even during the years of the civil war a blast like this hadn’t happened.”

Kandaharian says the Armenian community has suffered significant material damages.

“Residential homes and community institutions have been damaged. The office of Aztag has also suffered damages, windows and doors were knocked out, property and equipment are damaged. A nearby radio station, a party headquarters, all are damaged. The situation in the country is very difficult in socio-economic terms, especially in times of the coronavirus pandemic. Hospitals are overcrowded, they were even forced to conduct surgeries without anesthesia,” he said, describing the horrifying aftermath of the blast.

YEREVAN, AUGUST 5, ARMENPRESS. President Armen Sarkissian has addressed a telegram to his Lebanese counterpart Michel Aoun to express condolences over the deadly Beirut blast, Sarkissian’s Office said.

“I am deeply shocked by the news of the Beirut explosion”, Sarkissian said in the telegram.

 “This tragedy claimed numerous lives and caused great devastation. I express my condolences to you and the brotherly people of Lebanon. I wish resilience and fortitude to the families of the victims and speedy recovery to the injured. At this difficult moment, we are ready to provide assistance to the brotherly Lebanon”, the Armenian President said.

YEREVAN, AUGUST 5, ARMENPRESS. The Lebanese-Armenian Arevelk newspaper reports that the number of Armenians killed in the Beirut blast has reached 4.

According to Arevelk, the victim is identified as Telia Papazian, a Lebanese-Armenian woman who resided close to the port, where the explosion occurred.

Earlier reports said three Lebanese-Armenians were killed in the blast – Nazar Najarian, a politician from the Kataeb Party, Jessica Beckjian, a nurse at the Saint George Hospital University Medical Center, and a man identified as Jack Paramakian.

YEREVAN, AUGUST 5, ARMENPRESS. According to latest confirmed information 6 Lebanese-Armenians have been killed in the Beirut explosion on Tuesday, the Armenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Anna Naghdalyan said on social media.

“A task force has been initiated at the foreign ministry to coordinate the provision of targeted assistance with Lebanon’s crisis management authorities. The Armenian Embassy in Lebanon maintains constant contact with local authorities to together assess the Lebanese side’s needs and circle of assistance. At the same time, contact is maintained with Armenian community institutions to assess the needs,” Naghdalian said.

President Sarkissian holds phone conversation with Aram I over Beirut blast aftermath

YEREVAN, AUGUST 5, ARMENPRESS. Armenian President Armen Sarkissian held a phone conversation with Aram I, the Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia.

The President inquired about details from the Beirut explosion and expressed “his deep concern around the situation”, Sarkissian’s Office said in a readout.

“President Sarkissian expressed concern about the situation of the Armenian-populated Bourj Hammoud neighborhood which has been damaged by the blast, the damages suffered at the Antelias Cathedral and the condition of our Lebanese-Armenian compatriots”.

Sarkissian extended condolences to Aram I on the deaths, which includes also Lebanese-Armenians. The President wished speedy recovery to those injured.

“Expressing support to the Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia, and in person of him the Lebanese-Armenian community, President Sarkissian also expressed readiness to assist. The President expressed conviction that the Lebanese-Armenians, who have passed through and have overcome numerous challenges, together with the entire brotherly people of Lebanon will be able to overcome this difficult challenge as well”.
