A protest action of Amuslar protectors started at Liberty square in Yerevan. The participants who arrived in the capital city from Jermuk, call on the government to declare void the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) report of Amulsar and refuse pains of gold mine operation in the resort town.

One of the participants, Ani Khachatryan, informed about an online petition addressed to Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, Minister of Environment Romanos Petrosyan. The activist read out the text of the petition.

“We do not see the need to repeat all expert justifications around Amulsar operation presented over the past 8 years and their adverse impact on Armenia’s and primarily on Vayots Dzor province’s ecology, water resources, economy branches but focus on Elard report which clearly indicates the insufficient proves presented in Lydian’s documents about the impact on the environment,” the text read in part.

The participants thus called on the Cabinet to consider a new scientifically justified assessment report on possible environmental risks.
Khachatryan presented the position of the majority of Jermuk community members and urged the government to withdraw the positive conclusion of the government on Amulsar operation issued in 2016.

Green activists: RA government did not fulfill its promise on Amulsar project

ArmInfo. The Armenian Environmental Front (AEF) issued a statement in connection with the situation around the Amulsar field.

In particular, the statement notes that back in December 2018, the  Prime Minister told the residents of Jermuk that the future of  Amulsar would be decided based on the results of an international  examination.  “The RA Investigative Committee published the results  of the examination of Elard in the summer of 2019, trying to present  them with positive accents for Lydian Armenia,” activists note,  adding that this circumstance did not mislead the public.

“The RA government did not fulfill its promise and left the burden  and responsibility for a fair solution of the problem on the  shoulders of Jermuk people and conscientious citizens. Meanwhile, it  would be a very simple decision – based on the results of an  international study, to invalidate the positive expert opinion given  by the previous corrupt government in 2016. The unreasonable delay in  solving the problem in July- August 2020 led to a serious aggravation  of the situation and clashes both on the approaches to Amulsar and in  Yerevan, “the All-Armenian Environmental Front notes.

The total cost of the Amulsar project is $ 370 million. The life of  the deposit is 10 years and 4 months, with an average annual  production of 200 thousand ounces of gold planned. To recall, Lydian  Armenia is a subsidiary of the British offshore Lydian International.  Environmentalists and ordinary citizens are concerned that the  exploitation of the mine may lead to the pollution of the mineral  underground waters of Jermuk and Lake Sevan. In addition to the water  basin, the public is also concerned about the possible presence of  uranium manifestations at the deposit. Environmentalists and  activists demand that the positive conclusion on the EIA project be  invalidated, since it was adopted with legislative violations, and  the document itself contains problems and shortcomings. Earlier, the  European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) announced the  completion of its participation in the project for the development of  the Amulsar field.

Green activists hold a protest against the development of Amulsar

ArmInfo.. On August 20 in the evening, a protest action of green activists started in front of the RA Government against the development of the Amulsar mine. Earlier, protesters marched along the central streets of Yerevan; residents of  the city of Jermuk, who moved towards the capital this afternoon,  also joined them.

The main demand of the protesters is to invalidate the draft EIA  (environmental impact assessment). For over two years now, Jermuk  residents have been closing the approaches to the mine, since the  development of the mine can have an extremely negative effect on the  ecology of Jermuk, which was granted the status of a health resort  city during the Soviet era. In addition, with the positive conclusion  of the EIA, numerous risks were not taken into account, including for  the Kechut reservoir and the Sevan basin.

Ecologist Levon Galstyan emphasized that the fight against the  development of Amulsar has been ongoing since 2012. Earlier, the  Armenian government promised to reconsider its position on Amulsar if  the fears of environmentalists are confirmed by the results of an  international study. By order of the Government of the Republic of  Armenia, the corresponding study was carried out in 2019 by Elard,  which then noted in its conclusion that it is impossible to clearly  answer the question regarding the safe development of the Amulsar  mine with the available documentation. “All the problems raised  earlier by ecologists were confirmed by the study of Elard,” Galstyan  said.

The protesters had posters with the following requirements: ” As long  as we exist, there are no mines,”, “Close the mines – save lives”.  Jermuk residents demand a final solution to the problem, noting that  their actions have no political overtones, but their desire is not to  allow the city-resort to turn into a city mine.  They also note that  they will continue their actions to protect Amulsar, including by  blocking the roads leading to the mine by cars. Arman Khachatryan, a  participant in the road trip, also said that the security  organization of Lydian Armenia today tried to use violence against  the citizens who blocked the road to the mine.

The total cost of the Amulsar project is $ 370 million. The life of  the deposit is 10 years and 4 months, with an average annual  production of 200 thousand ounces of gold planned. To note, Lydian  Armenia is a subsidiary of the British offshore Lydian International.  Environmentalists and ordinary citizens are concerned that the  development of the mine may lead to the pollution of the mineral  underground waters of Jermuk and Lake Sevan. Earlier, the  European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) announced the  completion of its participation in the project for the development of  the Amulsar mine.

Artsakh’s MFA comments on Azerbaijani announcement distorting President Harutyunyan’s speech

YEREVAN, AUGUST 19, ARMENPRESS. The Foreign Ministry of Artsakh has commented on the statement of the Azerbaijani MFA, which attempted to distort the speech of Artsakh’s President Arayik Harutyunyan. As ARMENPRESS was informed from the press service of the MFA Artsakh, the comment of the Artsakh MFA runs as follows,

‘’In connection with the commentary of the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry, which attempted to distort the remarks of the President of the Republic of Artsakh Arayik Harutyunian, taking them out of the general context, we consider it necessary to note the following.

The President of the Republic of Artsakh stated very clearly about the inadmissibility of threats to shell Stepanakert and other settlements of Artsakh, which the Azerbaijani side regularly voices, including at the highest level. The military-political leadership of Azerbaijan has repeatedly stated its readiness to strike at any targets in Artsakh. In particular, once Minister of Defense of Azerbaijan instructed the rocket and artillery forces to “prepare for delivering devastating strikes” on Stepanakert and other towns of Artsakh. It is noteworthy that the official representative of the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry justified such threats by the fact that allegedly “there is no civilian population in Artsakh, but only the military and the field” .

Seeking to conceal its aggressive policy, based on intimidation and terror, Azerbaijan, through the falsification of facts and deliberate misinformation of the international community, tries to attribute its own steps and motives of actions to the Armenian sides. It is Baku and not Yerevan or Stepanakert that regularly threatens to destroy strategic civilian infrastructure and the settlements in Armenia and Artsakh. By the official statements on its readiness to launch missile strikes on the Metsamor nuclear power plant in Armenia , on Yerevan and Stepanakert, to shoot down civilian planes flying to Artsakh, as well as by a whole range of crimes committed against humanity and war crimes, Azerbaijan demonstrates that it does not hesitate to use terrorist methods as its state policy.

The Republic of Artsakh is ready to resolutely suppress any attempts by the Azerbaijani armed forces to attack the civilian population. The military airfield of the city of Gandzak (Ganja) or any other military location, which the Azerbaijani side tries to use for attacking the settlements of Artsakh, will become a legitimate target for the Defense Army of the Republic of Artsakh. The statement of the President of the Republic of Artsakh is a warning about the futility of the attempts to get political dividends through threats and terror. The Azerbaijan-Karabakh conflict has no military solution. The attempts to unleash another war will have disastrous consequences for the entire region”.
