YEREVAN. – The standards created in secret were suddenly introduced like and explosion and put up for discussion. Armine Vaghramyan, a teacher at School No. 122 in Yerevan, mentioned this Tuesday at a press conference regarding the forthcoming education process in Armenia.

“I want to assure that no educator, no scholar, no figure in the field was aware of this process. In the conditions of secrecy, groups were created that have set absolutely unacceptable standards.

Next, we also received an imperfect document—the order for school attendance. That order was also discussed when it was already written, it should have been put into use, but it had not been discussed before. The order is completely imperfect,” she said.

Vaghramyan added that with this regulation, teachers are required to take a COVID-19 test en masse, and teachers cannot enter their schools without it. “Is there a provision [in the Constitution] that the schoolchildren and their parents must also take a mandatory test? In that case, let’s test the whole nation,” she stressed.

In her turn, historian and ethnographer Susanna Melikyan Noted: “How can a school with 700-800 students check so many children for fever and then admit them to school in the morning? How many hours should it take? Or does the teacher have to teach for eight hours in a mask? What about his/her health?”

Or what does it mean not to let a child to go on recess? This is something abnormal, unnatural and just hysterical, sickening. (…). No parent would agree to have their child sit wearing a mask for 45 minutes [in class]. Schools must go on indefinite strike as of September 1.”

Panorama, Armenia
Aug 25 2020

August 25, Yerevan: Wings of Tatev, the world’s longest reversible aerial tramway (5,752m) announces a special offer for schoolchildren and kids from orphanages, who will get free access to the ropeway. The special offer is available from 25 August to 15 September inclusive, IDeA Foundation said in a statement.

Children will get unforgettable memories and impressions from magnificent landscapes, Vorotan Gorge with its panoramic view and the aerial tramway soaring above the Tatev Monastery Complex.

It is noted that Wings of Tatev, an aerial ropeway included in the Guinness World Records, has been operating since 2010. It is one of the landmarks of Armenia, contributing to development of local infrastructures and boosting both domestic and international tourism. Over the 10 years, it has hosted around 1mln visitors.
The abrupt decline in the tourist flow due to this year’s Coronavirus pandemic requires additional funding from the founders to cover operational costs. However, Wings of Tatev continues the flights and offers attractive packages for visitors and guests.

Ahead of the 10th anniversary of Wings of Tatev schoolchildren and kids from orphanages will be able to also visit one of the most famous religious, cultural and enlightenment centers of Armenia, the 9th century Tatev Monastery Complex.
“This will not only become an adventurous trip and exciting leisure for schoolchildren but also a journey into Armenia’s history, culture, religion and educational traditions. To boost domestic tourism, we’ve organized various special offers this year. For instance, in July we announced a special offer for visitors getting 4 tickets at the cost of 3. It especially increased family travel to Tatev”, said Director of Wings of Tatev Vahe Baghdasaryan.

Wings of Tatev were built within Tatev Revival Program which also includes reconstruction of Tatev Monastery Complex and development of neighboring communities. The aerial tramway is an example of venture philanthropy meaning the philanthropist doesn’t expect return of the invested money. The project generates revenue from its operation which covers all the costs of operation. Moreover, the revenue from the tourism infrastructure is allocated to reconstruction of Tatev Monastery as well as various community development initiatives.

For visiting Wings of Tatev, the Foundation offers registration, calling +374 60463333.

Azerbaijani press: Criminal case filed in Azerbaijan against captured Armenian commander

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Aug. 25

Trend:

As a result of the measures carried out by the Azerbaijani army, the commander of the sabotage and reconnaissance group of the Armenian Armed Forces, senior lieutenant Gurgen Alaverdyan, born in 1989, was identified and detained on August 23 at 06:00 in the direction of the Goranboy region of the front line, Trend reports on Aug. 25 referring to the joint information disseminated by the Azerbaijani Prosecutor General’s Office and the State Security Service.

There were solid suspicions that Gurgen Alaverdyan, having taken part in illegal armed formations in the territory of the Kalbajar region, occupied as a result of the wars of aggression initiated by the Armenian armed forces, attacked the military personnel, military enterprises, departments, organizations of Azerbaijan or individuals, causing harm to their health, causing significant property damage or other socially dangerous consequences, as well as committed actions classified as illegal acquisition, storage, transportation and carrying of firearms, their parts and ammunition. There were also solid suspicions that Alaverdyan, on behalf of the Armenian special services, in order to collect and transfer to this country information constituting a state secret for their use to the detriment of the security of Azerbaijan, crossed the state border on August 23, 2020 for espionage purposes.

On the fact, the General Prosecutor of Azerbaijan opened a criminal case under Articles 100.2 (waging an aggressive war), 276 (espionage), 279.1 (creation of armed formations or groups not provided for by law), 228.1 (illegal acquisition, transfer, sale, storage, transportation or carrying of weapons, component parts for it, ammunition, explosives and explosive devices) and 318.1 (illegal crossing of the state border of the Republic of Azerbaijan).

In order to conduct a thorough, complete and objective preliminary investigation within the framework of a criminal case, a joint operational-investigative group was created, consisting of employees of the Prosecutor General’s Office, the State Security Service, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the State Border Service.

Given the nature and complexity of the crime committed, the Prosecutor General has instructed the Investigation Department of the Prosecutor General’s Office to conduct a criminal investigation, and proper investigative actions and operational-search measures are currently being carried out.

Turkish press: Grave mistake in US foreign policy: Active anti-Turkey attitude

For the past few decades, there have been some circles in Washington that have fiercely endorsed the idea that the United States should pursue almost a belligerent attitude toward Turkey.

According to them, Turkey is responsible for every tension and crisis in bilateral relations. They criticize the White House even for extending an invitation to the Turkish government.

They call Turkey an unreliable ally and call on the U.S. administration to stop the partnership between the two countries. They bash the Turkish government whenever possible.

According to some of them, Turkey does not have strategic value and in fact, it is a burden for the U.S. Thus, they support the relocation of U.S. bases in the country and the removal of NATO’s strategic assets.

Some more radical people even argue that Turkey should be kicked out of NATO. In recent years this attitude toward Turkey in Washington, D.C. gained much more prominence.

Almost a year ago, when the Turkish government launched a counterterrorism operation in Syria, we witnessed the coming together of all of these different groups. Some in the U.S. media unfairly criticized Turkey and even asserted that Turkey may conduct an “ethnic cleansing” in Syria.

Several resolutions were introduced in the U.S. Congress to condemn Turkey for its operation and sanction members of the Turkish government.

The long-forgotten Armenian resolution was reintroduced to the U.S. Congress and passed through both the Senate and the House. It was interesting to see the members of Congress competing to introduce resolutions to “punish” Turkey.

The tweets from different officials, the leaks that were provided to the press by high ranking U.S. officials and the statements that involve the _expression_ of “concerns” and “threats” to Turkey were all parts of this anti-Turkey campaign.

Last week when a video was released showing Democratic candidate for presidency Joe Biden making similar statements about Turkey and the Turkish government, it was not a surprise for the Turkish public. There are several paradoxical dimensions of this anti-Turkey attitude in the U.S.

First, after so much anti-Turkey rhetoric and Turkish government bashing, the same names complain about the rise of anti-Americanism in Turkey.

After so many ignorant and insensitive statements, they expect the Turkish public to have a favorable view of the U.S. They often accuse the Turkish government of fueling anti-Americanism among the Turkish people.

Second, there is a more significant question that needs to be posed for these circles in Washington. Although they support a harsher policy of the U.S. toward Turkey, call Turkey an unreliable ally and endorse the downgrading of relations, they cannot answer what U.S. foreign policy can benefit from such an attitude toward Turkey.

For the ethnic lobbies in the U.S., the destruction of the relations between Turkey and the U.S. can be the ultimate objective. How about for the ordinary Americans? Is there a strategic benefit for the U.S. in spoiling its relations with one of the most important actors in the region? Would it bring any good for U.S. foreign policy to alienate Turkey, a country placed in such critical geography?

When there is a follow-up question regarding the anti-Turkey attitude and the alienation of Turkey, there is no convincing response from these circles.

Turkey is only used as a talking point, but there is no plan or strategic thinking among these circles on what the Turkish-American relations really mean.

Without understanding and without recognizing the cost of destroying relations with Turkey, they will continue to be the responsible parties for this grave mistake in U.S. foreign policy.

Turkish press: Why is Kamala Harris’ vice presidential candidacy important?

Joe Biden (L), U.S. Democratic presidential candidate and former vice president, and Kamala Harris, U.S. senator and Democratic candidate for vice president, celebrate after Biden accepted the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination during the final night of the Democratic National Convention, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, U.S., Aug. 20, 2020. (Reuters Photo)

U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden accepted his party’s nomination last week with one of the most powerful speeches of his career. It was different from previous conventions because of the COVID-19 concerns. It was a virtual Democratic convention that unified around Biden and U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris. Former presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders and even some Republicans made speeches during the convention.

Obviously, after Biden introduced Harris as his vice presidential candidate, everyone responded differently to the decision. Capping the joyful response from the Democratic Party, the Biden-Harris campaign announced that they had raised $26 million in the 24 hours after declaring his vice presidential pick – the latest development revealing that his own campaign and the reaction campaign against U.S. President Donald Trump have converged. As far as I can see, Harris is a threat to the Trump campaign, as the president started targeting Harris on Day One. It will be interesting to watch Vice President Mike Pence and Harris debate during a televised face-off on Oct. 7.

The 55-year-old senator is the daughter of an Indian mother and a Jamaican father. In 2003, she served as the district attorney in San Francisco and then as the attorney general of California. Known for her sensitivity to civil rights and her identity as a lawyer, Harris’s announcement on Martin Luther King Jr. Day regarding her presidential candidacy attracted notice. After ending her presidential bid, she kept good relations with Biden and his team. In fact, Harris’s candidacy as vice president is unsurprising, for she had been seen as the No. 1 candidate for the last three months.

Biden’s subsequent statements in March 2020 were significant: “The most important thing is that it has to be someone who, the day after they’re picked, is prepared to be president of the United States of America if something happened.” In four years, Biden will turn 81 years old. Many in the U.S. believe that Biden will take office for one term and leave the office to Harris. Of course, Biden and Harris’s first term and their level of success will become clearer when the time comes.

What I mean is that Biden did not introduce Harris as his vice presidential candidate for nothing. He has chosen a vice presidential candidate who will support him and help defeat Trump. We can clearly see that Harris is a long-term investment. Why not? At one time, Obama was not even given a chance because he was African American, but he ended up leading the country for eight years. It wouldn’t be surprising if Harris became the first African American and Indian American woman to lead the country one day.

Harris’ foreign, Turkey policy

Harris was one of the members of the Intelligence and Homeland Security Committee in the U.S. Senate and in particular, one of the prominent senators in the congressional Russia investigation sessions. She voted against increasing the defense budget and stated that she did not want the American Army to be involved in many places abroad. Stating that she cannot be silent about what has been done to the Uighur Turks in China, she also asserted that Trump’s heavy quotas for China are wrong.

She has stated, as Biden has, that arms sales to Saudi Arabia should be blocked, and she reacted to Saudi dissident and journalist Jamal Khashoggi’s murder. She also stated that Israel is an important ally and that she sides with the two-state solution on the matter of Israel and Palestine.

The only conspicuous statement by Harris on Turkey was about the alleged Armenian genocide. It should not come as a surprise, given that she is a politician representing California. Since a powerful Armenian diaspora lives in California, many politicians in the state have made statements against Turkey. Harris has said that it is wrong of Trump to decide to withdraw U.S. troops from Syria and was heavily critical of this. It is important to remember that Biden and Harris would support PKK/YPG terrorists in Syria.

We have seen many discrepancies between what is being said during presidential campaigns and what happens after the candidate takes office. If Trump gets reelected, there will not be any changes to bilateral relations. If Biden and Harris get elected, it will not be an easy process for Turkish-American relations; however, I believe that sincere communication and open diplomacy are always a solution to problems.

In 2011, Trump donated $6,000 to Harris to support her campaign, and now he is slamming her. While she was criticizing Biden harshly for racism last year, she now works for Biden.

This is what’s called politics. You never know what tomorrow holds.

Soon, we will see Harris in the spotlight more than Biden. She is ambitious and has a lot of supporters due to her powerful speeches at the podium. If the elections go as the Democrats wish, it could be said that Biden has even paved the way for Harris’s future presidency.
