Why . հայ (.hay) domain is not popular in Armenia

ARKA, Armenia
Feb 7 2019

YEREVAN, February 7. /ARKA/.  The .Հայ (.hay) domain, an Internet country code top-level domain, provided to Armenia by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), designated for two-letter country code AM, and  intended for domain names in the Armenian language, active since 2016, is not progressing because of the way the full stop punctuation mark is used in the Armenian language, vice-president of the Internet Society (ISOC) public organization Grigory Saghiyan told reporters on Thursday.

He said after the Armenian transcription of the full stop was introduced  (in Armenian, full stop punctuation mark  looks like a Russian or English colon, while one dot  means a colon), electronic systems recognized it. However, now  the systems do not recognize the full stop as such, perceiving it as a colon.

According to him, as a result  the sites are not recognized by the servers. The  system does not go to  the domain, but sends the user to a search engine. He said the Armenian IT community plans to hold public discussions to look into  the expediency of replacing these symbols.

According to Saghiyan, the use of Armenian-language domain names provides owners with a number of advantages, including marketing ones, since regional domain names are first of all issued in search engines.

Liana Galstyan, head of external relations of the Internet Society, noted that at the moment 300 sites are registered in the new domain zone, including commercial organizations and government agencies, but  not all of them actively use their sites, mainly doing it to redirect to their sites with Latin names. She said the domain is free for schools.

The Latin domain .am is the official domain of Armenia, which  appeared in August 1994. –0–

Writing in Armenian letters in internet becomes trendy

ARKA, Armenia
Feb 7 2019

YEREVAN, February 7. /ARKA/. February 7 is marked in Armenia as the Day of Using Armenian Letters on the Internet.  It was first held in 2012, when a blogger Zohrab Yeghanyan asked Internet users to use Armenian letters instead of transliterating Armenian words in Latin and Cyrillic letters. Since then, along with the development of technology, more and more users are switching to the Armenian alphabet.

“In fact,  writing in Armenian letters has become trendy, especially given the availability of Armenian keyboards on smartphones, tablets and other gadgets” Liana Galstyan from Internet Society public organization, told reporters on Thursday.

"Armenian users began to write more often in the Armenian language on the Internet, moreover, a reverse tendency has appeared when Russian and English words are also written in Armenian transliteration," Galstyan said.

She said the use of Latin or Cyrillic letters when writing Armenian words caused certain difficulties due to some linguistic nuances and the impossibility of transcribing some Armenian letters in other languages.

Switching to the Armenian alphabet allowed registering unprecedented advances in the technology market; in particular, the Armenian keyboard layout and applications in Armenian appeared not only on computers, but also smartphones, in the Android operating system, in Windows, and also in Apple gadgets.

Armenians began using Latin letters in the mid-90s of the 20th century, when the first mobile phones appeared in the country without Armenian keyboards. –0—

ARF-D representative surprised at absence of any reference to Armenian-Turkish relations in government’s program

Aysor, Armenia
Feb 7 2019

ARF-D Bureau member, responsible for ARF-D political affairs office Giro Manoyan considers it strange that no reference was made to the Armenian-Turkish relations at government’s program.

As to whether it is equivalent approach if to consider Turkey’s zero interest toward regulation of relations with Armenia, Manoyan said, “It is not so, because if we do not refer to it, it means that it is not of any significance for us. In such case Turkey’s stance would have been justified. It will mean that the regulation of Armenian-Turkish relations is important neither for Turkey nor for Armenia. Of course, we do not have anything to concede but it will be right for us to always demand from Turkey non-hostile attitude toward Armenia, establishment of diplomatic relations and lifting the blockade,” he said.

Giro Manoyan refrained from any other comments, adding that the ARF-D will come up with an extended statement about the program of the government.

When a new Armenian Patriarch of Constantinople will be elected is still unclear.

Vicar-General of the Armenian Patriarchate of Istanbul, Archbishop Aram Ateshian says the meeting with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu was encouraging, but uncertainty about the terms of new elections is still there.

The issue was discussed earlier this week during Mevlut Cavusoglu’s meeting with Archbishop Khajag Barsamian, representative of the Armenian Church at the Vatican, Shahe Ananyan, Director of the Inter-Church relations Department of the Holy See of Etchmiadzin and Patriarchate’s Vicar-General Archbishop Aram Ateshian.

“The Minister said they are not against, and the elections must certainly take place, but there should first be unity among the community,” Archbishop Ateshian told Public Radio of Armenia.

According to him, Cavusoglu advised the community not to hurry because the Turkish authorities have their own issues to solve.

The country is going to hold municipal elections on March 31 and the authorities are busy with domestic issues, the Patriarchal Vicar said.

“After that we’ll see which are the soonest terms we can authorize the election,” the Archbishop quoted Mevlut Cavusoglu as saying.

He reminded that the state also has a say in the election, and it’s not only up to the community to make the choice.

The Patriarcial Vicar added no one can know when the election will take place – in 63 months, 8 months or more.

Armenian family-run rug business in U.S. continues legacy of helping refugees

Panorama, Armenia

A rug business that's been run by an Armenian family in New Haven, U.S. for 137 years continues to grow and give back to its community.

Kebabian's Oriental Rugs has been woven into the fabric of the Elm City and its business is stretching overseas to help refugees, WFSB reports.

Hundreds of exotic runs are stacked up and hanging from the front windows to the back walls.

“We’re the oldest hand-made rug business in quarters in the United States," said John Kebabian, owner, Kebabian's Oriental Rugs.

The shop can be found on Elm Street underneath a neon sign.

“This is our 137th year," John Kebabian said. "We began in 1882, when my great great uncles came over from Turkey to go to Yale, and they set up shop first in order to sell rugs to finance their education.”

The legacy of the Armenian family that emigrated from Turkey is that they built a foundation and that nothing was given.

“It’s a lot of hard work and dedication, but we don’t inherit it. What we do is inherit the reputation," John Kebabian said.

John Kebabian said he bought the store from his father in 1992 and his son Joshua Kebabian will have to do the same.

“I’m 29 and I just want to steward this business and do this product the best that I can," said Joshua Kebabian

To get these hand-woven rugs, John Kebabian said he travels to Afghanistan and Pakistan. Joshua Kebabian covers India and Nepal.

“It’s done all by hand and our specialty [is] natural dye stuff so people search us out from actually all over the country," John Kebabian said.

Prices range anywhere from $25 for a small rug to more than $100,000 for high-end ones or antiques. Customers can also find a large rug on clearance for around $400.

Wednesday, more than 800 rugs were delivered to them from Afghanistan. It was the largest shipment in the store's history.

"So many rugs today that are being heavily marketed are machine made and they’re made of plastic," Joshua Kebabian said. “We prefer to use all natural products like the wool and silk.”

Their business helps employ hundreds of people overseas and they have some refugees working in their store as well.

“We work with an organization called IRIS in New Haven," John Kebabian said.

IRIS stands for Integrated Refugee and Immigrant Services.

“We have two guys from there, they are phenomenal," said John Kebabian. "They are from Afghanistan.”

They've been growing the business with interior designers, online and with social media.

“Family, history, passion, style, quality hand-made rugs since 1882," Joshua Kebabian said. "I think that just sums up who we are.”
