Armenia sees strong growth in diamond, jewelry production
Diamond and jewelry production grew strongly in Armenia in 2018, the latest official statistics show.
The country produced a total of 229,396 carats of diamonds last year, up by 12.4% from the previous year, when the output stood at 204,102 carats, Panorama.am learned from the Statistical Committee.
The raw materials for diamond processing in Armenia are imported mainly from Russia, Belgium and Israel.
According to the figures, 2,290 kg of jewelry were manufactured in Armenia in 2018, securing a 18.7% growth from 2017 when some 1,929 kg were produced.
France’s Macron expected to pay state visit to Armenia
French President Emmanuel Macron has recently announced his intention to travel to Armenia on a state visit, French Ambassador Jonathan Lacôte revealed at a meeting with Armenia’s Deputy Prime Minister Mher Grigoryan on Thursday.
The French envoy stressed the visit would also contribute to the clarification and further expansion of bilateral programs, the government’s press service told Panorama.am.
He expressed his country’s readiness to develop relations with Armenia both in bilateral and multilateral formats.
The timeframes of the French leader’s expected visit have not been disclosed yet.
Expert: Armenian IT sector succeeded because of non-interference of state agencies
YEREVAN. – Information technologies have become a priority sector in Armenia because of non-interference of the state, media expert Samvel Martirosyan told reporters on Friday.
The expert believes that this independence from the government agencies and government control shows that now Armenia can carry out a revolution in e-commerce.
“We have to conduct smart economic policy so that the possibilities of e-commerce could not become an evil. We have to promote export so that people living in Armenia could have a chance to sell products outside the country, not to buy only,” he added.
The expert emphasize that the advantage has to be given to the companies that want to sell on the web.
“In order to do this we have to raise the level of education and to improve necessary infrastructure,” he emphasized.
Armenia commiserates with Iran over deadly terrorist attack
TEHRAN, Feb. 15 (MNA) – Armenia has expressed condolences over Wednesday’s terrorist attack on a military convoy in Iran that killed at least 27 border soldiers of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) and wounded many others.
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan offered condolences to Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani over the deadly terrorist attack in Iran.
“I was deeply shocked by the news of a terrorist attack on a bus in Sistan and Baluchestan, causing dozens of casualties,” Pashinyan said.
He offered deepest condolences to the Iranian president and nation. He also wished a speedy recovery to those injured.
A suicide bomber targeted a bus carrying members of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Corps traveling on a road between two cities in the province, which straddles the border with Pakistan. A car filled with explosives detonated alongside the bus.
The so-called Jaish ul-Adl terror group, which is based across the border in Pakistan and is responsible for kidnapping Iranian border guards and carrying out other terrorist attacks of this kind in Zahedan over the past years, has claimed responsibility for the Wednesday night's terrorist attack on social media.
The Armenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also expressed deepest condolences to the families and friends of the victims.
"It is with great sorrow that we learned about the terrorist attack in the Iranian province of Sistan and Baluchestan. We express our deepest condolences to families and relatives of those killed, wishing them strength of spirit and resilience to overcome this heaviest of sorrows," the Ministry said in a Twitter post.

Iran ready to import 50,000 sheep from Armenia a month
YEREVAN, February 15. /ARKA/. Armenia has a huge potential for the export of sheep, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said at a government meeting on Friday. According to him, the government has been discussing this issue with the private sector since last year.
"There is a huge demand for Armenian lamb and mutton outside the country, but our sheep breeders are unable to meet it and have to import mutton from third countries in order to re-export it," said Pashinyan.
According to Aram Gharibyan, an advisor to Prime Minister, Iran is ready to import 50,000 sheep a month from Armenia and pay 2,800-2,900 drams per kilogram of lamb meat.
He said there are about 700,000 sheep in Armenia, which implies 500 thousand potential lambs. ‘Considering the expansion of production by some farmers, I think it will be possible to ensure domestic production for several years," said Gharibyan.
He said increased lending to sheep breeders at profitable terms will encourage farmers to breed more sheep.–0–
Government to unveil new concept to cut unemployment rate
YEREVAN, February 15. /ARKA/. The government of Armenia plans to unveil next week a new concept of how it is going to cut unemployment rate, Deputy Prime Minister Tigran Avinyan said at a Cabinet session today. He said the concept is dubbed ‘Down to work, Armenia.’
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan told the session that one of the priorities in this era is to take stock of all the vacancies across the country with the proposed wages, the requirements and addresses of employers.
He told corresponding government agencies to create centers for personnel retraining in accordance with the requirements of the labor market and to activate all those projects which are focused on teaching business skills.
Avinyan said all initiatives will be implemented as part of a single program. He said that along with the high level of unemployment rate there are many vacancies.
The Minister of Labor and Social Affairs Zaruhi Batoyan, noted that the ministry’s Employment Center has already registered 2,200 vacancies, but the demand for them is low because of low wages.-0-
Russian official says Russian investors ready to invest in Armenia
YEREVAN, February 15. /ARKA/. Leonid Kalashnikov, the chairman of a Russian State Duma committee on CIS Affairs, Eurasian Integration and Relations with Compatriots, said at a briefing in Yerevan today that Russian investors are ready to invest in Armenia.
He said Armenian government’s promises should translate into deeds, such as adoption of investor encouraging laws. He said economy needs to become stable, offer high salaries.
In his words, the issue of investment should be considered in the context of geopolitics and politics in general. “What advantages will investors get in Armenia and why they should come to Armenia, and not go, for example, to Georgia?” Kalashnikov said.
He asked whether Armenia is ready to take measures that, on the one hand, will allow the country to be attractive to investors, and on the other, guarantee protection against interference and changes in the rules.
"The investor is always waiting for answers to these two questions. You can’t force them to invest here or there. He goes there where there is profit," he said. He added that Russia-based ethnic Armenian business people are ready to invest in their homeland. -0-
