The Armenian Apostolic Church celebrates the Feast of the Lord’s Presentation at the Temple (Tiarn’ndaraj) on 14 February. Tiarn’ndaraj (Trndez), or Candlemas as it is known in the West, symbolizes the presentation of the 40-day-old Christ Child at the Temple in Jerusalem, Qahana.am reports.

In accordance with the Law of Moses, the infant Christ was brought to the Temple by Mary and Joseph and presented to God. A man named Simeon was there, to whom it had been revealed that he should not see death before he had seen the Lord.  Simeon held the infant in his arms, blessed God, and said, “Lord, let your servant now depart in peace, for my eyes have seen your Salvation, which you have prepared before the face of all people.  A Light to lighten the Gentiles, and the Glory of Your people, Israel.” (Luke 2:29-32)

In the tradition of the Church, Evening Services (Nakhatonak) are conducted on the night preceding the Feast Day. At the conclusion of the service, the priest lights a candle from the Holy Altar, and distributes the flame to all present. With great care, the faithful take the lit candles home to their families.

The morning of the Feast Day, Divine Liturgy is celebrated in Armenian churches throughout the world. The hymn offered during the Liturgy commemorating Tiarn’ndaraj glorifies Simeon’s articulation of “a Light to lighten the Gentiles”. The hymn praising Simeon also lauds the Mystery of the Incarnation.

Many additional customs have been inherited from the past, including the blessing of the four corners of the world in the Andastan Service, the blessing of newlywed couples, as well as offering prayers for the crops and fertility of the fields.

Yerevan responds to U.S. criticism

Anna Naghdalyan

Yerevan /Mediamax/. Yerevan has taken note of the statement by the U.S. Department of State in connection with the deployment of the Armenian Humanitarian Mission to Syria (AHM).

Spokesperson of the Foreign Ministry of Armenia Anna Naghdalyan has spoken about this.

“Armenia and U.S. have long worked together to address the current humanitarian catastrophe in Syria with its massive refugee and displacement crises.

I would like to repeat that throughout the Syrian conflict the plight of civilians, minorities, including the sizable Syrian-Armenian community has consistently been a priority concern for the Armenian people worldwide. The Armenian public opinion strongly reflects deep compassion and concern for the sufferings of civilians and the devastation of the country. We speak about a country which has had an indispensable contribution for the survival of the Armenian nation in the wake of the Armenian Genocide.

The Armenian Consul General has been never stopped operating throughout the crisis. To date Armenia has sheltered around 22 000 Syrian refugees and has dispatched 4 airplanes of humanitarian aid to the Syrian people. With the establishment of a relative normalcy and security, Armenia is now keen to continue its contribution to the humanitarian mission, including by providing doctors and humanitarian sappers, to help improve the livelihoods of civilians in the conflict-torn Aleppo.

AHM is a purely relief mission guided by the International Humanitarian Law and coordinates its work with the relief agencies and international partners present on the ground.

We share the concerns of the international community with regard to the plight of the ethnic and religious minorities in the Middle East and attach importance to the continued provision of humanitarian support in Syria,” Anna Naghdalyan said.

Ex-prime minister ridicules government’s five-year program

ARKA, Armenia
Feb 14 2019

YEREVAN, February 14. /ARKA/. A former Armenian prime minister Hrant Bagratyan lashed out today at the five-year program of the Armenian government, calling the bulk of its provisions ‘idle talk” and describing the others as ‘ridiculous and empty.’

“Overall, everything that is concrete in this program is wrong, but there is no specifics either in what is right,” he wrote on his Facebook page.

More specifically, Bagratyan described as “idle talk” the provisions of the program related to external and internal security issues, education, science, culture and health. He said some of the provisions lack specifics or implementation plans, and some are simply presented in the form of slogans, for example, the introduction of medical insurance or the fight against corruption.

Bagratyan also noted that the program is scarce in numbers and specific indicators. The first figure he says appears on the 40th page, which refers to an average GDP growth of 5%.

He also said the goal of increasing the share of exports in GDP to 43-45% in five years is incredible and unreasonable questioning also the government’s ability to introduce agricultural insurance system. Bagratyan ridiculed also the provision to make Armenia a regional electric power hub. -0-

“Aurora“ will help Matenadaran present Armenian cultural centers across the world

ArmInfo.Aurora Humanitarian Initiative continues to support the Matenadaran,  Armenia’s national repository of ancient manuscripts, with a new  grant of $20,000. With these funds, the Matenadaran will commission  the preparation and design of an interactive table-map of Armenian  Scriptoria, Aurora Humanitarian Initiative’s press service told  ArmInfo.

Scriptoria, or Monastic Writing Centers, have a special significance  in the cultural life of the Armenian nation. They were the unique art  and cultural spaces where Armenian scribes and miniaturists created  and copied illuminated manuscripts.  The interactive table-map will  bring together these writing centers, creating comprehensive image of  Armenian manuscript culture. Having these centers in one place will  deepen the understanding of the geography, history, and development  of Armenian manuscript heritage in Armenia and in Armenian  communities worldwide.

“Our collaboration with the Aurora Humanitarian Initiative is  invaluable,” said Vahan Ter-Ghevondyan, director of the Matenadaran.  “This new project of the interactive table-map will be a very helpful  visual aid that presents the scriptoria for the spiritual and  cultural centers. These advanced technological solutions are the most  impactful ways of introducing this rich heritage, and its  significance to global culture,” he continued.

Simply by touching the interactive map every visitor of the  Matenadaran will be able to travel deep into the history of the  development of the dozens of scriptoria. Individual multi-touch  windows will present detailed information and images of the writing  centers, as well as their brief history, geographical location, and  architectural characteristics of the complexes in which they existed.  Additional windows will provide information about manuscripts, such  as their titles, numbers and locations, scribes and miniature  artists, statistical data, and other.

“We are delighted to continue the cooperation with the Matenadaran,  the immense depository of Armenian manuscripts. These manuscripts are  windows into the intellectual history of Armenia and the Western  world. Aurora believes in the value of presenting the Armenian past  and present within the context of global developments.  This project  does just that, going beyond preservation to easy and multi-layered  access,” stated Vartan Gregorian, Co-Founder of the Aurora  Humanitarian Initiative.

This is Aurora’s fourth grant to the Matenadaran within Aurora’s  Armenian Memory Act program, aimed at enhancing the preservation and  use of archives and documentation of the Armenian experience. In  2015, funds from Aurora enabled the Matenadaran to purchase a special  scanner to digitize manuscripts, making them more accessible for  researchers and the wider public. Over 4560 manuscripts and archival  documents have been digitized to date.

The 2016 grant funded the training of ten Matenadaran guides in  Germany. By visiting various museums and cultural centers they  learned new approaches to museum management and further developed  professional skills needed for guides working in foreign languages.  The 2017 grant helped Matenadaran organize more than 50 lectures on  general topics in the humanities, as well as specific subjects  related to the Matenadaran collection, including Medieval Studies,  Manuscript Studies, historical primary sources, bibliography  formation, restoration and preservation of manuscripts, and archival  documents. A new brochure is currently being prepared for guides and  researchers working in the Matenadaran.

Students demand resignation of Yerevan State University Head

ArmInfo.A couple of dozen students took to the protest march demanding the resignation of the head of Yerevan State University (YSU) Aram Simonyan. The  participants of the protest are moving on Alek Manukyan Street,  chanting: “Free, independent student”, “YSU without Aram”.

According to them, it is “thanks” to the efforts of the incumbent  head that the quality of education in the university is amiss. They  also recalled the latest revelations of the State Audit Office.  According to dissatisfied students, only Simonyan’s resignation will  solve the problems existing in the university.  In this regard, as  the protesters noted, they gave a start to the “YSU 100 anniversary  without Aram” movement, and call on everyone concerned about the fate  of Alma Mater to join the initiative. “We urge the Board of Trustees  to meet on an emergency basis and raise the issue of the rector’s  resignation,” they said.

To recall, back in October 2018, the head of the State Control  Service, David Sanasaryan, told reporters about the revealed abuses  at Yerevan State University (YSU). Sanasaryan described the abuses  revealed in the main university of the country as “serious  violations” that “contain elements of a criminal offense”. At the end  of December, David Sanasaryan wrote on his Facebook page that the  results of the checks carried out at Yerevan State University during  2 months were transferred to the prosecutor’s office. “According to  our preliminary estimate, the fund was damaged in the amount of more  than 800 million drams. I assure you that if we continue the study,  it will be found out that the amount of damage is much higher.  Details will be presented during a press conference soon,” noted  David Sanasaryan. Head of the university Aram Simonyan, in response  at the press conference, pointing out the Service’s wrongdoing, said  that this was done intentionally, “to discredit the YSU, its  leadership, the university’s activities, to mislead the public for  some purpose and try to fish in troubled waters. David Sanasaryan  responded to this statement on his Facebook page: “I watched the  press conference of the YSU Rector. Mr. Rector is either in a deep  delusion or is trying to deceive the public. Our answer will be very  painful. “To note, for more than 12 years, beginning in May 2006,  occupying the post of YSU Rector, Aram Simonyan is also a member of  the RPA, according to the official website of the party, for about 20  years, since 1998.

Azerbaijani press: Exile of Azerbaijanis and exodus of Jews from Armenia (PHOTO)

14 February 2019 20:33 (UTC+04:00)

Baku, Azerbaijan, Feb. 14

Trend:

The city of Guba in Azerbaijan is not the only place in the world where Azerbaijanis and Jews have been coexisting peacefully. Prior to the ethnic cleansing carried out by Armenian nationalist forces, they lived in religious and ethnic harmony in Armenia in the village of Yeghegis (known in Azerbaijani as Alayaz) of Armenia’s former Yeghegnadzor district (now a part of Vayots Dzor Province). This village is located about 18 km from the city of Yeghegnadzor and 135 km from Yerevan, on the slopes of the ridge of Daralayaz, at an altitude of 1,640 m above sea level.

Important archaeological discoveries in these parts of Armenia were made by scientists back in 1996. Tombstones which, besides having inscriptions in Azerbaijani, also contained inscriptions in Hebrew and Aramaic, were among the finds. The graves date back to the middle of the 13th century – with some dating even to the year 1337 – and are not only a convincing evidence of the existence of the Jewish community in Armenia from ancient times to the modern period, but also of its coexistence with the prevailing Azerbaijani population of the province.

It is clear that the contributing factor to the exodus of the oldest Jewish community from Armenia was the exodus of their neighbors, the Azerbaijanis of Yeghegis, the indigenous population of the historical Daralayaz province. The exodus of the Jews, on the backdrop of the flourishing Jewish communities in Georgia and Azerbaijan, is a dark spot in the history of the Armenian people, as is the genocide of Azerbaijanis.

Due to a policy of methodical ethnic cleansing against Azerbaijanis, Turks, Kurds, Assyrians, Yezidis, Molokans, Greeks and Jews, Armenia has turned into a monoethnic state, where more than 99 percent of the population is made up of Armenians from various parts of the Middle East. But the miraculously preserved old Azerbaijani-Jewish cemetery is a tangible evidence of the actual history of these lands. On the outskirts of the village, a shaky bridge leads to the other side of the river, separating the Jewish cemetery from … the Azerbaijani one, which, in a way, relates Yeghegis to Guba, where, to this very day, Jews and Azerbaijanis live as one family.

A group of students sat in front of the YSU board of trustees door. They demand that the council convene a meeting and express no confidence in the rector of YSU.

They say we will not leave until they come out and accept their letter.
