Trump: A Coward on the Armenian Genocide

Harut Sassounian

BY HARUT SASSOUNIAN

Last week, President Donald Trump issued his third April 24 statement “on Armenian Remembrance Day.” For three consecutive years, he did not muster the courage to use the correct term—genocide—to describe the annihilation of 1.5 million innocent Armenian men, women, and children by the Ottoman Turkish government!

Trump basically repeated the same words that he used in the past two years, with very minor changes. Again he used the Armenian term “Meds Yeghern” (Great Crime) to avoid calling the mass killings genocide! Meds Yeghern is simply a description that Armenians used before the word genocide was coined by Raphael Lemkin in the 1940’s, whereas genocide is a term of international law and has legal consequences. Besides, if Trump insists on using an Armenian word, he should have said “Tseghasbanoutyoun” (genocide)!

Since his election as president, many Armenians had been hoping that Trump would rely on his unpredictable impulses to describe the Armenian mass killings as genocide, ignoring the counsel of his advisors and the position of his predecessors. Unfortunately, Trump knows very little about Armenian-Americans and can care less about their interests. The only time Trump will pay attention to the genocide issue is when Armenian-Americans gain more political clout.

It should not take much courage for Trump to use the term Armenian Genocide, because Ronald Reagan previously used it in his Presidential Proclamation on April 22, 1981. If he cannot call it genocide, Armenian-Americans do not need Trump to say anything on April 24. The Armenian Genocide has already been recognized by the United States several times. In addition to Reagan’s statement, the U.S. House of Representatives adopted two resolutions in 1975 and 1984 acknowledging the Armenian Genocide, and the U.S. government sent an official document to the International Court of Justice (World Court) in 1951 recognizing the Armenian mass killings as a case of genocide.

Nevertheless, Trump’s inadequate statement has a couple of secondary benefits to the Armenian Cause:

1. It irritates the hell out of Turkish leaders who seem to be ashamed and outraged that the President of the United States is reminding the world of “one of the worst mass atrocities of the 20th century,” and asserting that “beginning in 1915, one and a half million Armenians were deported, massacred, or marched to their deaths in the final years of the Ottoman Empire.” Both Turkish President Erdogan and Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu reacted with indignation and denial to Trump’s April 24 statement.

2. The statements of Pres. Trump and his predecessors cause each year a major political reaction around the world, generating mass publicity in the international media which is further fueled by the Turkish leaders’ denials.

On April 24, 2019, Armenia’s Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan issued an important statement on the 104th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. Surprisingly, his statement did not mention Turkey or the Ottoman Empire as the perpetrator of the Armenian Genocide! This must have been an unfortunate oversight on the part of the Prime Minister and his aides. I do not think it was done intentionally, particularly since the statement does include a strong reference to Armenians losing their homeland in addition to the human losses. In the past, Armenia’s leaders have refrained from raising the issue of Armenian territorial demands from Turkey.

Meanwhile, Erdogan issued a particularly disgraceful statement on April 24, speaking at a Symposium in Ankara: “The relocation of the Armenian gangs and their supporters, who massacred the Muslim people, including women and children, in eastern Anatolia, was the most reasonable action that could be taken in such a period.”

Erdogan is shamefully accusing the Armenian victims of committing a mass crime against the victimizing Turks. This is an outrageous lie which is the equivalent of accusing Jews of killing Germans during the Holocaust! Erdogan must be suffering from a serious mental illness!

In a surprising development, Prime Minister Pashinyan responded forcefully to Erdogan’s pathetic lies. Pashinyan described Erdogan’s statement as “hateful” and called on the international community to respond: “On the day when Armenians around the world mourned the innocent victims of the Ottoman Genocide, Turkey, this country’s president Recep Tayyip Erdogan reiterated a statement denying the greatest crime of the 20th century, calling it only, ‘the deportation of Armenians.’ To call the extermination of the entire Armenian population of the Ottoman Empire, as well as the massive forced deportation of Armenians (death caravans) ‘Armenian bandits and their accomplices,’ and the massacre of 1.5 million indigenous people, ‘the most logical behavior’ is not only a new level of denial of the Armenian Genocide, but also an excuse for the destruction of an entire nation. Such a statement on April 24, on the day of the anniversary of the Genocide, is a deep insult to the Armenian people and all of humanity, and an _expression_ of extreme hatred personally by Erdogan. The world should not be silent.”

We are heartened that Prime Minister Pashinyan raised the issue of the Armenian territorial demand from Turkey, a demand that the Armenian government should pursue officially at the International Court of Justice!

With the PRO Chess League semifinals and finals just days away, the margin for error is slim and some key factors will determine who goes home and who will stand at the podium as the 2019 PCL champions.

The PRO Chess League regular season produced some dramatic storylines that saw teams rise and fall over the course of a few wild final weeks. Chess.com takes a look at three important aspects of the second semifinal match: the Saint Louis Arch Bishops vs. the Armenia Eagles.

The matches will be played live at the Folsom Street Foundry in San Francisco on May 4 starting at 10 a.m. PDT., and will be streamed live on www.Twitch.tv/Chess and www.Chess.com/TV.

The Fabiano Factor:

Fabiano Caruana will hope that his pedigree helps lead his team over the defending champion Armenia Eagles.

Last season, the Eagles beat the Arch Bishops in the semifinals but there was one key difference: Fabiano Caruana was not on the Arch Bishops team. This season, the Arch Bishops have the world number-two in their lineup and will need a big performance from him to advance to the fFinals.

Caruana comes into the match in fine form, currently sporting his peak Chess.com blitz rating of 3025. Despite being known for his brilliant tactics and methodical opening preparation, Fabiano has clearly been working on his game in faster time controls and has now gained over 100 Chess.com rating points in the last year.

In case of a tie, the Eagles will have to get through Fabiano in order to win the match. In the live finals, the PRO Chess League uses an elimination-style format as tiebreaker, which means a team must defeat every player on the other team in order to win.

The Eagles, rapid and blitz specialists:

Zaven Andriasian (right) will have all eyes on him as he demonstrates why he’s board one for the defending champions

Zaven Andriasian won the title for the Eagles by defeating Wang Yue in a thrilling blitz match in 2018, despite being rated almost 100 points lower. The Eagles are all known for being excellent in faster time controls and this is a main contributor to their success in the PRO Chess League. The Eagles are all remarkably strong at blitz, with Andriasian, Martirosyan and Shant Sargsyan all rated in the top 50 of the Chess.com blitz leaderboard, and they’ll feel confident that they can even beat Caruana if it goes to a tiebreaker.

Shant Sargsyan vs Bok and Theodoreau:

Will Benjamin Bok overcome the pressure as he attempts to take points off a red-hot Armenia Eagles team?

Shant has been tearing it up this season with a performance rating in the 2600s. While he counts as only 2470 towards the team’s rating, his current FIDE is above 2500 and it’s clear that this 16-year old is a rapidly-improving young talent. If the Arch Bishops’ middle boards can subdue him, then it’s easy to see Saint Louis winning the match. However, if he continues his torrid streak against strong players and manages to go 1.5-0.5 or 2-0 against the Arch Bishops’ Bok and Theodorou, the Eagles should be in prime position for victory.

The PRO Chess League semifinals and finals weekend kicks off May 4 at the Folsom Street Foundry and tickets are selling fast. Tickets can be purchased at The Ticket Fairy for just $25 plus fees for the entire weekend. Each ticket purchased also comes with a limited edition 2019 PRO Chess League finals t-shirt.

Delivering message to 700,000 Armenians in France won’t save you, Erdogan tells Macron

Panorama, Armenia

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has once again lashed out at French President Emmanuel Macron over France’s decision to commemorate the Armenian Genocide on every April 24.

“Sending a message to 700,000 Armenians in France, Mr. Macron, will not save you. First, you should learn to be honest in politics. It’s not possible for you to win in politics unless you turn to be an honest politician,” Hurriyet Daily News quoted Erdogan as saying at his party’s assessment camp over the weekend.

Macron is new to politics and does not know “these businesses,” Erdogan said, adding he has discussed the issue with the French president a number of times.

He doubled down on Turkey’s stance that the relocation of Armenians “was neither a genocide nor a great disaster; it was a tragic event that took place under troublesome conditions a century ago.”

France held its first national day of commemoration of the Armenian Genocide on 24 April, fulfilling a pledge by Macron.

The French leader announced the commemoration at a meeting with representatives of the country’s large Armenian community in February, honoring a promise made during his 2017 presidential campaign.

Macron said “we commemorate the Armenian Genocide to make sure that history does not repeat its mistakes.”

Up to 1000 demonstrators participated in the action calling on the government to recognize the Armenian Genocide.

The demonstrators directed their protest to Prime Minister Scott Morrison who, despite previously referring to the mass killings as genocide, now stops short of using the term, Associated Press Australia reported.

The protesters were carrying “Turkey is guilty of Armenian genocide” and “Recognise the Armenian genocide” signs.

Speaking during a press conference, PM Morrison said he is not using the word genocide because he “represents the views of the country” and he spoke previously as a “private citizen”.

New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian earlier this week renewed calls for the government to formally recognize the genocide.

“Denial allows genocidal states to commit these heinous crimes in the belief they will escape the consequences,” she said.
