All efforts are being made to throw Armenia out of the Russian market. This is what President of the Agrarian-Rural Union NGO Hrach Berberyan told Armenian News-NEWS.am.

“I am giving the first impulse, and this is very serious. When Uzbeks and Kyrgyzs bring produce to the central vegetable market in Moscow, they pay 20,000 rubles, the same amount that Armenians used to pay five years ago. Later, Armenians started paying 30,000 rubles, and now they pay 65,000 rubles. In other words, Russia is making efforts to not let Armenians take apricots to Moscow. I’m not even mentioning the fact that services for Armenians are expensive,” he said.

According to Berberyan, this is not the result of deterioration of Russian-Armenian relations, but evidence of the fact that the ministers and deputy ministers of agriculture aren’t working efficiently.

Non-governmental organizations and Nikol Pashinyan met and discussed several issues, but they agreed that the discussion has to be closed. This is what political scientist Stepan Danielyan wrote on his Facebook page.

“Non-governmental organizations and Nikol Pashinyan met and discussed several issues, but they agreed that the discussion had to be closed and that their promises must not be made public.

They certainly didn’t discuss military secrets.

This sparks many questions.

Questions for Nikol:

-What are you hiding from the proud citizens of Armenia?

-What happened to direct democracy?

-Is the principle of public oversight no longer applicable?

Question for NGOs:

-Why were you complaining about closed discussions in the past and doing the same now? Do you feel you are part of the government and want to distinguish yourselves from others?

Question for proud citizens:

-What happened to your pride when people secretly discuss issues concerning you and look at you as mentally retarded people whom they can’t trust to solve public issues?” he noted.

NGO president on decline of agriculture in Armenia

The decline of agriculture in Armenia this year is due to poor management. This is what President of the Agrarian-Rural Union of Armenia NGO Hrach Berberyan told Armenian News-NEWS.am when asked why Armenia has seen a decline in agriculture this year.

“The first mistake was the conglomeration of the Ministries of Economy and Agriculture. Today, Armenia doesn’t have a ministry to coordinate the agriculture sector. In addition, there are no good specialists since they have left the country or have been laid off. There are new people such as a person who used to work as a taxi driver in the United States. Unfortunately, taxi drivers or cameramen from Russia can’t help Armenia’s agriculture grow. Only a person who knows about agriculture in Armenia can help agriculture grow, and for that, one needs knowledge and experience, but unfortunately, they don’t have knowledge and experience,” he said.

Berberyan noted that this will lead to decrease in the amount of sowing areas for wheat and barley and the increase of import of grains.

“There are fewer sowing areas for potatoes as well. The Ministry of Agriculture isn’t leading a policy to promote potato farmer. I believe Pashinyan needs to make serious personnel changes,” he said.

This year, Armenia saw a decline in the agriculture sector. Based on the data provided by the Statistical Committee of Armenia, the amounts of the gross agriculture product dropped by 7.4% in January-June compared to the same period of the previous year, comprising AMD 247,951,000,000.

Duryodhan Negi in action against Koryun Astoyan yesterday
Negi leads India’s unbeaten run at the Worlds with hard-fought win over Astoyan
National champion Duryodhan Singh Negi (inset) (69kg) claimed an exhausting 4-1 triumph over Armenia’s
Koryun Astoyan in his opening bout to enter the second round of the World Men’s Boxing Championships.
The Indian will face Jordan’s sixth seed Zeyad Eashash in the round of 32 on Monday. Eashash got a bye in the
opening round.
Astoyan seemed intimidated by the more muscular Indian but wasn’t lacking in effort. His punches were,
however, not connecting as powerfully.
The Armenian began to run out of steam in the second round and Negi took advantage to land a few lusty
combination blows.
Astoyan’s defence was particularly weak and he tried to make up for it by constantly being on the move. The
strategy was tiring for both but Negi endured it much better.
The final three minutes were a lopsided affair in which Astoyan was mostly left scurrying for cover even though
one judge favoured him over the Indian.
Commonwealth Games silver-medallist Manish Kaushik (63kg) and Brijesh Yadav (81kg) had earlier won their
opening bouts to enter the second round.

BURBANK — The Western Diocese of the Armenian Church and the Consulate General of Japan in Los Angeles, supported by the Little Tokyo Service Center, Japanese American National Museum, and Japanese American Cultural & Community Center, will co-sponsor a special presentation by Dr. Meline Mesropyan of Tohoku University speaking on the legacy of Diana Apcar (1859-1937), who lived in Japan from 1891-1937 and is known for her major impact on Japan-Armenia relations and aid to Armenian refugees.

The event will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 17, at 7 p.m. (doors open 6:30 p.m.) at the Western Diocese of the Armenian Church of North America, 3325 N. Glenoaks Blvd., Burbank.

Dr. Mesropyan’s presentation will focus on Apcar’s humanitarian work. Between 1915 and the late 1920s, about 1,500 out of several hundreds of thousands of Armenian refugees managed to reach Japan, where they found Apcar’s enormous support. Through her crucial assistance they were able to go to the U.S. and other final destinations. This talk focuses on how being a single woman in Japan, she could overcome various problems she faced in carrying out her humanitarian work.

Dr. Mesropyan will be joined by Apcar’s great-granddaughter, Mimi Malayan. In 2018, Malayan released a documentary on the life of Apcar entitled “Stateless Diplomat,” which has won several awards, including the Armin T. Wegner Humanitarian Award (Arpa International Film Festival, 2019), Best Biographical Film (New Hope Film Festival, July 2019), and Audience Choice for Best Documentary (Pomegranate Film Festival, November 2018).

Dr. Mesropyan was born and raised in Yerevan, Armenia and initially earned her bachelor’s degree in Japanese linguistics. She graduated in March 2019 from the Graduate School of International Culture at Tohoku University in Sendai. She has spent the last six years as a master’s and Ph.D. student researching the life and work of Apcar.

Her Ph.D. dissertation, written in Japanese and making extensive use of Japanese archival data, deals with the Japanese government’s processing of Armenian refugees during World War I and Apcar’s role. She lives in Sendai and is currently in the process of developing her Ph.D. dissertation into a book.

There will be a reception with Armenian and Japanese food.
