Chess: Levon Aronian favourite to secure right to challenge Carlsen

Chess: Levon Aronian favourite to secure right to challenge Carlsen
The world championship candidates tournament begins on Saturday with eight contenders gunning for the chance to face the Norwegian

by  Leonard Barden

The world championship candidates tournament opens at the Kulhaus, Berlin on Saturday afternoon, continues until 28 March and will decide who among eight qualifiers becomes the challenger to Magnus Carlsen for the Norwegian’s world crown in London in November.

All the games can be viewed live and free online (2pm start) as three Russians, two Americans and one each from Armenia, Azerbaijan and China start their marathon double-round all-play-all, a total of 14 games each.

Who will win? Levon Aronian is a popular choice and the betting favourite, after the Yerevan 35-year-old scored major successes in 2017. He has a fluent tactical style, is cultured and outgoing and has held his own with Carlsen in their mutual classical games of the last three years.

Aronian is favourite but he represents poor value after five previous failures at this level in the past decade. In none was he a threat at the business end. For a player in his mid-30s that is considerable psychological baggage.

Vlad Kramnik is a former world champion and has long cherished his ambition to regain the crown but at 42 his game is more uneven than in his best years. Of the two Americans Fabiano Caruana missed becoming the 2016 candidate only in the final round and has prepared seriously but his recent form, a failure at Wijk 2018, is less than convincing. Wesley So, at 24, is the youngest candidate and may need more experience.

Shak Mamedyarov is the current world No 2 and a fine tactician and competitor, yet there is an impression that his style lacks soundness at the highest level. Alex Grischuk, like Aronian, has played in several previous candidates without winning.

Ding Liren is the first ever candidate from China and is reckoned the outsider, though Beijing is hungry for global success, and Ding will have been prepared in depth for his big chance. All the other candidates have played in tournaments leading up to Berlin, but Ding has conspicuously stayed away.

Historically, those who are proven winners at the world title candidates stage have a significant chance of a repeat. Vassily Smyslov won at Zurich 1953, was held to a draw in the championship match by Mikhail Botvinnik who retained the crown, and again won the candidates in 1956 before capturing the world title a year later. Smyslov kept his ambitions alive even as a veteran, and at age 63 again reached the candidates final against Garry Kasparov.

Boris Spassky won two candidates events, in 1965 and 1968, while Anatoly Karpov and Viktor Korchnoi later also achieved doubles. In 2007 there was a match tournament for the title. Vishy Anand won that, and after losing his crown to Carlsen six years later the Indian still had the energy to become the challenger in 2014.

Sergey Karjakin won the 2016 candidates, had a real opportunity at one moment in the championship match in New York to take Carlsen’s crown, and drew the main series 6-6 before losing in speed tie-breaks. It is clear that all his play in the last two years has been geared towards this second attempt. His defensive skills, stable and strategic style, and improved speed technique are formidable weapons.

Karjakin has taken advice from the legendary Anatoly Karpov, a master of subtle positional play, and used it to effect when winning last week’s Tal Memorial blitz in Moscow.

Here he exploits the Israel No 1’s small errors in Karpov style. Black should prefer 11…Ne7! with the idea of a later c6 and d5, while next turn 12…hl backs up the f5 bishop. The fatal error was 20…Be4? (better Qhl) which allowed a forced winning sequence. Black resigned because 25…Nb4 26 Rxa8 Rxa8 27 Nxc5 wins the b4 knight or the d7 bishop.

Chess: President Sargsyan attends opening of World Chess Candidates Tournament in Berlin

Panorama, Armenia

Official press release by the Office of President of Armenia

President of the Republic of Armenia, President of the Armenian Chess Federation Serzh Sargsyan attended the solemn opening ceremony of the World Chess Candidates Tournament in Berlin late on March 9. President Sargsyan participated in the ceremony as an honorary guest in acknowledgement of our country’s contribution to the development and socialization of chess.

The President of the Republic of Armenia addressed the event with greeting remarks. Speeches were also delivered by President of the German Chess Federation Ulrich Krause, FIDE Vice President Georgios Makropoulos, as well as organizer’s representatives – Ilya Merenson, President of the World Chess Organization and Andrey Gurev, Vice-President of the Russian Chess Federation.

At the end of the event, the eight world-famous participants were presented.

President Serzh Sargsyan’s greeting remarks at World Chess Candidates Tournament opening ceremony

Dear Mr. Makropoulos,
Dear Tournament Participants,
Ladies and Gentlemen,

Today a great event is taking place in the world of chess: the long-awaited Candidates Tournament kicks off.

I think this is a special milestone for the chess giants present here who will start competing in a couple of hours for the right to challenge World Champion Magnus Carlsen.

I am also proud and grateful to the organizers for the opportunity to make the Tournament’s first symbolic move in acknowledgement of our country’s contribution to the development and socialization of chess.

Though Armenia is not one of the world’s largest countries for its small size and population, many consider it a chess superpower, since the modest Armenian national team, which features current contender Levon Aronian, has triumphed three times in the last few years and once won the title of world champion.

Chess is a unique game that has stood the time trial. It is quite similar to life, where the final result is largely dependent upon the steps taken, and after the end of the game, all the players, whether a king or an ordinary soldier, are placed in the same box. Perhaps, this is the reason why for many centuries humanity has been fond of and played chess in quest of its still unknown, hidden aspects, trying to uncover the endless secrets and depth of this delicate game.

Chess is a game, but it is also art and science. It teaches a person the culture of thought and accuracy, creativity and honesty. It imposes deep respect with regard to the opponent.

Realizing the positive impact of chess on children’s commitment, flexibility, brainstorming, and other qualities, Armenia became the world’s first nation to include it in the schooling program. I can state with great pleasure that our society welcomed the idea with great enthusiasm, and there are already some positive results. Indeed, we are happy to see that the Chess in Schools program is being introduced in other countries as well.

This year the world’s first chess research institute was inaugurated in Armenia. We hope that the Institute’s activities will help reveal the undiscovered aspects of the game of chess.

Dear friends,

The International Chess Federation, which today unites 189 countries, is the most important chess authority which has great responsibility in the development and dissemination of chess.

I would like to thank FIDE for continued and fruitful cooperation with the Armenian Chess Federation and wish them ever new achievements. Taking the opportunity, I also express my gratitude to the Berlin City Hall and the Organizers for offering us this nice chess holiday day. The high-level organization of the Tournaments will be a great investment and a stimulus for the development of chess around the world.

Dear chess players,

This tournament is unique in nature. The best of the best are challenging the title. Here, the difference between the first and the second places is enormous as the winner will continue his struggle for the Chess Crown. However, participation in the Tournament is a great honor for every chess player and speaks of their great mastership.

For many players, it is a dream and purpose of life to join the elite of eight selected chess masters. Each of you has earned this right in the wake of a protracted and stubborn struggle phased over several hard stages.

I am confident that the competition will be tense but exciting, and we will witness many beautiful and meaningful games.

As I am hosted in the homeland of the world-renowned chess player, second world champion Emmanuel Lasker, who held the chess throne for 27 years, I would like to wrap up my speech with his advice: “If you see a good move, look for the better.”

I wish all Candidates good luck. Let the strongest win.

Thank you.

Film: Dean Cain and Montel Williams Receive Presidential Order Of Honor from Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan

Broadway World
Executive Producers Dean Cain and Montel Williams were honored by Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan with the ORDER OF HONOR, one of the country’s highest awards, Architects of Denial, LLC has announced. The ceremony took place on March 6 at the Presidential Palace in Yerevan. The President announced the award for the two celebrities who have worked for the recognition of genocide worldwide.

Together, they produced the film, “Architects of Denial,” released last year to critical acclaim in the U.S. On March 5 the film received its Premiere screening in Yerevan at an exclusive event attended by President Sargsyan, government officials and representatives from around the world. In the U.S. the film created a national controversy when the ads for the film were rejected as being political. Mr. Cain and Mr. Williams vehemently fought for the right to advertise, claiming the genocide was historical, not political.

They then created a television special called “Denial” that is currently airing in the U.S. as well as internationally about the problems they encountered when they tried to bring the message public. It focuses on how special interest groups and genocide deniers attempted to stop the release of the film “Architects of Denial.”

“We are deeply humbled by this incredible honor. We have the utmost respect for every Armenian family that carries the scars and the burden of this genocide with them to this very day,” Dean Cain remarked. “Every Armenian family has a story. And they cannot be denied. Our intention in making this film was to educate and to shine a light on this dark moment of history in the hope that it will no longer be denied, and will never be allowed to happen again.”

Both Executive Producers also announced they will be doing another film about the spread of anti-Semitism around the world. Montel Williams added, “I am humbled to have participated in something that should resonate with all mankind; and to be recognized this way is an honor I will share with all who hate, hate.” Both Cain and Williams, who have completely opposite political views, agreed that: “humanitarian efforts and human rights come before politics, and that’s why we are working together on these projects.”
