WATERVLIET, N.Y. >> This weekend, the St. Peter Armenian Apostolic Church is expected to be filled with thousands of guests attending the annual Armenian Festival.

Guests who attend the free, two-day festival will be able to taste and enjoy many different kinds of Armenian foods, listen and dance to Armenian music, shop at different vendors, and kids will enjoy various carnival rides.

The festival will run from noon to 8 p.m. Saturday and then again from noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday at 100 Troy Schenectady Road church.

Guests will be able to taste authentic Armenian foods such as Kebab meals like chicken, losh or lamb along with the famous Hye Burger and special pastries like Paklava. For any guests that can drink alcohol there will be special Armenian beer and wine for tasting.

“It’s going to be bigger and better this year, we’re expecting a 25 percent increase from last year because of the popularity of it, it’s really been growing every year,” said Rafi Topalian, one of the organizers of the festival.

When the festival first started in 1910, it was a family picnic for the Armenian community. From that, it grew to a one-day festival and it is now a two-day event. Topalian said that in the future, the festival could even expand to three days.

Topalian said the first Armenian Church community in the Capital Region was established in Green Island in 1899 and a large Armenian community moved to Troy in the early 1900s. The Watervliet church was built in 1970.

“It’s really fun for the entire family, there’s some attraction whether it be the traditional Armenian dances, whether it be the tours, whether it be the children games, or whether it be the fabulous entrees of food,” Topalian said.

There is free parking and free admission to the event with indoor and outdoor seating. Even though the festival is free admission, Topalian says the church is still able to use the two-day event as a fundraising opportunity with items that people purchase during the festival.

For more information about the festival, visit the church’s website at stpeterarmenianchurch.com, contact Rafi Topalian at (518) 810-5018 or the church at (518) 274-3673.

52% of boys in Armenia are victims of bullying (video)

According to research conducted in 2015, 52% of boys in Armenia are subjected to bullying, i. e. physical or psychological violence (mockery, humiliation). The members of a five-year-old public campaign against violence against children, “Replace Violence with Love,” stress that violence is everywhere at school, at home, in the yard.

“The types of violence are different. Among them is bullying This is a childhood violence that is ignored,” says Aida Muradyan, World Vision Child Protection and Education Program Coordinator.

Bullying is divided into several types: physical bullying (beating, heating), verbal, or psychological bullying (mockery, etc). Bullying victims are mostly people who have not found their place in society, or those who have certain physical, external defects, big nose, and so on. Aida Muradyan mentions that becoming a bullying victim depends on children’s upbringing, family atmosphere, which also affects children’s self-esteem.

Victoria Ohanyan, Head of UNICEF Access to Justice Program, adds that the role of teachers is most importantly to prevent violence between children.

“The problem is that children think that this is a normal phenomenon, they can ridicule to the other, and the one who is bullied believes that he has to endure,” says Victoria Ohanyan.

American-Armenian physician is in Yerevan

John Bilezikyan, an American-Armenian physician, Prof., does his best in order to visit Armenia at least twice per year.

“I visited Armenia for the first time in 2007. My parents have never been in Armenia, they settled down in the USA after the Genocide. When coming to Armenia I felt obliged to support my country.”

John Bilezikyan, Vice President of international education, Director of the bone metabolic illness program at the Columbia University College of Medicine and Surgery, is not coming to Armenia as a tourist. He conveys his experience to local specialists.

“I had two missions: to give the necessary knowledge to local doctors and bring the equipment which would help to diagnose the desease in its early stage and then prevent it. There was only one densitometer in the country. Today, eleven years later, there are ten such equipment in Armenia.”

Densitometer is an equipment that measures strength of bones. “Hologic” company has provided them.

“I applied to them and saud that I was to take densitometers to Armenia but could not pay. Every year I applied to that company, asking to give one equipment. Armenia is one of the leading countries in the world in terms of the number of these devices per person.”

It is hard for the Prof. to assess preparedness of the Armenian doctors, but he is sure about one thing.

“Eleven years ago, when we held seminaries, doctores did not ask any question, and today theere are a lot of questions, and many of the local doctors provide with consultation during the seminaries.”

“I am an academician, I teach more. My practical activity is limited but I have patients. My services are available as there is medical insurance in the US.”

In order to avoid the illness, the doctor advises using calcium-rich food, not to smoke cigarettes and use alcohol.

By the way, on May 12, John Bilezikyan was awarded the Honorary Medal of the Island. It is granted to the US citizens who have dedicated their lives to serving the public.

Anatoly Karpov critisizes Magnus Carlsen

The 12th World Chess Champion Anatoly Karpov, is deeply concerned about the future of chess. He said this during a regular interview.

“Clearly, FIDE is in deep crisis. It was expected, but no one imagined it would start so soon. Yes, Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, travels quite a lot, but he has to reconsider his attitude towards chess. It would be good if he consulted with professional chess players in order not to make wrong decisions. For example, the knockout world cup tournament. The chess lost its image and reputation. It is sad that Kirsan Ilyumzhinov does not want to understand the essence of chess, he wants to make changes in its rules,” said the famous chess player.

Anatoliy Karpov thinks that current world champion Magnus Carlsen does not care about the reputation of chess.

“World champions should think about the protection of chess traditions. However, Magnus Carlsen wants everything to suit him. As a result, he let the changes in chess rules, which is unacceptable,” concluded the former world champion.
